No other city I have visited has the same futuristic buzz as Shanghai - the much touted Hong Kong pales in comparison to the creative architechture of this city. Contrary to what Kuki 99 states the Puxi side (the side opposite Jim Mao) has some striking skyscrapers such as Tommorow square (285m/945 ft) and Plaza Square (285m/934 feet). The drive from the main airport through this Puxi side has got you leaning out the window in awe and at night it is even more impressive. 10 out of 10's only for Shanghai and New York.

Please check out this website for some snaps of the Puxi side

Defenitely one of the three or four skylines on this earth that deserves a 10. Those are fairly outdated and not exactly pretty photos (no offense neon), but I know the true splendor of Shanghai. It's second best to Hong Kong, and very impressive. China's architectural future belongs to Shanghai.

It an amazing place. Its fascinating to me that, even though the skyscraper originated in places like NY and Chicago, its places like Asia and South America that are truely basing their development on skyscrapers. The way in which skyscrapers are used in Asia is very foreign to the US. No one can accuse Shanghai of ripping off western cities because it is so different. You will never see anything like Pudong in the US. Shanghai reminds me of Sao Paulo in that the number of skyscrapers seen in the skyline is staggering.

To an extent, I think the best skyscrapers in the world belong in places with fewer skyscrapers. Some of the skyscrapers in Shanghai are wonderful, but they are lost in the crowd. If those skyscrapers were in, say, Minneapolis, they'd receive more recognition. I noticed this in NY too. Other than the really famous buildings (like the Empire State or Chrysler), the nice NY skyscrapers are overshadowed. Plus, the crowdedness doesn't let the skyscraper be seen completely. The BoA Tower in Atlanta looks monolithic because we can see the whole thing from top to bottom, even from a distance. Buildings of similar height and design would never receive as much recognition in NY.

It might sound crazy but I actually like Shanghai's skyline more than Hong Kong's. There are just so many unique looking tall buildings, some like the Oriental Pearl are just tacky but it is still a totally unique skyline and it will get better in the future.

Am still in Shanghai visiting as we speak, so I can now add my 2c...

9.5/10

What is mind-boggling about Shanghai is not just the bizzarro world of Pudong - but the extraordinary (and underrated) plethora of tall skyscrapers dispersed on *both* sides of the Huangpu River as far and wide as the eye can see....

Riding the Chengdu Expwy into the Bund is the closest thing to Coruscant you will find on this earth.. just flying past weird, wild and wonderful skyscrapers everywhere - and this is on the 'old' side - and then seeing the enourmity of Pudong rise over in the distance. The trademark haze makes everything look twice as tall again.. (Jin Mao from distance at night looks 700m)

As a traditional 'skyline' it does not match HK or NYC for layout and density, but in so many other ways as I've mentioned neither of the other 2 can touch it.. and to me I very nearly feel in my gut I would give it to Shanghai over them for simply gob-smacking awe factor..

If your a scraper fan you'll never live until you visit Shanghai..

Very nice skyline.... somehow... my opinion is that... if it goes as dense as HK or NYC, it won't be as unique, some of the weird designed buildings stands out becuase it's not that dense yet, but think of it when it's like the density now 10X or more... it'd be pretty messed up "in my opinion".

but i would say i'd give it a 10 in the future like alot of other people.

I've lived in Shanghai so i know what the buildings REALLY look like - apart from what's in Pudong near the Huangpu River, there's nothing else really. If you look, you'll notice that it's always the same old buildings.

Unlike NYC and HKC - you can go at it from any angle - from the harbours - from the mountains - and you will always get something spectacular.

I've heard that some Chinese saw the giant circle at the top of the SWFC as suggestive of the Japanese flag (and hence were offended by it), thus suggesting the Mori Group (from Japan) had some kind of neo-imperialist message to send.

This skyline will be alot better with the new SWFC but it's still not full enough. It's missing something, it's too airy in a way. It needs to be more like New York before it can recieve a 10, it's already in a similar geographical setting, but it needs to be more full and dense.

9/10, 9.5/10 in five years, 10/10 in fifteen years

its a shame so many people voted 3 or less.

Shanghai has some of the worst architecture I have ever seen, and the skyline isn't organized at all. It has no shape or form, and skyscrapers seem to sprout up randomly. Shanghai does have height though, and a few good towers, so I'll rate it 5/10

Yes, the skyline has no peak, because it's skyscrapers anywhere, it's 365 degree skyline.

Here's shots from different parts of skyline from Jinmao (the tall building). Notice the tall buildings not covered by smog on the horizon on the Puxi side of the photo - those had to be >15km away. If you treat Jin Mao as the center of the city, the CBD extends 10-15km 365 degrees.

I dunno if there's another city in the world with that kind of skyline.

A city of over 16 millions people, I believe in the very near future. Shanghai will be emerged as the most important and most powerful, in terms of economic, city in the world.

With it having less emphasis than Hong Kong has, this city remains number one for it's best work on design. With that being said, this city is beautiful. What makes this city so unique is how they managed to design futuristic buildings added with a bunch of western designed buildings along the coastline of Shanghai. There is not a lot of skyscrapers being involved, but enough for a satisfy. With a lot of room for more improvements on developing the number of buildings available. But the skyline is very sophisticated. 9/10
