I'd imagine that the water off the beaches near Vancouver and Toronto are cold.

Anyone know what the water's like in the beaches of Lake Erie and the Okanagan?

The ocean temps of Southern BC are relatively the same as Southern California. I go swimming in the Georgia Strait & English Bay during the summer, and you can find warm pockets that are really nice. This time of year though its way too cold.

My favourite beaches in Canada are Parlee Beach in Shediac, NB, Cavendish Beach in P.E.I. , English Bay & Wreck in Vancouver, and Long Beach in Tofino BC.

Some pics.

Vancouver island has some nice beaches. Rathtrevor near parksville is famous for its low tides going out about 1 kilometer.
Parksville is also home to the Sandcastle competition www.parksvillebeachfest.ca

The Juan de fuca trail and the west coast trail have some nice beaches. Here are three pictures of Long Beach near Tofino

Crescent Beach in NS looks amazing! How popular is surfing out there? We have a Crescent Beach in Vancouver too...but not nearly as nice IMO. It's kinda cool when the tide goes out because you can walk really far out on sand flats, and there are a few palms growing but i'd say its one of the lower quality beaches around SoBC

Some beaches in Vancouver can be fairly warm since many of them are sheltered and shallow, most are warmer then San Francisco area beaches which are directly exposed to the Pacific. Of cource the lakes in the Okanogan are quite warm.

Surfing is probably about the same in popularity here as in B.C. A few really popular spots, but for the most part places are relatively empty. Most of the best places for surfing aren't even real beaches, more like rocky points and places you wouldn't really want to put out a towel and relax at lol.

There is a beach on Pancake Bay, on lake superior, it's the longest white send beach on lake superior, about 1 1/2 miles long, or so. In the winter, it's a freezing hell. But during a summer heat wave, it's almost as good as beached in the rest of Canada! For a beach in Northern Ontario, though..

That's why I asked the question, since Lake Okanagan and Lake Erie are small and shallow compared to Lake Ontario / Strait of Georgia, they'd be warmer.

But how warm is "warm"? Is it over 20 degrees?

English Bay's water temperature averages 6 degrees celcius in January, with some years being as high as 10.

During the summer it is anywhere from 16-22 degrees C. If you go down to White Rock or Tsawwassen the water temps can be as high as 28C.

So it looks like the ocean surrounding Vancouver is warmer than the warmest of the great lakes any time of the year.

The North shore of Lake Superior is one of the most beautiful drives one can do, and the beaches are amazing to walk along. For those who think that a lake is calm, just walk along its shores. Superior is so big and deep, it acts like a inland sea.

i do personally get a hard-on thinking of anexing those islands and i dont see what problems it would cost, i mean they only have about 20,000 people, how hard would that be to integrate into canadian society, yes i know we would have to spend allot to bring them to our standard of living but in the end it would be worth it and wouldnt effect the average canadian that much at all, even if it did raise my tax dollars by up to $10 which would be allot of extra money X it by 32,500,000, i still wouldnt care cause to me it would be worth it.

People who oppose the annexation of the T&C do so on the grounds that it is unquestionably a one way street. Think about it for a second : What do we actually get out of this deal as Canadians ? Absolutely nothing. We get to pay to bring a couple of islands up to our standard of living. We get nothing else. Think we'll all get free trips to the T&C islands or something ? Guess again. Think it will provide an incentive for Canadian investment there ? Why would it? It would cost us more in the event of annexation to invest there than it does now. It may only be 20,000 people or so but MRI's aren't costed out on how many people they'll serve.
Some people say "Bah, think about all the people we'll be helping by bringing up their standard of living" Okay, so then why don't we annex sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia while we're at it then ? No, if we're going to help them there are plenty of other ways to do it that won't require us to pay indefinitely through our taxes. It's not selfish, it's common sense. We give, they receive. If some Canuck wants to build a resort there now, nobody is standing in his or her way. They don't need our taxes to do it.

JARdan
May 4th, 2005, 07:06 AM
They should work out the same deal that the U.S does. For instance, the U.S Virgin Islands. Let them be independent, but still "Canadian" territory.

LooselogInThePeg
May 4th, 2005, 07:09 AM
^Well, sure but think about that for a second as well : The way it's set up in your case , it's pretty obvious that the US is the big winner there. What does the US give to the Virgin Islands ? Whatever it is, it's gotta be a pittance compared to what they'd get if they were a state (assuming they get anything worth mentioning at all) The US on the other hand, gets a base for it's military. Canada doesn't have much use for it's own version of the Virgin Islands.

The T&C has a myriad of problems, one of the most serious is the in flood of Haitian refugees the place gets. If the T&C were to join with Canada, it would only become a much bigger magnet for refugees - and they would want to come here.
