i got back from my second las vegas trip last wednesday. here are some pictures. for pictures from my plane ride back, you can see my thread about identifying the western united states.

we stayed at the sahara again, and this was the view from our room. we had a perfect view of the stratosphere and of downtown.

i was in there on my first trip. it's a lot of tourist stuff. there's a store in between downtown and the strip (on main street i believe). they sell real gifts: casino stuff like playing cards, roulette wheels, old casino chips, even slot machines.

here are some more pictures.

the strasophere again.

downtown again (what surprised me is that the big office towers are pread out across the town; there's one by palace station, and the wells fargo building is on howard hughes parkway).

the view from the tunis tower at the sahara. this was the first time i got a good view of the mountains to the west of the city.

If you could have stayed one more day until Thursday 4/28, you would have been able to see the grand opening of the newest mega resort, Wynn Las vegas.

yeah, we were actually in vegas the day it opened (they were having a private party at 10 pm on the 27th, two hours before the 12 am april 28 opening), but we were on a plane to houston by 1130 am. i do have some picture of the wynn as we went past it on the monorail, so technically i have pictures of it on opening day. unfortunately, when i saw the wynn last year, i didn't take a picture of it, while the window panes were still being put up. it would've been nice to have a picture of it while under construction.

anyway, i'm bumping my own thread with a few more pictures. i'll have even more pictures later.

Give me a real city any day. Vegas is fascinating for its excesses, but it doesn't really deliver what any decent city does routinely. First off, real cities have real functions, and those functions in themselves are both wonderful and interesting. The urban core of Las Vegas is dismal, and the Strip is like a bad acid trip. Yeah, if you're into pennysaver-style escort ads passed out on the street, gluttonous levels of amusement products at prodigal prices, and architecture at war with the canons of good taste, Vegas is for you. If you love real cities, even Salt Lake is much more satisfying.
