Portnet Tower set to change Durban's skyline.

Standing 67m tall, the Portnet Millennium Tower being built on the Bluff overlooking the port entrance, represents a paradigm shift. It will not only serve as a functional port building, but will also communicate visually the fluctuations of wind and tide to the people of Durban.

On the roof of the tower is a mesh-clad cowl element which will act as a giant wind vane, revolving in response to the wind direction. A fixed spire in the center has a tidal position. A series of chasing strobe lights will indicate the tidal direction - incoming or outgoing.

The tower's top floor will accommodate an open plan operations center, with uninterrupted 360 degree views, which will house the vessel tracking system and control ship traffic at the harbour entrance. The floor below will have a search and rescue room to co-ordinate maritime rescue operations off the eastern coast.

900 cubic metres of concrete, all manufactured with NPC CEMENT has been used in the construction of this stunning new addition to Durban's skyline.

NPC Cement from NPC meet the international SABS EN-197 specifications. It is made in KwaZulu Natal, using KZN raw materials, and formulated to meet KZN's demanding climatic conditions.

Very functional. I'm just not so sure about its attractiveness, especially at daytime. Its about time that Durban is becoming of age. The city is silently becoming more and more competitive and finding its feet as a world city with its massively new marine park, passenger cruise liner terminal, convention centre, and new international airport to be built soon. I've also read that the city plans to built blocks of new highrise hotels along a renewed, landscaped beachfront.
Can the Durban forumers please show off their city with pics??
