Roppongi Tower
Tokyo, Japan

HEIGHT: 238m/781 feet
FLOORS: 54 floors
COMPLETION: 2003
ARCHITECT: Kohn Pederson Fox

Roppongi Tower is a building of monumental scale and the centrepiece of a 27-acre development located in an area of Tokyo with no organised street grid. For this reason, the tower was conceived without any preferred vantage point or ‘view’ and planned as an object, intended to be seen from an infinite number of locations.

Using compositional techniques derived from cubist paintings, a constantly shifting impression of its volume and surface is created. Forms observed in Japan, including the folded paper of origami and samurai armour, influenced the articulation of the building’s top and base.

The crown of this multi-storey building accommodates a state of the art Museum, the Mori Art Centre. This museum and its related facilities occupy the top five floors. The top level of the Art Centre will feature four elongated galleries that can accommodate large-scale works. The level below will feature both interior and panoramic galleries with outdoor terraces that afford views of the city from all directions. The three floors directly beneath the galleries will house a conference hall, an education centre and other related museum facilities.

I love it! It is sooo huge and looks like a robot. Its footprint must possibly occupy a few streets! This building shows that fat can be beautiful. It beats the living daylights out of the ungainly Landmark Tower:bash:

Tokyo loves building fat skyscrapers. This one has more than 4 million sf (380 000 m˛) in such a low amount of floors, compared with something like the Sears Tower which has twice as many floors but approximately the same amount of office space! It looks great though. I like this tower a lot 8.5/10

an interesting building indeed...a lot of experimenting with the exterior design....the facade looks incredible in Dmac's last pic...at least KFP doesn't cookie cutter it's designs all over...8.5/10 for originality!

Big, bold, tall......and KPF doing contemporary Japanese style, which i love.

Subtle but effective changes in its mid-section. Too "aluminiumish" in its colouring tough. Imagine it as a deep emerald green.

I bet it's a"blast" inside!!

6.5/10 - the tower is nice - the curved sections of facade flow together well, even if it IS a bit chunky - it just needs a few set backs, and maybe a bit more contrast between the sections.

The roof, though, is another story - or rather, "What roof?!!" - it looks like the contractors just decided to stop building, walked off, and forgot to take their equipment with them - bad job!

Emerald green...hmmm...that I like, museumb :D

It seems like an absolutely hulking mass, which I don't really go for myself.

Very Japanese, relatively simple design but wonderful detailing on the facade, reeks of quality and thoughtful design. A building that huge could have looked very overbearing but this tower fits perfectly on the Tokyo skyline. Looks like it was designed by Sony :-)

There was a show on TV this week (Discovery Channel USA) about this building and project. Apparantly it was a big gamble looking into a future vision for Tokyo. They replaced 500 homes in the lowrise, traditional district with this project. Promising each homeowner a new, bigger, better apartment when finished. They razed the district and put up a completely self-supportive community. Those displaced then moved back in.

According to the show the Roppongi project is supposed to be an experimental vision for Tokyo's future. Fitting everything anyone could possibly need onto one small site with comprehensive transport links and thus allowing some very needed "open space" into a very crowded city. This explains the "fatness" of the main tower.

Apparantly the developers and architects are looking towards building more of these self-supported communities. On the show they described a 3000' foot version based on the same idea and discussed earthquake strength, cost and construction viability. Very interesting.

Kudos to the Japanese for thinking so forward to Tokyo's needs. :D

After having seen the details and vision behind this project I have to change my vote to 10/10!

on April 26, Roppongi Hills Tower celebrated its opening.
According to newspaper of that day, construction cost is 2.2 billion US dollars (a tower only) and 3.9 billion (whole complex)and the floor space of the tower is large enough to park a B747 on the top of it !!!!!!

I love this so much, however, many Tokyoites dislike it because Japanese are fond of boxy buildings.

Too fat but still its really nice. I also usually like buildings that narrow more at the top, especially when they're this fat.

A Tokyo classic. Like most buildings, one has to actually have been to this building to thruly apreciate it. Well, I'm of those :)

I love most everything about it. The metro-entrance is so futuristic, whit that escalator surrounded by huge screens while you view the tower right in front of you. Then you have the plaza with a great landscaping, with great views towards Tokyo Tower. Here you can find a huge spider sculpture that adds a lot of uniqueness to it.

In addition, there is the fancy shopping-mall in the podium, with cinemas, bars, restaurants and the Hyatt. Also the observation deck is magnificent.

I love to look at buildings, but I love more being able to actually interact with them and Roppongi Tower (Mori Tower?) offers a lot to the general public.
