View Full Version : VANCOUVER - Rogers Arena (17,333)
Jaybird May 3rd, 2005, 01:55 AM General Motors Place, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
This arena, built in 1995, is home to the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. It seats 20,000+. It also has a nice setting, too, along the waterfront, I guess it looks like according to the first picture there.

Jaybird May 3rd, 2005, 01:56 AM It looks awesome! Right downtown and on the waterfront! 9/10.
Jaybird May 3rd, 2005, 01:57 AM BTW, it's also the place where U2 have set up for their future concerts and practises and stuff for their upcoming massive world tour!
PHXbevo May 3rd, 2005, 04:08 AM pity post ... do you often talk to yourself. ;)
i give it a 2/10.
reasons:
1. who cares if its by the water if its an arena
2. what in the world are those luxury boxes doing up there. what are those .. tree houses?
3. the outside looks like an artists rendering on an old macintosh
4. The ceiling looks too high to keep noise in and make it an intimidating place
5. hockey -- outside of olympic hockey -- sucks
waccamatt May 3rd, 2005, 04:51 AM Ignore the grouch, Jaybird. 9/10. Nice location, nice arena, beautiful city.

Those are where the commentators are and NHL officials are. Do you not see the suites at the midway point which separates the lower and upper sections?
I give you a 2/10.

...ooooooo...
i guess you didnt want an honest ranking. In that case, 10/10. OMG LOL, the arena r0x0rz !!!!!!!!!!1111111one!!1! :|
npinguy May 3rd, 2005, 05:40 AM 1. who cares if its by the water if its an arena
right, because of course we don't care about a city's natural setting or skyline. We don't give a crap about what anything looks like on this forum, yes?
2. what in the world are those luxury boxes doing up there. what are those .. tree houses?
those are strictly for the media and the NHL officials
3. the outside looks like an artists rendering on an old macintosh
only fair criticism
4. The ceiling looks too high to keep noise in and make it an intimidating place
GM Place is one of the loudest hockey arenas in the NHL
5. hockey -- outside of olympic hockey -- sucks
aaaaaaaaaand you're an idiot :bash:
Zaqattaq May 3rd, 2005, 06:07 AM Very grey, but still a pretty smart looking place
DrJoe May 3rd, 2005, 06:41 AM 2. what in the world are those luxury boxes doing up there. what are those .. tree houses?
lol, pretty much every arena in North America has a similar setup to that. As others have said, they are not luxury boxes they are for NHL and team officials, etc.

Ugh.
1.) Who cares? The city does. And why would be on a forum like this if you didn't care about a city's appearance.
2.)Most arena's have those.
3.)At least this is a valid remark. Even though I disagree with it.
4.)Like it was said before, GM Place is an extremly loud building. One of the loudest arena's in the league
5.)
a.)This is a thread about the arena, not the sport played in it.
b.)If you think the Olympics is the only place to find exciting hockey, you need to look harder
c.)Hockey is the best sport there is!
Nutterbug May 6th, 2005, 04:30 AM Canucks fan, but not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing sports arena.
I gave it a 7.5.

I would agree though that the wide ice game is better. And you don't get the same talent concentration spread out over 30 NHL teams.
Urban Dave May 6th, 2005, 10:40 AM Not a very special design. I suppose it looks like many other stadiums, specially in Canada and USA.
CF May 7th, 2005, 01:43 AM I would agree though that the wide ice game is better. And you don't get the same talent concentration spread out over 30 NHL teams.
I never said I disagreed. But if that's the only exciting hockey he can find, he's not looking hard enough.
PHXbevo May 7th, 2005, 03:35 AM actually i'm looking hard, and i cant seem to find any NHL highlights on my SportsCenter ... :)
face it, the world hasnt missed hockey this year.

Oh really? Maybe where you live. Don't be so arrogant, tons of people miss hockey right now.

Well, it's not like you've ever stood on a pair of skates there in Arizona, is it?
PHXbevo May 7th, 2005, 04:04 AM we have a pro team here. maybe you've heard of them. they did move here from the hockey mecca of canada :|
and yes, <1% of the population misses hockey
0% in phoenix, with the suns and dbacks kicking ass right now.

rt_0891 May 7th, 2005, 06:02 AM Why the hell would the NHL locate a team in Pheonix? Makes no business sense. Just get rid of the team. Expanding into Pheonix was a stupid waste of capital.
PHXbevo May 7th, 2005, 06:03 AM Hockey may not be missed in the dessert you call home
Oh. Look at me! I'm the Magical Man from Happy-Land, who lives in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Lane!

okay. meanwhile, can P-H-O-E-N-I-X keep its team?
rt_0891 May 7th, 2005, 06:10 AM okay. meanwhile, can P-H-O-E-N-I-X keep its team?
Typo, oops. Quebec City deserves a second chance, the Coyotes would be perfect there.
PHXbevo May 7th, 2005, 06:11 AM yes, they should go ahead and fold the coyotes midseason, whenever that may be
*crickets chirping*
BTW, wayne gretzky himself manages the PHX coyotes. Go tell him that its a "stupid waste of capital" ... whatever that means.
You are right about one thing, though. The NHL is a money pit. It wouldnt be unthinkable to contract the league to 16 or so teams. 30 is way too many and not that many people care enough to go to multiple games a season.
rt_0891 May 7th, 2005, 06:22 AM BTW, wayne gretzky himself manages the PHX coyotes. Go tell him that its a "stupid waste of capital" ... whatever that means.
His advisors are idiots. They should all be fired for misinforming him on Phoenix's hockey investment potential.

Exactly. And the Coyotes should be among the first on the chopping block.
PHXbevo May 7th, 2005, 06:27 AM agreed.
but ... is the NHL even gonna come back from its slumber?
something about a tree in a forest falling down.
Nutterbug May 7th, 2005, 06:40 AM Why the hell would the NHL locate a team in Pheonix? Makes no business sense. Just get rid of the team. Expanding into Pheonix was a stupid waste of capital.
Ask that idiot Bettman.
People like him are the ones responsible for the current labour mess that the NHL is in right now.
Nutterbug May 7th, 2005, 06:42 AM Typo, oops. Quebec City deserves a second chance, the Coyotes would be perfect there.
The Coyotes should go back to Winnipeg. Quebec should get the AVS back.
Well, maybe not if the Coloradans actually love and support their Avs, but in which case, they should get any of the many other sun belt teams that nobody cares for.
rt_0891 May 7th, 2005, 06:42 AM something about a tree in a forest falling down.
In Canada, that tree will come down like thunder lol.
Wait a couple more years, and if the NHL is still in limbo, expect mass riots in all our igloo hamlets in the North. ;)
CF May 8th, 2005, 02:37 AM PHXbevo, Phoenix has a team because Bettman is an idiot. He is also the reason why there are 30 teams, why hockey isn't a healthy sport in the US, and why there isn't any NHL hockey to talk about in the first place.
I don't know if you can remember, but in the early 80's, the NHL actually got better TV ratings than basketball. Then, Bettman came along...
samsonyuen May 8th, 2005, 02:59 PM The outside isn't great. I don't like the single color (gray!) scheme. The inside's nice.
isaidso April 12th, 2007, 04:47 PM So much in Vancouver is glass and shiny. The grey is a nice soothing contrast to this and the dominating natural surroundings. The building, I suppose, might add to the grey dreariness of the wet season in Vancouver, but grey is still elegant and helps this building blend in.
nyrmetros April 12th, 2007, 08:17 PM The Coyotes should go back to Winnipeg. Quebec should get the AVS back.

Both Winnipeg and Quebec City deserve teams, as does Hartford. Denver Avs have been a success, and the people actually care about the team.
cinosanap April 13th, 2007, 09:51 PM What's with all the cry babies getting all oany over one guys comments?
Get a life.
I'd give it an 8. The inside is pretty nice but I don't particuliarly think the outside is attractive at all.
Jim856796 July 1st, 2009, 09:21 PM The General Motors Place is the primary ice hockey venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The arena will be renamed to Canada Hockey Place during the Games due to rules against corporate sponsorship of Olympic venues. Instead of international-sized ice, NHL-sized ice will be used for the first time in the Olympics. It is unknown whether the other ice hockey venue, the University of British Columbia Winter Sports Centre, will use international-size ice or NHL-size ice. Pacific Coliseum, the venue for figure skating and short-track speed skating.
One question: Is the international sized ice surface used for ice hockey the same size as the ice surface used for figure skating?
nyrmetros July 2nd, 2009, 06:37 PM I really wish they were able to retrofit the Place with IIHF ice. I always look foward to watching the games on IIHF ice.

I'm pretty sure it is since the venue that will host figure skating in 2010 had to modified to host the event. The venue had NHL sized ice before the reno's, and was the former home of the NHL's Canucks before the move to GM Place
Lord David July 4th, 2009, 12:53 PM I really wish they were able to retrofit the Place with IIHF ice. I always look foward to watching the games on IIHF ice.
It's not that they were not able to, it's that they chose not to. Not only to save on costs involved, but to have the added attendance figures in Ice Hockey games during the Olympics.
