sanhen May 3rd, 2005, 09:14 AM This building will become part of Kemayoran Cyber City. Which is one of Jakarta new CBDs. Afaik, currently they still building the base foundation, which cost Rp. 60 billion (~US$6 million).
Chad May 3rd, 2005, 09:20 AM It's very good to have the tallest tower in the region, and I'm very glad too.
But for a sec I thought, Is this really a need for Jakarta and Indonesia?, Very big capital of investment. Instead of building this, I think the government should be cleary focussing on improving life qualities of people who live in remote areas, rural Islands or even in the big cities it's self.
Just my opinion though, nothing serious.
Greg May 3rd, 2005, 09:22 AM Wow, great news! I always loved the rendering of this tower and I'm happy that it's going to be built. :)
Alvin May 3rd, 2005, 09:23 AM Chad, this project is fully funded by the private sector...so it doens't affect the government's budget for everything else. Besides, the construction of this tower will employ thousands of workers over a period of 5 years.

Chad, fully agree, but isn't it similar in Bangkok or Manila. :dunno:

Thats very great!!!, besides...nah Greg, Bangkokdoesnt has this kind of plan at the moment.
mtb_nz May 3rd, 2005, 10:03 AM what an awesome looking building... will look even better when its all lit up at night
Qatar4Ever May 3rd, 2005, 11:21 AM not bad. nice.
gurukool May 3rd, 2005, 11:32 AM jak has another lighted ss that looks great
sdtj May 3rd, 2005, 11:36 AM More photos/renders please. Looks very interesting.
gurukool May 3rd, 2005, 11:37 AM there is always a thin line between spending and using CHAD
empersouf May 3rd, 2005, 11:41 AM Nice job, and they are already constructing. Keep up the good work.
Yamauchi May 3rd, 2005, 07:34 PM Nice tower. ;)
Filip May 3rd, 2005, 08:02 PM Hahaha, we Canadians should stick a few hockey sticks on top of the CN tower and make it taller.:D
Bikes May 3rd, 2005, 08:26 PM Great!
mumbojumbo May 4th, 2005, 03:47 AM Looks pretty nice.
Skybean May 4th, 2005, 03:54 AM If this thing really tops out there will be a spire battle between this tower and the CN.
sdtj May 4th, 2005, 04:00 AM Well, the CN tower couldn't be the tallest forever. Now we need a new taller for NA
Oriolus May 4th, 2005, 04:26 AM CN Tower is 553.3m isn't it so it wont take to many hockey sticks at all for them to beat 558m & claim back the title of worlds tallest tower :)
When completed Jakarta Tower will also be the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere, eclipsing the Omega Base Mast at Gippsland (Victoria, Australia) at 427m.
sdtj May 4th, 2005, 04:28 AM ^
I have never heard of such a tower in AU
Travis007 May 4th, 2005, 05:01 AM WOW! Hockey sticks on top of CN Tower's spire to reclaim the title, now that would be a truly Canadian tower! :D
It looks like a pretty cool tower, but I must admit that it looks a lot like a syringe.
Oriolus May 4th, 2005, 05:06 AM Omega Base Mast is a guyed mast and is Australia's & the southern hemisphere's tallest structure at 427m. It was built in 1982 and was the last of 8 Omega stations established around the world by the US government. It hasn't been in use since 1997 when the Omega network was shut down.
Here's a thread for more info. There are plenty of conpiracy theories about it :)

ksunarjo May 4th, 2005, 05:25 AM bad design. too bad they don't use the old one. hope they change their mind.
Oriolus May 4th, 2005, 05:48 AM old design? Got any pics of it ksunarjo?
some_stupid_nut May 4th, 2005, 07:22 AM Yeah I wasnt aware of another design.
Looks nice, hope its earthquake proof!
They also got a huge volcano in that area!
sdtj May 4th, 2005, 08:21 AM Thank you Oriolus, but still I wouldn't count that mast. Would be great to get a photo thought.
:)
Oriolus May 4th, 2005, 08:28 AM I'm not counting the Omega Mast as a tower - its just a mast. Omega Base Mast is the tallest STRUCTURE in the southern hemisphere. Jakarta Tower will overtake Omega to become the tallest STRUCTURE in the Southern Hemisphere and overtake CN Tower to become the tallest TOWER in the world.
sdtj May 4th, 2005, 08:47 AM I understand your point, but still I wouln't even bring up that mast.
:colgate:
satit28 May 4th, 2005, 10:09 AM the design looks a bit dated back.....
LeCom May 5th, 2005, 01:15 AM Great tower, original and unique, not another hamburger spire ripoff, and this one is also almost like a skyscraper. Great one anyway.
Filip May 5th, 2005, 01:36 AM WOW! Hockey sticks on top of CN Tower's spire to reclaim the title, now that would be a truly Canadian tower! :D
It looks like a pretty cool tower, but I must admit that it looks a lot like a syringe.
Yup, I agree with every point.:D
But it really won't be hard to overtake that title for the Cn tower again.;)

I believe this is the winning design that was supposed to be the Jakarta Tower, by Jahn. Unfortunately it was always going to be too expensive/ financially not feasible and so they opted to build its present design instead.
satit28 May 5th, 2005, 09:50 AM i like this design better.........
sdtj May 5th, 2005, 09:51 AM I can't really tell from that picture how the old desing looks really...
:|
deep sea buildings May 5th, 2005, 03:15 PM after this tower is built i wouldn't be surprised if the CN tower increases it's height. afterall, didn't the designers say that the CN towers height could be increased if it's 'world tallest title' was taken? it may go over 600m!! and the CN tower has a public observation floor 50m's higher than the jakarta tower's highest floor.
i will watch the jakarta tower construction and this IS good news for the southern hemisphere. i just prefer and admire the CN tower more.
rud May 5th, 2005, 03:50 PM kool..thats fukin off the hook..wot a wicked design
it reminds me off a mass off version of the Dubai Airport A.T.C tower
and in fact if I could eat it I would put it in a sandwich :eat:
Xephiroth May 5th, 2005, 05:12 PM Oh ! Excellent it would taller than KL tower is Malaysia.
D_Y2k.2^ May 5th, 2005, 08:01 PM just wondering,is this tower located in the city?
Bahraini Spirit May 5th, 2005, 08:27 PM Well with the CN tower's mast havin the advantage of reachin 2000 ft if am not wrong, will be interesting to see what happens when this is completed.
RafflesCity May 5th, 2005, 08:37 PM This project will have a huge potential to put Jakarta on the world map and improve tourism
Alvin May 6th, 2005, 01:31 AM just wondering,is this tower located in the city?
no, its not located in the current main CBD area but this area is being developed as the next CBD, telecommunications and tourism center. There are also plans to build south east asia's largest auto mall (cars etc). The site used to be an airport and so its got world-class infrastructure such as fibre-optics, high capacity electricity/water pumps, broadband etc.
cello1974 May 8th, 2005, 12:57 AM Wow! Taller than CN Tower. And I always thought it was impossible. Nice to hear (to read, he he)...
ncon May 8th, 2005, 01:05 PM This project will have a huge potential to put Jakarta on the world map and improve tourism

taller than KL tower :eek2:
satit28 May 22nd, 2005, 02:02 PM CN tower is the most elegant.............
Avatar May 22nd, 2005, 05:33 PM CN Tower is 553.3m isn't it so it wont take to many hockey sticks at all for them to beat 558m & claim back the title of worlds tallest tower :)
When completed Jakarta Tower will also be the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere, eclipsing the Omega Base Mast at Gippsland (Victoria, Australia) at 427m.
It will also be the ugliest in the Southern Hemisphere. Why oh why didn't they come up with a better design - that expensive proposal that was rejected was so much better. This tower would have to be one of the world's most repulsive. Such a disparity of shapes and styles - no cohesion in any of the design.
Zorobabel May 22nd, 2005, 06:17 PM I personally like it. Certainly not as ugly and dull as KL Tower, and it seems more attractive to me than the Pearl Orient Tower. The latter, however, has always been a atrocious and horrid design in my eyes.
ncon May 22nd, 2005, 06:29 PM i like it but i think pearl tower is nicer
yeah i think some design is lacking on the tower but still i like it
Ace May 22nd, 2005, 07:55 PM Very proud to see this Beauty rise in my Home Town.
When It 'll be finished. I'll sure gonna visit Jakarta.
Genç May 22nd, 2005, 08:12 PM Fabulous tower! But perhaps, it's design too complicated in comparison to similar towers...

i thought that the CN-tower higher was, because this tower is 558 metres and the CN-tower is 720 metres
or is the jakarta-tower higher because an high spire or something?
nezzybaby May 22nd, 2005, 09:06 PM ^720m i think is a made up value.. no building has ever come close to this figure (burj dubai will) the tallest thing ever erected on this planet was a communications mast at 650m and that fell down.
CN tower is just over 553m to the very tip of its spire/antenna. the heighest viewing bit is at 446m, but the main observation area only at 346m.
in summary jakarta tower will be bigger for the simple reason that you made up the height for CN tower :)
Obelixx May 23rd, 2005, 01:56 AM It will not be the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, if Solar Chimney at Mildura will be built!
Otherwise, why did they not built a tower with a longer spire in Jakarta? This tower will not be taller than Ostankino-Tower in Moscow, which is since 2003 579 metres high!
I would have built a tower in design similiar to Gerbrandy Tower, only larger: e.g. a 400 metre high concrete tower with a 600 metre high guyed mast on the top!
cello1974 May 23rd, 2005, 02:47 AM This project will have a huge potential to put Jakarta on the world map and improve tourism
??? Indonesia is full of great tourist attractions!!! Who will go to a city just see one single tower???
Indica May 23rd, 2005, 03:16 AM it looks to me though that the space deck (i think thats what its called) is higher than the obs area on the Jakarta tower.. correct me if Im wrong. but the height it has over the CN is to the tip of the antenna.
Burj Dubai will be by far the tallest, but Im a little disappointed with the Burj even after hearing that the public obs deck is only at 124th floor. With that said, will the public obs deck on the burj dubai be any higher than this jakarta tower, or even the cn towers upper deck?? Only time will tell, but this will be very interesting to see!!
As for this Jakarta tower, I think this is one of the best looking ones Ive seen to date.. I think the CN is the shit (though a little outdated), but this new one looks soo crazy good, and futuristic!! also the fact that it looks like there is actually a building in the base of it too, thats awesome.. This one, and the Torre tower that is being done in Mexico will be my favorites.. Ill really be able to judge though when I visit them; one of these days Ill make it over to Canada, Im just afraid that Ill end up wanting to stay there for good based on the things I hear about that place from my friends!!
New York Yankee May 23rd, 2005, 09:59 AM ??? Indonesia is full of great tourist attractions!!! Who will go to a city just see one single tower???
as it is the WTB, look at dubai.they expect that in the follow years many people come to dubai to see the burj dubai (in the years after in finished).
think about the good years of the twin towers
Avatar May 23rd, 2005, 12:57 PM I congratulate the Indonesians on this mighty building, it's great to see them powering ahead with such a large and grand project - I am bitterly disappointed in the final design they have chosen however.
I am gobsmacked that so many of you like it. It is an example of something that could be done so much better with the level of excellence found in some of our artists, engineers, architects and designers today.
It breaks almost every principle of good design. It it simply a hotpotch of differeing styles and shapes, none of which work in harmony to create an enduring and cohesive form. I have said it in earlier threads - this design (created by the guy that did OPT?), has simply borrowed key elements of his earlier design and lumped them together with this newer design. Where OPT was a success, this one is however a failure. OPT has a flow and a extremely high-tech design slant with a very powerful allusion to technology through the "atomic structure look", with good used of this symbolic shape and style, although contrived, it still works exceptionally well - mostly due to its extraneous and shocking style. This new one is not shocking, just plain strange looking - it reminds me of a 5 year old stacking toilet and glad wrap rolls together to form a tower.
The design is far too fussy, combines far too many differing elements and does so in a manner that suggest a 'tacked-on' design appearance. The observation pod looks as though it was an afterthought and the design would have looked better without it. The design is also too evocative of a person standing which adds to the extreme tackiness. It's far from futuristic and more likely to date that most towers, it will date even worse than the space needle has.
Those who slag on Menara Tower as boring and ugly might want to take a closer looks at the detailing and interiors, where islamic design and principles have been carefully considered.
BTW this is not a dig at our friends in Jakarta, but rather an expression of my disappointment that something better did not eventuate.
Alvin May 23rd, 2005, 04:40 PM a bit old fashioned, yes. tacky, maybe. but ugly....not really, comparing it to Shanghai OPT! Never was a big fan of that one. But I have to say the CN Tower arguably has a very timeless design.
I think this tower will look a lot nicer once completed and seen in real life, rather than renderings. it'll be a nice new landmark for the sprawling city.
Cliff May 23rd, 2005, 04:57 PM So what is the status of this building?
ncon May 23rd, 2005, 05:02 PM it will function as hotel , observation deck , tv/phone tower , discovery/science center , shopping mall
Alvin May 23rd, 2005, 05:06 PM So what is the status of this building?
its under construction, should be ready by 2009.
Candy May 23rd, 2005, 06:06 PM It could really be very high, but I still think that CN Tower has a better design and is more elegant... This one has a great height, but is nearly "ugly" to look it... CN is still better...
Obelixx May 23rd, 2005, 06:36 PM On http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=202036 you can find more data about the tallest construction, built so far.

totally agree........
CN is more......
elegant.......
and prettier.........
JKT Tower just wanna be the tallest........
but not "THE" Architectural Icon of asia...............
but as an asian.............
it's great enough to have a super tall tower in our region..........
aku June 6th, 2005, 07:06 AM cool dude ...
CULWULLA June 6th, 2005, 08:01 AM its under construction, should be ready by 2009.

this is proposed section.
Bingz June 14th, 2005, 01:29 AM more news please... i've checked the official website a couple times but the website is not on... what's going on??? Is it on Hold again??? Somebody please tell me what's going on????
Alvin June 14th, 2005, 01:37 AM Yep, the website is down , unfortunately. BUt it doesn't mean that the project is on-hold...one Indo forumer is currently in Jakarta (Encon) and we've specifically requested that he take pics of the construction site as we are all dying to know how it's going !
(btw the reason why you don't see many pictures is becos the tower's not actually located in the Main CBD)
Alvin June 14th, 2005, 01:42 AM if its undeerconstruction, shouldnt be in construction threads?

Jakarta Tower can withstand earthquake @ which richter scale?
musang June 18th, 2005, 11:05 AM Chad, this project is fully funded by the private sector...
Alvin, the private sctor being whom in particular?
Sonic from Padova June 18th, 2005, 11:47 AM nice tower!
Alvin June 18th, 2005, 12:15 PM Alvin, the private sctor being whom in particular?
Before the economic crisis of 1998, this project was going to be funded by Indonesia's most well known tycoons and supported by the central government. Now, it is being funded by a consortium of local (but smaller-scale) businessmen, apparently associated with a church (believe it or not).
627 June 18th, 2005, 10:34 PM yeah alot of it is being funded by the bethany church, which was my mom's old church when we lived in singapore.. they're pretty crazy... i remeber having our sunday services in singapore's grandhyatt hotel every sunday where they would pretty much book all the grandballroooms and meetingrooms that were available... I would imagine that being at least 50grand each sunday? probably more.. n all the christmas parties and stuff would be held at the ritzcarlton's grandballroom.. pretty cool for a church
soo with that in mind... the world's tallest tower... sure why not?
ncon June 20th, 2005, 05:26 PM ok i got he jakarta tower pics already
latest:
still see no cranes and no developments at all only see some car dig the soil maybe for foundation

LOL haha TRUE...
This would probably be the case:
:tiasd:
Indonesians would laugh at the Canadians haha.. :jk:
beyond 1000 July 13th, 2005, 06:07 AM I've no doubt that owners of CN would increase the height to stay above this tower. When the Ostankino Tower caught fire and renovations were in place, the Russians there stated that they may beat CN to over 560m. CN officials stated that they will not relinquish that title since building higher would mean better tv reception and more money for the Greater Toronto Area.
The CN Tower was designed to have a height increase for revenue purposes. The final possible height? According to the boys at CN....just over 2000 ft or 610m.
Yes, it is true that records are meant to be broken and CN holds the title for a long time but the gang at CN won't give up without a fight and I see a higher CN Tower to at least recapture the observation and telecommunications record.
Burj Dubai is underway and will put a decisive end to all.
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm July 13th, 2005, 05:05 PM Burj Dubai is underway and will put a decisive end to all.
YES, and I'm very happy about that. I thought it sucked that the tallest "structures" on the planet were either antennaes or... antennaes with observation decks. Finally it'll be a habitable building, not an antennae, not a solar tower, not a space elevator...
:) :) :)
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm July 13th, 2005, 08:25 PM http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a57/encon11/DSC01486.jpg

So... I think it's time to move this thread to "Construction" since the backhoe arrived on the scene. :)
aranetacoliseum July 14th, 2005, 06:00 PM nice but i would prefer CN TOWER!
MainDiish July 19th, 2005, 01:30 AM The Jakarta Tower website wont work :?

ncon July 29th, 2005, 07:36 AM sad news for jakarta tower :
http://newsgd.com/pictures/construction/200505230133_42705.jpg
It seems they have changed the height of the new tv-tower in guangzhou again! now they are making it taller, the last decision was to make it 450m now they have increased the height to 610m...
The article:
Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, will harbor the world's tallest building - the to-be-built Guangzhou TV tower will reach 610 meters tall, according to the Tower's construction management center.
The project will cover an area of 175, 000 square meters, with a total investment of 2.215 billion yuan. The first phase of the project will be finished by 2007
finish faster than jakarta tower ^
627 July 29th, 2005, 08:01 AM wat i like about this tower is the fact that they've managed to incorporate traditional indonesian architecture into it, while at the same time giving it a modern twist. put together, the pointy hat-like "roof" along with the three columns, closely resembles those traditional indonesian huts on stilts.
MainDiish July 29th, 2005, 08:04 AM :haha:
city of the future July 29th, 2005, 09:04 AM [QUOTE=[will harbor the world's tallest building
finish faster than jakarta tower ^[/QUOTE]
I dont think so.... BD will be the WTB
Alvin July 29th, 2005, 10:32 AM Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt they'll be able to finish Guangzhou tower in 2 years...the article says "Phase 1" only, without specifying what it means...
ncon July 29th, 2005, 01:27 PM I dont think so.... BD will be the WTB
oh yeah Burj Dubai The tallest building !
Btw is BD tallest tower or building???? :dunno:
nezzybaby July 29th, 2005, 01:48 PM tallest everything, 189ish floors of real building towering way above anything else.

Butcher August 10th, 2005, 08:30 PM looks pretty good. bigger than CN tower too, that's pretty cool.
digili_man August 10th, 2005, 11:20 PM it will probably surpass the CN tower, but it was, is and will always be a classic tower.
Michael_Dean September 15th, 2005, 06:18 AM I heard that the project is definitely cancelled.
true or false?
ncon September 15th, 2005, 06:35 AM ^^ it is not cancelled probably they on-hold or change the design it will resume :)

ZZ-II July 18th, 2006, 10:28 AM someone should make a new thread in the Construction Update section this is only "Highrise News".

Sinjin P. July 19th, 2006, 10:50 AM no sign of Construction and not sure wheter it is on hold or resume
Ugh, that's bad. This is supposed to be the tallest U/C in South East Asia right? Or has something else overtaken?
Weebie July 19th, 2006, 11:37 AM I went there once and the elevator stopped for 20 minutes.
F-ian July 19th, 2006, 12:20 PM ^^ there? where? Jakarta Tower is U/C boy! they didn't put the Elevator yet!
Audiomuse July 19th, 2006, 06:18 PM Its nice. I like it better thab Sumida Tower.
ZZ-II July 19th, 2006, 09:53 PM much better design than sumida tower and Guangzhou TV Tower
CULWULLA July 20th, 2006, 07:29 AM the Guangzhou tower is basically a 450 structure with a 150m pin on top. doesnt compare to a structure like the Jakarta tower.
ZZ-II July 20th, 2006, 09:11 PM I know, but i mean, all these towers have spires, and all of them are Free-Standing towers so they're in the same category or not?
CULWULLA July 21st, 2006, 03:23 AM ^ well yeah. maybe they should count the highest part of superstructure or concrete? but if tower is steel maybe superstructure.
jaystar July 28th, 2006, 12:56 AM ngapain lagi si tu org gila........

Sentient Seas April 14th, 2007, 12:05 PM Very futuristic.
sanhen May 4th, 2007, 12:53 PM Nyah.. no updates.. the construction site is currently only a very big pond and deserted. The project is either postponed or back to the drawing board. I dont think its been can celled though. Indonesia has dreamed about such tower since the first president era.
ZZ-II May 4th, 2007, 01:39 PM a mod should change the title to on Hold
FastFerrari May 6th, 2007, 10:05 AM THATS NOT GOOD.....i juss found out bout this building and it maybe on hold or canned...well the CN Tower is relieved.
ZZ-II May 6th, 2007, 12:54 PM no the CN Tower is definitely not relived....Guangzhou TV tower is UC and will be almost 60m taller than the CN tower. and in some months burj dubai will be the tallest freestanding structure on earth ;)
Kame May 25th, 2007, 02:31 PM so futuristic! amazing one!!!
phunky June 18th, 2007, 02:04 AM Wow this tower is ugly. It has nothing on the CN Tower, which is beautiful.

Avatar June 20th, 2007, 04:44 PM its a futuristic design, its sad to heard on hold.
The design was a shitheap mess and the ugliest thing I have seen in ages.
The design is far from futuristic. It's boring with too many stylistic elements copied from OPT (same designer). It's disgusting overall and you should all be thankfull its been stopped for now. Maybe something more original and better executed can rise in its place.
ZZ-II June 20th, 2007, 06:20 PM i find the design great, hopefully the won't change it ;)
leo82 June 29th, 2007, 04:19 AM magnifico

DAMN I m good August 20th, 2007, 01:57 PM so its canceled ...I am am really unhappy to hear that. t would have been a great addition to Jakarta :fiddle:
Leeigh August 22nd, 2007, 03:45 AM it would be a great addition to Jakarta's skyline but the design is pretty tacky, very much like a cheap trophy, no offense to fellow Jakartaians...I'd like to see a better designed observation tower to complement Jakarta's fast growing skyline..
paw25694 August 22nd, 2007, 03:08 PM ^ hmm yeah, the design is kinda tacky.
it's unclear, nor cancelled or U/C :)
rilham2new August 22nd, 2007, 03:50 PM :master: Even though I'm Indonesian ,,, and waiting some supertalls to be build in our country ....

Cristovão471 August 24th, 2007, 10:47 AM So stupid building this, Jakarta has mass poverty and the money is being spent on lame observation/tv towers.
This reminds me of the Empire state building getting built during the Great Depression.
paw25694 August 24th, 2007, 01:50 PM ^ hmm.. it's not a govt project. its funded by private christian organization :)
MDguy November 20th, 2007, 02:30 AM looks like a pretty okay project! i didn't even know it existed!
This reminds me of the Empire state building getting built during the Great Depression.
you mean giving jobs to people who couldn't get jobs was worthless in the depression? and sorry to break the news, but new york also has its fair share of poverty problems and builidngs are still going up there

Jim856796 February 21st, 2008, 07:03 AM The Jakarta TV Tower was to be completed in the 2010s, but that is not likely as this tower will be cancelled. Why is the tower being cancelled anyway?
Cah SMG February 21st, 2008, 07:38 AM It's not formally cancelled, but they are working on it in a snail pace, continue to dig a huge hole....

had94zz August 20th, 2008, 08:45 PM Jakarta's 'tower jungle' to be felled
Mustaqim Adamrah , The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Wed, 05/28/2008 12:56 PM | City
The Jakarta administration is planning to replace the city's 2500 base transreceiver station (BTS) towers with 850 newer, more strategically located towers, an official said Tuesday.
City spatial planning agency head Wiriyatmoko said the new towers would be erected at 850 different locations as recommended in a study by PT Jakarta Komunikasi.
PT Jakarta Komunikasi is a subsidiary of city-owned construction firm PT Jakarta Propertindo.
"More than 800 BTS towers will be built on vacant land throughout Jakarta. Each tower will be used by at least three cellular operators," Wiriyatmoko said at City Hall.
"The spatial planning agency will determine the towers' design. We're still working on it."
He said the plan to remove the existing towers came after complaints they made the city look like a "tower jungle".
More than 1,700 legally built BTS towers will be dismantled, Sarwo Handayani, assistant to city secretary for development, said Monday.
The plan is a follow-up of a 2006 regulation requiring cellular operators to share towers -- a system which industry experts say would drastically reduce each company's operating costs.
The concept was first introduced in Jakarta in 2001, with a gubernatorial decree stipulating each tower be used by at least two cellular operators.
As a result of the 2001 ruling, the city's property management and control agency stopped issuing licenses for new towers in 2000. The licenses for the existing 1,700 towers expired in 2006, but because the PT Jakarta Komunikasi study was only completed this year, temporary extensions were granted earlier this month.
The temporary licenses will expire as soon as the city administration starts implementing the plan to dismantle existing towers and build new ones.
Last year, the property management and control agency dismantled 75 of 1,508 towers whose licenses had expired.
Hari Sasongko, head of the agency, said the planned dismantling of towers this year could meet with budgetary hurdles.
"It costs between Rp 15 million (US$1,609) and Rp 20 million to dismantle a 20 to 30-meter-high tower," he said.
Heru Sutadi, a member of the Indonesian Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, said most cellular operators supported the shared tower concept in principle.
"But some towers cannot be used by more than two operators," he said.
"The administration should also allow operators to use one tower each for towers that serve as core nodes in their networks."
had94zz August 20th, 2008, 08:45 PM Emaar Jakarta tower to be the tallest in SE Asia
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Tue, 05/06/2008 2:01 PM | Business
Dubai-based real estate giant Emaar Properties plans to build a landmark tower in Jakarta, which would be the tallest skyscraper in Southeast Asia, a presidential envoy says.
Special envoy for the Middle East Alwi Shihab said Monday the Chairman of Emaar, Mohamed Ali Alabbar, had proposed the project to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during an informal meeting on Saturday.
"At the moment, we're still looking for the right location in Jakarta for the site of the project... we are ready to build the tower, our homework is to find the right location, " Alwi told The Jakarta Post.
Emaar, the largest land and real estate developer in the Gulf, is famed for its ongoing construction of Burj Dubai in Dubai, which would be the highest skyscraper in the world. The 718 meter-tall building is scheduled to be fully constructed by the end of this year.
Alwi said the Jakarta project was part of the company's commitment to invest in Indonesia.
In March, Emaar signed a joint venture agreement with the state-owned Bali Tourism Development Corporation to build an integrated tourism project in southern Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, with a total investment of US$600 million. During the initial stage, they would build four luxury hotels, including Ritz Carlton and Giorgio Armani hotels, along with related tourist facilities.
"Emaar has started building its offices in Lombok and is carrying out trainings in conjunction with the tourism ministry for locals to assist in its projects," Alwi said, adding that up until now, the Indonesian government had received investments worth almost $5 billion from the Middle East and that it was targeting to attract $10 billion by 2009.
He said among those committed to invest in the country was Ras Al-Khaimah of the United Arab Emirates, which would bring a total investment worth $1.5 billion to construct an integrated port at Tanjung Api-Api, and a railway line from Palembang to Tanjung Api-Api.
Another company, Dubai Drydock, is ready to invest up to US$1 billion for the construction of a shipyard and an industrial city in Batam.
The envoy said the company had opened its office in Indonesia and had paid for the project's land, while adding that conglomerate company Pacific Inter-Link planned to invest US$500 million in a palm oil refinery plant in Dumai, Riau.
Dubai-based Al Ghurair Group also showed its commitment to invest around $500 million in the renovation and improvement of old refinery plants.
Previously, Saudi Telecom Company's Axis invested US$1 billion in the telecommunication industry. Alwi said the investors hoped to fully realize their commitments soon.
"Some of them complained that bureaucracy in our country has been too slow in responding to their proposals. While it only takes a few months to manage permits in Malaysia, for example, it could take years in Indonesia," Alwi said.
This had caused many of them to invest in Malaysia and Singapore instead, he added.
ZZ-II August 20th, 2008, 09:25 PM cool news, but what has this to do with the jakarta tower? seems it is an different project

ZZ-II November 28th, 2008, 02:20 PM so the tower is UC again? great to hear that :).
f.e.s.b.r. November 29th, 2008, 03:58 AM wonderful looking tower
OMH November 29th, 2008, 03:59 AM I don't really like the design, but it's still nice that Jakarta is getting a supertall, even if it's "only" a TV Tower...
In the last few years we had a TV/observation tower boom ,esp. in Asia, as Teheran, Guangzhou and Tokyo all have Towers U/C, which is a great thing IMO, because TV towers often become more a landmark for a city than skyscrapers , like CN Tower in Toronto, or the Fernsehturm in Berlin.
Jude12 November 29th, 2008, 05:00 AM Well.. i don't like the design. But i think it will look great when constructed. :D Go Jakarta! :okay:
DJ_Archuleta November 30th, 2008, 12:43 PM Hopefully they will continue to build it
VRS December 2nd, 2008, 03:43 AM its great news..but once again..the design its to old style for next future design..
Imperfect Ending December 3rd, 2008, 04:49 AM This one is really beautiful :)
VRS December 4th, 2008, 04:45 AM but i like the location of this tower..its strategic place in jakarta area...
stanleymalls December 4th, 2008, 05:02 AM I don't really like the design, but it's still nice that Jakarta is getting a supertall, even if it's "only" a TV Tower...

Don't forget Manila. :nocrook:
VRS December 5th, 2008, 03:41 AM yup of course congratulation to Manila...the construction has begin right ??
sindrom December 6th, 2008, 11:23 AM I'd prefer this tower will not to be continue due to its outdated designs, which a quite far of main CBD too.
christos-greece December 6th, 2008, 11:30 AM Will be a nice tower :)
So "on hold" in the title of this thread should be changed :) Right?
AAG December 7th, 2008, 06:48 PM yeah and Jakarta will arrives more 2 supertalls
St Moritz--->under construction approximate +/-332m
Emaar Jakarta tower--->Proposed but will be the tallest in ASEAN Approx ++600m
VRS December 9th, 2008, 04:37 AM I'd prefer this tower will not to be continue due to its outdated designs, which a quite far of main CBD too.
hah?? based of what ur reason like that ??^^
are high rise tower should build at main CBD only ??
CULWULLA December 9th, 2008, 05:18 AM is this UC? if not should be in proposed section.
sindrom December 9th, 2008, 12:00 PM hah?? based of what ur reason like that ??^^

So - what based ur reason to say "highrise" only in the main of CBD?
I was obviously according its height and the located, thus tower are not fits enough to effect all surrounded...it will more precise if does built integrates in the center of cbd such many other city as Toronto even shanghai, where a skyscraper are pulled there and the gap is just too far for me. either it won't be good only seeing one single area tower ..though ain't expected whether its U/C? at least can get more better designs.
VRS December 10th, 2008, 04:38 AM is this UC? if not should be in proposed section.
i think the progress still not 100% UC....

VRS December 12th, 2008, 04:53 AM i see no problem lah about the design...the architect design has do their job .

We can see the progress of this project. But still not sure it's going to U/C or still on-hold project. Going to a big parking park?
sindrom December 13th, 2008, 09:52 AM ^^^^ To prove the pics is not really funny ; although this pics has been posted before somewher on this forum? But i'll wait my comment until got better info. :)
Nenek Genit December 16th, 2008, 08:15 AM i love the design so much..but i hate the 'on hold' word..
i hope the construction begin soon n taller than before..
VRS December 17th, 2008, 03:55 AM i think 558m its not bad....the important its design should more related with jakarta culture...
Nenek Genit December 17th, 2008, 09:45 AM ^^ Jakarta culture?you mean Betawi/batavia culture?i can't imagine some kind of 'ondel-ondel' style on the roof top or something..maybe that would be beautiful n fantastic..or maybe you can describe it for me?
welshdragon08 December 17th, 2008, 10:19 AM This tower kind of looks like a newer version of the Space Needle. http://tinyurl.com/697awf/.gif (http://tinyurl.com/6g9pxn) http://tinyurl.com/5qr7b3/.gif (http://tinyurl.com/5joq9s) http://tinyurl.com/6qxg5q/.gif (http://tinyurl.com/6bsl3a)

DJ_Archuleta January 24th, 2009, 08:07 AM World’s tallest skyscraper for Indonesia
Indonesia could have one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world within three years, soaring 558 metres (1831 feet) above Jakarta, an official said on Friday (January 23).
Despite the world economic crisis, a consortium of local businessmen has agreed to go ahead with the mammoth “Jakarta Tower” in the northern Kemayoran area of the capital, development official Sarwo Handayani said.
“The project has been halted for more than a decade. Now, the developers want to resume the project with added technology,” she said.
“Hopefully, the tower can be finished by 2012. It will be something that Indonesians can be proud of.”
The tallest building in the world is Taiwan’s Taipei 101, which stands up to 508 metres.
But the under-construction Burj Dubai tower in the Gulf state of Dubai will be the tallest when it is finished, at over 800 metres.
Anberlin January 24th, 2009, 08:23 AM 558m isn't really that close to World's Tallest Skyscraper. And it's not even a skyscraper in a true sense.. I think.
CULWULLA January 24th, 2009, 11:59 AM have they heard of Dubai?
also there are other towers uc or planned higher then CN towers 553m. jakarta people have to realise it would have been tallest tower about 10 years ago when it was first mooted, but hello its 2009???
RonnieR January 24th, 2009, 12:26 PM The article never claimed that it would surpass other supertalls in Dubai or anywhere else, it just stated that it would be "one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world".....so, it still makes sense.
