Thats why LA is special. People came here to live not squeezed in in like the 50s and 60s. We just started building up in the 80s, stuff doesn't happen that fast.

One thing that I love about the LA skyline is the fact that it mutates. I mean no matter what angle you look at it, it always changes.

Looking at this pic, and imagining all the buildings going up soon, the skyline is gonna be so much wider, with the area around staples really booming with about 10 towers currently U/C or approved (metropolis with three towers, LA Live, Elleven Project, and a few others so mayber even more than 10) and streching the other way as well with the Grand ave plan and its 5 - 6 towers. In 5 years, our Skyline is going to look twice as big.

Not sure I understand this comment...the only other U.S. CBD skylines "larger in size" by any criterion would be Manhattan and Chicago...an outside argument could be made for Houston or maybe Altanta in this grouping, I suppose. Also, LA has at least two other skylines, Century City (impressive in it's own right) and Westwood, plus the Mid-Wilshire and Miracle Mile districts. I'm not a big ol' rah rah LA booster by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to call out stupid, vapid comments containing backhanded compliments when I see 'em.

Thinking about it..LA has a young group of skyscrapers. Union Bank (Second building from the left in Silverlake's picture) was build in the early 60's? US Bank in 1989. Gas Co and Cal Plaza 1 in 1992. Seems as though downtown is under a skyscraper boom like it saw in the late 80's/early 90's. Now more than ever is a awesome time to live in Los Angeles.

Those are just the main projects (LA Live, Grand Ave and Metropolis). Add in the two 30 story buildings next to the Stck exchange building, the Numerous 25 - 35 story residentials in the south park area and others as well, the boom is on.

Couple of questions: What will happen to the residential building boom in downtown San Diego and Los Angeles if the housing market comes to a grinding halt as far as increasing equity?? What if housing prices go down 5 to 10%? Do you think there will be a dramatic reduction in the amount of towers built? Or maybe just 4 or 5 will fall by the wayside.
Question 2: What if there is a major economic slowdown in the US due to a real estate bubble bursting, extremely high oil prices over a sustained period or a terrorist attack in a major metro area? Will this affect the building booms in So Cal's downtowns? Will developers pull back and wait out the recession?
Or the odds of a terrorist attack in Los Angeles are fairly decent. I know many people think it will be NY or DC again but I tend to think LA is definitely a target. So I wouldn't count on all of these buildings going up because we are in extremely volatile times both in terms of the economy and terrorism.
What are your thoughts? Thanks

Clearly those events will affect the Building boom, but i think the market can sustain a mild reduction in housing prices since the demand is so high. amost all these new buildings and conversions have waiting list, some as high as a couple 1000 and others are appreciating very quickly. Developers and future residents cant worry about terrorist attacks becuase in my opinion you cant live life like that, so hopefully the building boom will continue.

Interesting..!! however, you can rest assured that the library tower will NOT remain the citys tallest building. At some point in the near/distant future, an office, or even possibly a residential tower will surpass it as the tallest building in Los Angeles. And i'm sure we all would agree with this.
I don't totally agree with it not looking good as 2nd or 3rd tallest. though i would agree that it would not look good as 2nd or 3rd tallest if the other said "taller" buildings, where within 5 blocks of the US bank tower. I personally think that this building is one of the best, from the Pei, Cobb, Freed, team (Cobb, was the design principle) and is in a class of it's own.
However the area within a 5 block radius of the US bank tower is pretty well built out, so if it is surpassed, it at least will retain it's dominance of the immidiate area, plus there are many architectural design firm's, producing quality work, that could complement the US bank tower, even if taller.
I've been around awhile, and remember this city getting four tallest buildings, the headlines where as follows;
40 story HQ. for Union Bank, to be tallest building Los Angeles. (1966)
Atlantic Richfield to build twin 52 story office tower's, becoming tallest buildings in Los Angeles. (1970)
United California Bank, to build 62 story HQ. tower in downtown Los Angeles, it will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi river. (1975)
First Interstate Bank, to sign lease with option, on 300.000 sq.ft. of the Miguire Thomas, library tower development, the 73 story office tower will be the tallest building in Los Angeles. (1989)
Citys always grow, and allthough i may be dead before it happens, a taller one will be built.

Yes, I do remember the First Interstate Tower fire. As a matter of fact I went Downtown, that night, but the Fire Department closed the area for three surrounding blocks, so I could only get as close as Wells Fargo Center. The fire completely destroyed (gutted) floors 12 through 16. The next day, all that was left, (of the said floors) was structural steel framing and sections of the core walls...other then that, the area was open to the elements.
Because of the fire being so low in the tower, the fire department was greatly concerned of structural failure and possible collapse of the tower. (which was why the streets were closed..incase the tower fell over). However, the structure suffered no damage, or deformities due to extreme heat. (the spray-on fire proofing or "Monocote" did its job)...what was notable about this fire was that the heat produced an updraft, or chimney effect with updrafts that prevented rescue choppers from landing on the tower...which has been my argument with the helicopter pad law,in Los Angeles. (As you know, Los Angeles is the only major city in the U.S. that has a skyscraper helicopter pad requirement.)
Even though the AON/First Interstate tower is quite the bland international style glass box, I personally like the tower for two reasons. One, it was the first 60 plus story building, west of the Mississippi River. And two, from certain angles (and more so, on it's narrow side) she looks pretty good, and tall.

Has there been any other high rise fire in LA?

I've been around awhile, and remember this city getting four tallest buildings, the headlines where as follows;
But if LA gets a skyscraper taller than The US Bank Tower, the architecture should be impressive and if possible, more impressive and world class. But personally, I like LA's skyline the way it is and The US Bank Tower being the tallest!
