This death I actually do care about.

Although contraversial, there is no doubt that he is one of the great, if not the greatest Australian architects of our time. For those who refuse to appreciate his sort of architecture, that is their loss.

The end of an era!

Not the same anyway. Probably wont be seeing any more "seidler clones" anymore.
I mean, they were his designs. His collegues would have their own ideas.

christarrant: did he design Riparian plaza before or after his stroke?
dear oh dear...that was good!

and his buildings are to DIE for...

well, I think that his early modernism was good. Rose Seidler house is still great and was well ahead of its time. But his method of bulldozing whole blocks of heritage value was despicable, and most of his scraper designs left much to be desired. I rather liked his low rise modern houses, but disliked most of his scraper work, except perhaps horizon/latitude (I can't remember which is which). australia "square" and MLC were ahead of their time, but does time look kindly on them? truly, we all hated the awnings/sunshades and mushrooming of the same design - ugh...even his institutional buildings (like Waverley City Council) were dreadful IMHO. well, end of an era...

I'm sure i am not the only one to have noticed this, but this a copycat design of Sydney's skyscraper behind Circular Quay. Did he rip off other architects existing designs??

Which hospital is he in, for the stroke? does anybody know? Penny's father suffered from a stressed artery on his left thigh (we think it was originally DVT from the flight back from surfers paradise), and spent time in Cronulla-Sutherland hospital. there was an architect there who had a stroke who did some buildings.. for divine homes.. some of his r built at this estate in cambelltown.

Alot of his buildings look similar. But in international terms there is nothing like them and it will be a long time before we have such a distinctive architect again.

Sam - that building in Melbourne, the Shell Building was designed before that one behind circular quay - as I said a lot of his designs were similar. Unfortunately the Shell Building was one of his worst designs, it would have been better on a Sydney lot where the the density of the buildings would have ensured the ugly ends were covered. Perhaps one day they will be.

I have no wish for him to pass away yet and as I've posted quite a few times in this forum, despite what you think about his designs truly becomes irrelevant in his times of sickness. Harry Seidler was born in Vienna in 1923 (which makes him about 82 - 83 years old), arriving in Australia in 1948 from the United States.

Harry Seidler has truly become one of Australia's interantional architects, with projects already completed in Hong Kong and his birthplace Vienna. To see more of Seidler's projects in Mexico, Hong Kong and Vienna go to Seidler's Projects (http://www.seidler.net.au)

I will refrain from saying anything except it looks like he came very close to dinner for the crocodile embryo.

I will say I like Capita Centre and love Hamilton House, that house is like my dream home - perfect in everyway, I love modernist Bauhaus inspired houses like this one.

Funilly enough I hate most of his buildings, it's a great shame most of his buildings evoke a boring sameness on such a visible scale across our country I would like to have seen an expression of style that pushed boundaries with some alternative interpretations.

however no matter how you look at it, he has acheived alot in his time thus far and this is a credit to him. His works will live on for many generations to come.

Good or bad news, depending on how you see it:

Seidler out of intensive care

07may05
LEADING Australian architect Harry Seidler, who suffered a stroke on Anzac Day, has been moved out of intensive care and is doing well, according to hospital staff.

The 81-year-old was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital intensive care unit (ICU) on Anzac Day after he collapsed at his home.

Mr Seidler was moved from ICU into a regular ward yesterday, but it was not yet known how much longer he would spend in hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"He has been moved into a normal ward out of intensive care and he's now in a stable condition," she said.

Mr Seidler, who is credited with introducing modernist architecture to Australia, designed Sydney's first office tower, Australia Square, and the later MLC centre and Grosvenor Place.

His career in Australia was launched when he designed and built a free-flowing house for his mother at Turramurra, in Sydney's north, between 1948 and 1950.

Mr Seidler's wife, Penelope Evatt Seidler, is also an architect and a partner in his firm, Harry Seidler and Associates.

Actually, Australia Square holds up well, and will continue to as long as it's kept CLEAN.

just because he is in a stable condition doesn't mean he hasn't been permanently affected by the stroke - a massive stroke is a pretty big thing, and you don't recover from that easily...

he may be unable to move or communicate with the outside world as far as we know.

CULWULLA

yeah a stroke is a big thing and most never recover to original state. he might loose ability to walk or speak properly. sometimes it changes your personality! i had a freind that has an uncle and he was a jolly wine drinking happy go lucky italian guy in his 60;s and he had a stroke 3 years ago. he had to learn to speak again & write. he couldnt walk that good and was very slow with responding to your questions. he also became aggitated alot and only last year spilt up from his wife of 40 years after attacking her. harry light not be able to assist anymore with his designs. so some people will be happy.
cammo- i too think Australia is a classic and still looks modern! its nearly 40 years old.

Seidler gets citizenship back
August 02, 2005
From: AAP
ESTEEMED architect Harry Seidler is expected to have his Australian citizenship reinstated immediately.

A spokesman for Citizenship Minister John Cobb said the Immigration Department had reversed a decision made in 1996 which unknowingly deprived Mr Seidler of his citizenship.
Mr Seidler, 82, has an Australian passport and is a Companion of the Order of Australia, but Immigration officials say he is Austrian, not Australian.

The Australian Electoral Commission advised him of his status last week after he requested a change of address on the electoral roll.

Mr Seidler, who is recovering from a stroke, became an Australian citizen in 1958, 20 years after escaping Nazi rule in his native Austria.

Austria honoured him in 1985 by reinstating his lost citizenship in a gesture which Immigration says meant the architect lost the right to carry his Australian passport.

Advertisement:
However, no one told Mr Seidler for two decades.
"The department has vacated the decision they took in 1996 on Mr Seidler's citizenship and effectively reinstated citizenship," Mr Cobb's spokesman said.

The minister was due to issue a media release with details later today.

Australia Square in Sydney, the Australian embassy in Paris and the MLC building in Melbourne are among the public buildings designed by Mr Seidler's architecture firm.

OMG i had no idea Seidler was responsible for that absolute blight on Sydney's Harbour: the Blues Point tower!!! I used to shudder everytime I would go over the Bridge when I would see that heap of shit. It makes me understand why Sydney planning is so anti-height these days, its an over-correction to stop that sort of shite happening again. I always thought he was a hack, reproducing the same designs over and over but that is UNFORGIVABLE. Someone hold a pillow over his head now!

hey Blues Point Tower was the Eureka of its time!!! Australia's tallest apartment tower in 1961. just look at its location. what about views from the tower. try not to focus too much on the tower.it was pioneering architecture in 1950';s lol

Has anyone read about the grey cloud of his Australian citizenship? For 19 years he wasn't legally Australian because under section 7 of the Citizenship Act, Austrian Ministry reclaimed his citizenship. He escaped Austria during the Nazi occupation.

Now he's elegible to recieve Australian Honours award.
