I'm Vietnamese-Indian and was born in France!

I was born in Saigon and moved to the US in 1994.....currently a student studying architecture in New York City.....my permanent home is in Boston though..

I'm Chinese from Taipei, Taiwan. My mom used to take me to Vietnamese restaurants every Sunday when I was in Taiwan and that's how I first got interested in Vietnamese culture :)

I currently live in Houston TX and we have a lot of Vietnamese here. A good number of my friends are Vietnamese and so are four of my ex-girlfriends. I picked up a little Vietnamese here and there and I am also learning Chu Nom (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/chunom.htm) on and off.

I've never been to Vietnam but would like to take a trip there one day. :)

I LOVE Bo Luc Lac, it's my favorite Vietnamese dish. :)

Although recently I started to eat less meat so I have Dau Hu Luc Lac more often.

Geez, calm the heck down...

Dau Hu as in tofu, I don't know if I spelled it right as I am not Vietnamese. It's just like Bo Luc Lac but made with fried tofu instead of beef chunks.

I don't know if it's some kind "new" dish but I've found it at at least 5 different Vietnamese restaurants around Houston.

As you probably already know the area has the highest concentration of Vietnamese restaurant in teh US...so it very likely Dau Hu Luc Lac is from there....but i doubt it...i think it has been there way before that

Fortunately...nothing was happend to our house.

But for example my school was flooded. So we had many days free. Now it was renovated.
Arcades and some malls in the downtown were renovated too. The downtown in Dresden is full of construction zones now. I will try to take some photos before my summer holiday.

I was born in Saigon and moved to US when I was 6 and very proud of my Vietnamese root (more than my Chinese root).

I'm happy we finally have our own forum. I've known this website over a year but just becoming a formal member since vietnam forum established.

About me:

I was born in Saigon and immigrated to USA about 10 years ago. I live in Seattle now. I never had a chance to visit Saigon since then, maybe in the next 2 years.

I'm 110 % vietnamese (Kinh people), i can speak Cantonese fluently, a little bit Mandarin , majoring in French. I'm so into architecture and language. I hope i can make some french friends and mandarin friends here to help me out :) . We can exchange and study sometimes.

Do we have some members living in vietnam( and saigon)? It' great if they can update news or pics.

Versalvin, I will be soon! I'm planning to live in the Mekong-delta city of Can Tho. I lived in the house on Phan Thanh Gian (Dien Bien Phu) at the corner of Cao Thang until 1990, and currently in Southern California. I'm trying to wrap things up here before able to say "let's go!" Not quite sure when that will be, but that's my goal. I will always be a part of this forum where ever I live.

Have you ever tried Pho Thanh Lich? It's on the corner of brookhurst and hazard. They have great filet mignon. I just tell the waitress/waiter to get me "Pho Filet Mignon" and they know what im talking about. :)

Where do you find some good bò lúc lac at? Have you eaten at lùc đinh ký before? They have some good bò lúc lac. What about brodard? Their famous for their delicious nêm cuốn.

What about restaurant's you don't like? I don't like Phở Thành on Bolsa in between Bushard and Brookhurst. Lùc đinh ký is right across the street from Phở Thành. Top Baguette is good for some Bánh Mì. It's on the corner of Bolsa/Magnolia. My favorite place for Cơm Tám is Cơm Tám Thuân Kiều. It's also on Bolsa/Magnolia in the same plaza as the Bank of America/ABC supermarket.

Oh and I'm ethnically full vietnamese, but I was born and raised in orange county.

Wow I had bò lúc lac at brodard about 3 months ago!!! I notice that at least it seems to me that every restaurant has different bò lúc lac, some use green peppers like Pho 54, some have no tomatoes, etc. As for restaurants that I do not like, the only one that I can think of is Pho Hoa, and I think that it is a national chain. I also eat bò lúc lac sometimes at I think Pho Saigon in Artesia. Haha this is weird I wake up at 2:45am and my PC is on and I see this!!!! I will have to try lùc đinh ký, I never ate there before!!

Well more about me is that I moved out here in 1984! Lived in various places in LA county and then moved to BP in 2001!

I went to Vung Tau with my cousins and aunt a few months ago on my first ever trip to Vietnam. I went to a restaurant there and it seemed as if there were almost 200 people in the restaurant! The beach isn't as nice as other beaches in Vietnam, but Vung Tau seems to be the closest beach destination for Saigon locals. :)

My favorite places for dim sum are Empress Pavilion in Chinatown or Ocean Star in Monterey Park. If I have not the time then I go to something like Furiwa at westminster and brookhurst

i had been in Vung Tau alot of times when i was still in vietnam, and Vung Tau took my heart for not only the awesome beach but also the restaurant "cay bang" in Ba~i Da^u or something. it is super super famous, but the food are quite cheap since the reataurant is kinda "bi`nh da^n" .. has anybody here come to that reataurant when traveling in Vung Tau yet.
if not then try it out someday when you can.. believe me that since you already try it, you will miss it forever.

Cool....seems like VT residents, they don't build a lot of tube house, at least it makes this neighborhood looks nicer . Something you can tell apart from other cities.

people keep talking about bo luc lac, but what is bo luc lac look like? I told myself to try that everytime i go to Vnmese restaurant, but by the time I got there I only order 1 thing I know "Pho"

Bang, bridges with no holes so far...hehehe..our foundation at the abutments has to be no less then 95% compaction and we do keep records of every single count of hammer blows that drive the piles into the ground...:) Concrete has to get up to 25MPa within 28days and no bambo for steel please...:) our bridges were designed to hold up to 9.0 richter scale eq...:) and I don't have $7 mil to bet on the up coming wold cup....hehehe

I don't think you can find good bo luc lac in a pho house though. everytime I go to pho house I always call number 1 xe lua add bo vien...:)

Phan Thiet is wonderful, you must have enjoyed being there.

I went there last year for the first time...It's a nice place...I love the ocean and the sand hill there in Mui Ne.

Welcome on board. Would you please explain why you have great memories of Vietnamese people? What makes Vietnam unique and special according to your personal experiences when you were over there? Thank you.

Yes Phan Thiet was indeed beautiful even though it was the worst of times for everyone involved. I realized if you took away the barbed wire and the guard towers Phan Thiet could be paradise. We were just to the south of Phan Thiet maybe 1 mile and I loved swimming in the South China Sea.

As for the people I met. I don't know where to begin, from the Vietnamese barbers I had conversations with, to a very lovely Vietnamese girl I met when my unit went to Song Mau to a very little girl, also in Song Mao, (maybe 4 or 5 years old) named Mai Lin (not sure if I spelled that right) they were all terrific people. Mai's father was in the South Vietnamese Army and was camped across from our mess hall. Everyday Mai Lin would visit me and I would give her a plate of food for her and her family.

I always wondered what happened to her. I hope she's happy and healthy. Just think, she would be around 40 years old now. Damn I'm getting old.

Sorry for rambling on but I do love your country and I'm pleased to see the economy is going so strong. Everyone was so poor when I was there

i'm here at little saigon, orange county. i want to work for cbre in vn, the thing is i dont have the convenience of being in vn to apply for a position in vn, plus a cv is just not what i feel comfortable in providing, especially with the part that requires the history of my family and ancestors.
