Many foreign businesses are interested in the Xang Square Tourist Complex and some of them are already booking floor space in the centre. "Some of our units were already booked last year by foreigners and local businessmen," said Jessica Lim, Senior Sales Executive of Xang Square Tourist Complex.

Xang Square is located on Don Chanh next to the Don Chanh Palace Hotel, the first five star hotel currently being built in Laos. The complex is a Don Chanh development project being undertaken by Sun Holdings Company, a Malaysian investor.

Jessica explained that the foreign businessmen who booked the complex are from Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Thailand, the US, Canada and Australia. "Many people called us for information," said another sales executive. "Many foreigners are interested in the complex because it is the first big shopping complex to be built in Laos," said Jessica.

A two-day lecture to launch the sale of space in the complex started yesterday for interested people to get more details. "People have visited our office to get more details on the booking of units in the complex," said Grace Chong, another sales executive.

Xang Square is expected to be completed within two years. Jessica said that the people of Vientiane would be able to go on shopping sprees at the nation's biggest shopping centre in 2006.

Units are available for the public to book at different prices depending on their size and location. The land lease is for a 50 year concession period. There is also a discount promotion for the space. The initial rental fee is payable within 2 years depending on the progress of the construction. The customers would put down a US$ 200 deposit before then.

"I am glad the price is calculated year by year because it is quite a lot of money for me to pay all at once," said Ms Vat, a local businesswoman interested in the complex. She said that a 4 x 4m piece of floor space cost US$ 30,000 for 50 years. So it is only US$600 per year or US$ 50 per month. "I am interested in it, but it is quite a lot of money so I will discuss it with my boyfriend first," said Vat. "It is good for businessmen who have a lot of money," she added.

The two-storey shopping complex will be built on 96,876 square metres and consists of 1,500 different units.

The complex will not only have the basics of any modern building, such as a centralised air-conditioning system, escalators, elevators, restrooms and public phones, it will also consist of a food court, restaurants, an exhibition space, an information counter and board, a medical room and foreign exchange counters. The complex also will provide a large area for parking cars and motorbikes.

Exhibitions, game shows, artistic performances and other entertainment will also be held at the complex to make it the centre of attraction of Vientiane. It will be more than just a place for shopping. "It will be a place for a new entertainment experience for Lao people," said Jessica.

Future developments on Don Chanh include hospitals, colleges, gas stations, commercial areas, apartments and office buildings.

I think that Laonese and Thai are kind of similar languages (both spoken and written), but Cambodian is an entirely different language in all senses. The differences between cultures, languages, ethnicity etc. are far more big in Asia than in Europe for example.

All three are related. Thai and Lao (both the language and alphabet) are pretty similar, while Khmer is a lot more different. Many Thais also speak Lao, but few speak Khmer.

I'll leave the detailed explanation to the experts around here.

Regarding this development. Although it's probably good for the economy of Vientiane I'd really hate to see it built! Vientiane is very unique.. new buildings need to fit in better than this.

IN five years time, Vientiane Talat Sao (or Morning Market) will be drastically different from what it is today. Talat Sao will be redeveloped into a modern shopping centre, housing more than 1,600 shops selling all kinds of merchandise. There will also be a 400-lot carpark in the shopping centre. On 2 December, Singapore Excalibur Group Pte Ltd, inked a US$27 million project to redevelop Talat Sao in three phases. In Phase I, temporary shop space would be set up in front of the Post Office while the construction of a three-storey building takes place. In Phase II, merchants would move their wares to the temporary three-storey building, while construction of another four-storey (including basement) building commences. In the final phase, the temporary block would be demolished and the new face of Talat Sao unveiled to the public. Excalibur expects the redevelopment project to be completed by 2009.

THE renovation of the Morning Market under the Morning Market Revamping Project (MMRP), which is an investment from the Singapore businessmen, will start on 6 February. In order to prepare for the renovation works, the Administrative Board of Morning Market held a meeting on 29 January to brief the merchants. Project-1 will start from the right wing of the main building that is opposite to the Post Office. Mr Bounphon Sisoulath, Head of Vientiane Capital Trade Division, who sits in the Task Force Committee, said that the objective for reconstructing the Morning Market is to expand and build a trade and tourist centre in Vientiane Capital. ?This area will be a centre for trade exchange and relations between producers and consumers nationwide and foreign countries. We want it to be a modern shopping centre, said Mr Bounphon. The project is valued at US$27 million. Under the first phase of the project, a Singapore construction company will build a four-storey car park. It will spend the next nine months to work on the west wing of the main building opposite the Post Office. The stone foundation laying ceremony will be held on 6 February.

You gotta speak one language to know the difference between the three but its easy with Thai with Cambodian or Laotian with Cambodian. May be kinda tricky with Thai and Laotian thought. But like I its like finding the difference between Ö and Õ

Well in my experience people in Nongkhai in another districts some of them speak really Lao event villager in Muang District and some time when I met Laos most I don't understand it not because I'm Thai and they are Laos but it's because we have so many different ways to use the words.

They are certainly related because they both originated from sanskrit(?).

I'm not sure but maybe they were both developed at the same time and turned out different because of the cultures living separately. The Thai script has probably changed more since its beginnings than Khmer... just guessing, as it looks more simplified.

We were taught at school that King Ramkhamhaeng invented the Thai alphabet and he adopted it from the Khmer. Whether this is true or not I don't know..

It's amazing though how Lao's alphabets are so similar to Thai's. For example I can understand most of the texts in that Laotian article posted by Bizbote.
BTW I notice how Thai & Lao are very similar in that we adore the elephants!!!

i used to visit one museum about that in Sukothai, speaking about the evolkution of those languaes. and from what i remameber, Thai was very similar to Laos writting. then words might be different, don't know

According to K.Jo and K.Pas are right. Thai alphabets were adapted from ancient Khmer alphabet and Thai words are mostly originated by Sansakrit and Pali Languages as we learned in school.

Foundation laid for Golden Boten City

THE Golden Boten City Project, which will be a new link for the ASEAN region in Laos, had a foundation stone laying ceremony on Monday in Namtha district, Luang Namtha province.
The project, which took one year to survey and will use an area of 1,640 hectares, will take about 10 years to complete. Golden Boten City Company runs the project.
The Governor of Luang Namtha province Mr Seng-nhong Vongchankham said that the Golden Boten City would be a place for many important activities with neighbouring countries and the world such as services, trade and tourists meeting place.
"This is good for expanding trade relationship cooperation between Laos and China," Mr Seng-nhong said. "It will be good for the local people to have more work as well as upgrading their living conditions and education."
The President of the Golden Boten City Company Mr Wong Man Suen said, "this is a development project to transit and exchange goods, tourists and services."

"The company will build warehouses for storing materials from abroad, international meeting centres, agricultural and industrial processing factories and entertainment venues.
"The project is not only for the development of the economy, tourism sites and transit services of ASEAN countries as well as Japan, China and Republic of Korea. It is also a good sample to show that the Lao Government is opening up to the world by attracting foreign direct investment, as is the Government's policy," Mr Wong Man Suen said.
The Deputy President of the company, Mr Thongphanh Rattanasamay said that the project area was very suitable for international meetings and businesses from both inside and outside the country. Its location is on the Lao-Chinese border, there will be a highway 'R3' from Kunming, China, through Luang Namtha and Bokeo provinces to Bangkok, Thailand.
Mr Wong Man Suen said that there would be three phases for the project's construction. The first phase will take about three years and will cost US$103 million over an area of 22,000 square metres. The construction will be an international exchange goods centre and a centre of transition of goods for ASEAN countries as well as Japan, Republic of Korea and China.
But the investment for the second and third phases has not been revealed yet.
He said that the second phase would be an international meeting centre including 2,500 luxurious bedrooms for business people. The third phase will feature 2,000 bedrooms to facilitate visitors who travel in groups or families. There will be a golf course with 18 holes and 500 guesthouses will be built. Eco-tourism sites and the traditions and culture of ethnic minority groups will attract foreign visitors.
"There will also be a 26 square metre venue for buying high value products such as pearls and jewelry from abroad," said Wong Man Suen.
Golden Boten City will offer a boost to Lao tourism. Every year over 1 million tourists from Xishuangbanna, China, have traveled to Boten port, and onto historical attractions in the Golden Triangle, Laos and other ASEAN countries.
The city will soon enter the ASEAN tourism programme, and will develop a wide tourism market together with ASEAN and the world. A residential district, international school, hospital and a hotel in the city are also part of the scheme.

นอกจากโครงการศูนย์สินค้า Xang Square Tourist Complex แล้ว กลุ่มทุนจากสิงคโปร์ก็ได้เริ่มงานหน้าดิน เตรียมการก่อสร้างศูนย์การค้าที่ทันสมัยในอาณาบริเวณ ตลาดเช้า ซึ่งจะใช้เวลาก่อสร้างราว 5 ปี โดยมีพิธีวางศิลาฤกษ์ในเดือน ก.พ. ที่ผ่านมา

นายลอว์เรนซ์ เลียว (Dr Lawrence Leow) ซีอีโอของเอ๊กซ์คาลิเบอร์กรู๊ป (Excalibur Group) จากสิงคโป ซึ่งดูแลการก่อสร้างโครงการนี้ กล่าวว่าเมื่อการก่อสร้างแล้วเสร็จตลาดเช้าก็จะถูกแทนที่ด้วยอาคารทันสมัย เป็นห้างสรรพสินค้าที่มีบริการอย่างครบวงจร และประกอบด้วยร้านค้าและสถานบริการย่อยๆ จำนวนมากมาย ซึ่งเขาเชื่อว่าจะเป็นความภูมิใจของชาวเวียงจันทน์

งานแรกจะเป็นการก่อสร้างอาคารจอดรถขึ้นในพื้นที่ว่างทางด้านตะวันตกของอาณาบริเวณตลาดเช้า เป็นอาคารสูง 5 ชั้น ความยาว 120 เมตร กว้าง 25 เมตร มีเนื้อที่พอที่จะรองรับรถยนต์ได้ถึง 400 คัน มีร้านรวงรวมอยู่ด้วยจำนวนหนึ่ง จะใช้เวลาก่อสร้างประมาณ 9 เดือน

กำลังจะมีการโยกย้ายร้ายค้าต่างๆ ในบริเวณตลาดเช้าออกไปยังทำเลแห่งใหม่ชั่วขณะ หลังการก่อสร้างเสร็จแล้วร้านค้าต่างๆ ก็จะสามารถย้ายกลับเข้าไปประกอบการได้เหมือนเดิม ส่วนขั้นตอนต่อไปจะเป็นการก่อสร้างเพื่อขยายห้างสรรพสินค้า จากอาคารหลังเดิมทุกวันนี้ โดยจะใช้เวลาประมาณ 1 ปี

ในขั้นตอนสุดท้ายของการก่อสร้างนั้น บริษัทจะเปลี่ยนอาณาบริเวณด้านหน้าของตลาดเช้าที่ใช้เป็นลานจอดรถในปัจจุบันให้เป็นเขตสวนสาธารณะที่สวยงาม มีลานน้ำพุ ผู้คนสามารถนั่งพักผ่อนได้ การก่อสร้างในส่วนนี้จะใช้เวลาอีก 3 เดือน

ส่วนห้างสรรพสินค้าของรัฐที่ดำเนินการอยู่ในตลาดเช้าในขณะนี้จะไม่หายไปไหน ข้างๆ กันก็จะมีอาคารห้างสรรพสินค้าหลังใหม่ ซึ่งจะเปิดให้บริการไปจนถึงเวลา 4 ทุ่มทุกวัน

กลุ่มเอ๊กซ์คาลิเบอร์คาดว่าการก่อสร้างทั้งหมดจะแล้วเสร็จทั้งหมดในปี 2552 รวมมูลค่าการก่อสร้างทั้งสิ้น 27 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ gมื่อทั้งหมดแล้วเสร็จตลาดเช้าเวียงจันทน์ก็จะดูคึกคัก ได้รับความสนใจจากบรรดานักท่องเที่ยวมากขึ้น

อย่างไรก็ตามเจ้าหน้าที่ของลาวกล่าวว่า บางส่วนของโครงการจะเปิดใช้การก่อนหน้าที่การก่อสร้างทั้งหมดจะแล้วเสร็จ.

เวียงจันทน์- ทางการลาวปรับปรุงเมืองหลวงครั้งใหญ่ เพื่อต้อนรับแขกบ้านแขกเมืองที่จะมาร่วมการประชุมระดับรัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศอาเซียนครั้งที่ 38 ในนครหลวงเวียงจันทน์ปลายเดือนนี้ ตั้งแต่การปรับสาธารณูปโภคพื้นฐาน สถานที่ท่องเที่ยว เพิ่มเที่ยวบิน จนไปถึงเชื้อเชิญให้คนลาวเป็นเจ้าบ้านที่ดีเพื่อต้อนรับผู้เข้าร่วมการประชุม

นายคำหลวด สิลากอน (Khamlouat Sidlakone) รัฐมนตรีช่วยว่าการกระทรวงการคมนาคม ขนส่ง ไปรษณีย์และก่อสร้างกล่าวว่า รัฐบาลได้เจรจากับสายการบินของไทยและเวียดนามให้เพิ่มเที่ยวบินที่มายังเวียงจันทน์ในช่วงการประชุมระดับรัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศของสมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (อาเซียน) หรือเอเอ็มเอ็มครั้งที่ 38

ในการประชุมครั้งนี้จะมีผู้แทนจากสมาชิกอาเซียน 10 ประเทศและประเทศคู่เจรจาอีกจำนวนมาก ทำให้ทางรัฐบาลต้องการเพิ่มเที่ยวบินเพื่อรองรับผู้ที่จะเดินทางมาร่วมประชุม ซึ่งคาดว่าน่าจะเท่ากับผู้เข้าร่วมการประชุมระดับผู้นำอาเซียนครั้งที่ 10 ที่จัดในกรุงเวียงจันทน์เมื่อปีที่แล้ว

ในปัจจุบันสายการบินลาว แอร์ไลนส์บินตรงจากกรุงเวียงจันทน์ถึงกรุงเทพฯ วันละ 1 เที่ยว บินสู่กรุงฮานอย เวียดนามสัปดาห์ละ 3 เที่ยวบิน เดินทางไปสู่เสียมราฐที่ตั้งของนครวัด 2 เที่ยวต่อสัปดาห์ และบินตรงสู่เชียงใหม่ 3 เที่ยวต่อสัปดาห์

ด้านนายระดา สุนทอน ผู้จัดการฝ่ายการตลาดของสายการบินลาว กล่าวว่า สายการบินไม่สามารถเพิ่มจำนวนเที่ยวบินได้อีกในช่วงการประชุม แต่ยืนยันว่าจะดูแลด้านความปลอดภัยในการเดินทางเป็นอย่างดี ทั้งนี้เป็นรายงานของ "เวียงจันทน์ไทมส์"

การประชุมดังกล่าวจะมีผู้แทนจาก 24 ประเทศเข้าร่วม บางประเทศอาจจะเดินทางโดยเครื่องบินเช่าเหมาลำ และในเบื้องต้นประเทศสหรัฐฯ ได้แจ้งว่าจะใช้เครื่องบินโบอิ้ง 767 นำคณะมาร่วมประชุม ซึ่งท่าอากาศยานนานาชาติวัดไตสามารถรองรับเครื่องบินโดยสารขนาดใหญ่ได้ และเคยรับเครื่องบินโบอิ้ง 747 ระหว่างการประชุมผู้นำอาเซียนเมื่อปลายปีที่แล้ว

ทางการลาวยังได้ปรับปรุงสนามบินนานาชาติวัดไตเพิ่มเติม โดยได้รับเงินช่วยเหลือจากรัฐบาลไทย ขณะนี้อยู่ในขั้นที่ 2 ซึ่งมีการขยายขนาดของทางวิ่งและเพิ่มบริเวณจอดเครื่องบิน ทั้งนี้ในขั้นแรกของการปรับปรุงได้เสร็จสมบูรณ์แล้ว โดยทำให้ทางวิ่งรองรับเครื่องบินขนาดใหญ่ได้

ส่วนการปรับปรุงในขั้นที่ 2 ตอนนี้ดำเนินการไปประมาณ 60% แล้ว และคาดว่าจะเสร็จสมบูรณ์ในสิ้นปีนี้ ทั้งนี้นายคำหลวดกล่าวว่าการปรับปรุงสนามบินจะยุติเป็นการชั่วคราวในสัปดาห์หน้าเพื่อเตรียมการสำหรับการประชุมรัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศอาเซียน

ขณะเดียวกันนายอุดอน วัดทะนะไว เจ้าหน้าที่กำแพงนครเวียงจันทน์กล่าวว่า ทางการยังได้ปรับปรุงบริเวณโดยรอบจัตตุรัสธาตุหลวง ซึ่งคาดว่าจะแล้วเสร็จ 15 วันก่อนพิธีเปิดการประชุมเอเอ็มเอ็ม ทางการได้ปรับปรุงทางเดินเท้ามาตั้งแต่วันที่ 11 มิ.ย.

นอกจากนี้รัฐมนตรีช่วยว่าการกระทรวงสื่อสารฯ ยังกล่าวอีกว่าได้ติดต่อกับบรรดาบริษัทรับเหมาก่อสร้างทั้งหลายที่กำลังก่อสร้างถนนอยู่ในกรุงเวียงจันทน์ ให้ย้ายอุปกรณ์ที่กีดขวางเส้นทางการจราจรอยู่ในขณะนี้ออกไป

ทางการไม่อนุญาตให้ผู้รับเหมานำเศษไม้ กองทราย หรือหินดินต่างๆ ที่ใช้ในการก่อสร้างมาวางไว้ข้างถนน เนื่องจากเกรงว่าจะทำให้การจราจรติดขัดช่วงที่มีการประชุมได้ นอกจากนี้ยังเร่งให้ผู้รับเหมาเร่งสร้างถนนบางส่วนที่ยังค้างอยู่ให้แล้วเสร็จ ขณะที่ส่วนที่คาดว่าจะราดยางแอสฟัลต์ไม่ทันก็ให้ใช้หินกรวดโรยก่อน

นายคำหลวดกล่าวว่าระบบไฟฟ้าและน้ำประปาในกรุงเวียงจันทน์ก็ได้รับการตรวจสอบและปรับปรุงเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการประชุมครั้งนี้เช่นกัน และยังได้ซ่อมแซมระบบสาธารณูปโภคต่างๆ ในสถานที่ประชุมเรียบร้อยแล้ว

การประชุมระดับรัฐมนตรีอาเซียนในครั้งนี้จะใช้สถานที่หลักในการประชุม 2 แห่ง คือที่ศูนย์แสดงสินค้าและนิทรรศการนานาชาติ หรือ "ศูนย์ลาวไอเท็ค" กับ โรงแรมดอนจัน พาเลซ โดยนายคำหลวดกล่าวว่าสถานที่ทั้ง 2 แห่งพร้อมแล้ว

กระทรวงการต่างประเทศของลาวแถลงก่อนหน้านี้ว่าจะผู้สื่อข่าวหลายร้อยคนไปทำข่าวในลาวระหว่างการประชุมรัฐมตรีต่างประทศอาเซียน นักข่าวจากญี่ปุ่นเพียงประเทศเดียวถึง 500 คน ได้จองห้องพักเรียบร้อยแล้ว

นายคำหลวดกล่าวว่า การเตรียมการดังกล่าวเริ่มมาตั้งแต่เมื่อเดือน มี.ค. ซึ่งในขณะนี้มีเจ้าหน้าที่ราว 400 คน แบ่งออกเป็น 20 ฝ่าย ทำงานกัน 24 ชั่วโมงเพื่อให้งานเสร็จทันเวลา ซึ่งในปัจจุบันเหลืองานด้านการประดับประดากรุงเวียงจันทน์เพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น ซึ่งคาดว่าจะเริ่มในสัปดาห์หน้า และแม้จะมีความยากลำบากเนื่องจากอยู่ในฤดูฝน แต่งานซ่อมแซมและปรับปรุงต่างๆ จะเสร็จทันเวลาแน่นอน

Vientiane has been announced as the host of the 2009 Southeast Asian Games. No stadiums or city development plans have been confirmed, but the 18,000-seat National Stadium may host football (soccer) matches.

And did I forget to mention the new 20,000-seat stadium is being constructed? Also, because of the limited sports facilities in Vientiane, only 25 sports will be in competition, compared to 43 in the last games at Nakhon Ratchasima. New sports centres in Luang Prabang, Sawannaket, and Champassak are expected to be built for the Games. For more information go to these webpages:
