Koniaczeq May 9th, 2005, 02:11 AM Whole old town of Zamosc is on that list. Zamosc is called perfect rennaisance town.
Van der Rohe May 9th, 2005, 04:08 PM http://www.zamoyski.com/jan-zamoyski.jpg
One of most powerful polish nobles - Jan Zamoyski has founded this town in 1580. He has hired an italian architect Bernardo Morando to design "a perfect city" and built it between 1580-1590.
It was a very multicultural town - many nations settled there, each of them had their own temple (apart from catholic and protestant churches, there was an armenian church, a synagogue and a greek orthodox church). The chronicle mentions in 1591 among the inhabitants apart from poles and ruthenians (rusyns) such nations as armenians, greeks, germans, hungarians, italians, jews, and scots!!!

JohnnyMass August 16th, 2005, 04:07 PM It's in fact a fantastic sight!!! wasn't it destroyed during WWII?
Jacek August 16th, 2005, 04:18 PM From history of Zamosc
"The Germans declared the area to be the "First Resettlement Area" of the General Gouvernement in November, 1942, which resulted in the "ethnic cleansing" of hundreds of villages in the region, to make room for German nationals. Tens of thousands of Poles were deported to labor or extermination camps, or killed outright, while others were singled out to be "Germanized" and resettled in the Reich."
"JOHN DAMSKI: Himmler once visited Zamosc, and finding that it was a lovely town--built on the model of Padua, Italy--he had the idea to turn it into a German city, called Himmlerstadt. However, if it was to be a German city he would need to get rid of all the Poles living there. To accomplish this he sent out a special commission to examine the population to decide who was German. Those with blue eyes--to the right; the others--out. I wasn't in front of that commission because I had left Zamosc by that time, but my brother Zygmunt, who was blond with blue eyes, was living there. The Germans measured his hands, and the length of his fingers--and these were supposedly educated people. "
So to answer your question town's human potential was decimated but most of Zamosc was spared.
JohnnyMass August 16th, 2005, 04:40 PM right...emptied of its original population one can say it was PHISICALLY spared...
Himmlerstadt??? OMG...no comments.

Urbanista1 September 5th, 2012, 02:06 AM someone should get pics of restored cathedral and renaissance city walls and gates.
Slartibartfas September 5th, 2012, 11:45 PM Yup. On the Polish pages, there are some great pictures of the huge current construction efforts, rebuilding large parts of the fortifications, turning some minor squares from parking lots back into nice urban spaces, ...
This beatuiful town has some great touristic potential.

Index_LT September 16th, 2012, 06:14 PM Actually, Zamosc looks just like a colonial city somewhere in Latin America. :) Maybe tha's because of colourful renaissance and baroque buildings, and squared squares.

I don't think it suffered much damage. I believe it was used as a base by the Nazis, and I think Himmler wanted the town re-named and much of its renaissance architecture to be demolished, building more "German" architecture in its place. Good thing the plan never came to fruition before the war ended.

Btw, the church looked even better in the 18th century (see below). It was considered the largest Baroque church in this part of Poland.

Like most of Polish cities, Zamosc lost its importance and former beauty during the partitions of Poland.
Rombi March 4th, 2013, 03:47 PM Like most of Polish cities, Zamosc lost its importance and former beauty during the partitions of Poland.
Mainly under russian partitions because german and austrian were relatively good for economic growth.
RS_UK-PL March 4th, 2013, 05:52 PM Austrian Partition (Galicia)
"Economically, Galicia was rather backward, and universally regarded as the poorest of the three partitions. There was much corruption during the elections, and the region was seen by the Viennese government as the low priority for investment and development. It was a vast, but constantly struggling region with inefficient agriculture and little industry. In 1900, 60% of the village population (age 12 and over) couldn't read or write. Education was obligatory till the age of 12, but this requirement was often ignored. Between the years 1850 and 1914 it is estimated that about 1 million people from Galicia (mostly Poles) emigrated to United States. Galician poverty to this day has survived in Polish language as an expression (adage: bieda galicyjska or nędza galicyjska)."

Of course, Zamosc was in Congress Poland, which was slightly more developed than Galicia.

It's well known among Polish tourists but not so much outsiders.
In south eastern Poland I would say Lublin gets the most attention. Not heavily damaged in the war.
