Corinth Tower to be blown up at 11am on Sunday 15th May.
Here is a picture i took today showning the tower being prepared for destruction showing the bands of explosives wrapped in black plastic.
Don't know what condition/quality the building is, could a makeover have been carried out.

Smashing pic Juxt. Sebo was with me on wednesday when the demo lads from the Corinth gave me the date. Going to miss this place, despite it's appearance. It's in so many pics I've taken over the years. It'll feel strange when it's gone (sniff! sniff!). Most of the people were moved out over a year ago and now live about 50 yards from it in the (V)ictoria Settlement (see below)
There appeared no chance of saving it though. I tried to get Brian Brennan (Build Direct) and George Kountis (Eldon Grove) to consider taking it over last year. Brian didn't want to know because it would cost too much to refurbish. He also suspected it was structually unsound.
Can't recall George's response, apart from it being in the negatoryhttp://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/traurig/sad-smiley-019.gif

Certainly am Gareth. Thankfully St George's Church is still available nearby.
I wonder if anybody took the pics down from the Corinth ground floor wall or will they go to waste?

Juxt, I was reliably informed (Sebo FFS!) that this pile of wank was going to be history a couple of weeks ago. It f*****g irks me whenever I take pics of the waterfront and I'm confronted with this piece of shite :bash:

Tony Sebo May 10th, 2005, 11:41 PM Thanks for the votes...didn't win though!
Sadly the pic of Dave didn't come out...rest of pics great...as are daves legs, but the sign washed out.
Talking of mayors, metro focus', Bay Areas etc, have been hearing some interesting rumbles from 'darn sarf' about possible new directions with this new dedicated department for local/community affairs. Governence has been taken away from Prescotts monolith...can't say for sure though as they're all lying bastards who love the rumourmill!
Keep your ears open though.
liverpolitan May 10th, 2005, 11:48 PM Tony it's all still in the same Dept, except it now has two cabinet ministers. The whole city region policy area seems to be in need of a champion, ministerially, and currently I am not aware of one.
Awayo May 10th, 2005, 11:55 PM Yep, Prezza wouldn't allow his empire to be carved up, with Blunkett getting the local government bit. He put his foot down and stayed one dept as Poli says.

woodhousen May 15th, 2005, 09:50 PM its a shame that they didnt make a thing of it.
i know of john hunt after working in the industry for a year and i have to admit that he is a total whimp when it comes to blow downs. many companies, when they get the chance, blow the buildings up in a nice delayed way so you can watch the thing come down slowly. ofcourse when there are buildings 10ft away all around you cant always do it, but in a situation like this one whre there is a park right around it, they could have demolished it in a more staged way lol
i heard that his company suffered a few hold ups (a thing that happens when al the charges are detonated but the building doesnt collapse) and so when ever he does a blow down, he packs the things full of explosives in order to get it down as soon as possible. shame really....this one could have looked great.
now this is how u do it lol, this is a pic of the company i used to work for....they always make a spectical of their blow downs

JUXTAPOL May 21st, 2005, 04:42 PM The joke is that the former T&GWU building next door, crafted to be 'in keeping' in the same way as CP, is soon to be pulled down at huge public expense, such is the power of the aesthetes. Let's hope the bulldozers get the wrong one hey?!
Can't remember if i or someone else posted this info from Downtown website here (http://www.downtownliverpool.org/), but mentions soon to be demolished TGWU building. :carrot: :cucumber:
I really dislike this building :bash:
P.S. As for Commutation Plaza, i actually like C.P.
PP.S What's accy doing in this thread, is it due for demolition..! :)
Paul D May 21st, 2005, 04:57 PM That's fantastic news I don't think we knew that?
I would demolish it and not build on the vacant site as it would open up brilliant views of the beautiful William Brown Street from Islington.
liverpolitan May 21st, 2005, 08:16 PM People who aren't yet able or ready to appreciate the TGWU building probably hate the RSA building. I love both. Why demolish it? I do think there is a kind of 70s hatred going on here (I don't know when either was completed, but their inspiration is entirely 70s). That will pass in a decade. It's just like good 20s and 30s buildings that were lost in the 60s and 70s, no-one could see the value of them, and gems were lost. It takes time to appreciate what is good in certain decades. The TGWU building is splendid, and very sensitive to its location. The smart-arse comments on the Downtown site about it being "in keeping" are simply naive. I do worry about the types of comments being made about very good architecture, by people who seem to welcome off-the-shelf catalogue vernacular as long as its tall and new.
bibster February 17th, 2007, 02:13 AM Nooooo, not another piece of brutalist architecture just about to be wiped away as if it never existed. why do we have to erase these brave buildings. They only get to look shabby because people drop them like a hot potato when something 'better' comes along.
There really ought to be a bigger noise made when someone tries to erase a historic building. Soon there will be a big chunk missing from the modernist era but hey, those indentikit offices will do just fine until someone gets it in for them.
I'd love to buy the TGWU building on islington Liverpool and open it as a museum for modernism. Can't the city council do something, even just for 2008? Kind of like the Germans did with Palast der Republik in Berlin when it became 'Volkspalast', although it'd be on a smaller scale. PdR is also set to fall. Lets carry on wiping out the bits that don't please Mr & Mrs Average and see what we'll be left with.

I must admit, the TGWU building doesn't look to bad at all, I think due to it's location and surrounding architecture, we are unfairly comparing it to classical architecture. The building is trying to fit in with it's surroundings, same colour, height massing, whilts being very different. Something totally different to it's surroundings would fit in better on this site, and the TGWU building would survive if built in a different location.
The other problem is this building is isolated on its own, on a traffic island. If that part of the city had developed around it, the building may not be at risk now.

Is it early 70s? I wonder if there is a 70s Society that could campaign to get it. Liverpool got so little of note during that decade, it's a shame to lose a genuinely good example. I can imagine in 30 years this being regarded as a really sad loss - the way we sometimes now look at good art deco buildings that were removed in the 70s and wish they had not been. It's been discussed here before I know, but I think some of us older members appreciate it simply because it was a modern office building containing proper regional headquarters functions at a time when such things were in massive decline in the city. I wonder what the square footage is, and how many people could work in there? Might it be big enough for a few hundred BBC employees, eg in their research department?
Awayo February 17th, 2007, 04:51 PM What's happened to the TGWU's Liverpool base. Has it been "regionalised", ie, Manchesterised?

Awayo February 17th, 2007, 09:46 PM When I was Croatia, an enormous and frankly terrifying taxi driver who looked like he'd been biting the heads of babies as part of his Ustashe duties ten years previously told me that he and all of his mates are Milan or Juventus fans.
I told him that the Liverpool fans were fond of Biscan. He liked that, although his command that I "better use [him] for taxi all the time you're here, right?" nevertheless unnerved me slightly.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I guess that small countries with crap leagues will follow the glamour outfits in the countries near to them.
the golden vision February 17th, 2007, 11:23 PM What's happened to the TGWU's Liverpool base. Has it been "regionalised", ie, Manchesterised?
Correct Awayo.
T0M February 19th, 2007, 05:15 PM My problem with the TGU building is that it sits in a prime location at the corner of a major thoroughfare through the city... and is this really what we want thousands of people to see as they pass the back of Liverpool every day?
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/1245/imgp3405zr1.jpg
Of course it all depends on what they intend to replace it with, but imagine a decent 12-15 storey building here, or even better a 20 storey building to compliment Lime St Gateway!
Even if this place was done up, it's never going to justify sitting in that prime location.. esspecially now that it's redundant..

Martin S February 20th, 2007, 05:18 PM Tom,
It is an odd location for an office building. Makes you wonder how many trade unionists would have been run over trying to get to it over the years. If it were pulled down, there would be an opportunity to simplify the road layout and, maybe allow the construction of a ground level road to replace the southern tunnel flyover and give the Museums and Art Galleries a rear facade.
All the same, as a building I think that, though it obviously needs some restoration, it is an attractive example of its style.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't see a new building simply built on the current site
Apartments or grade-A office space overlooking the Walker gallery, Museum, St.Georges Hall etc would go for a pretty penny I reckon.

The former "Fortress Liverpool", aka "the Kremlin", is an fine building.
Just another one of them seeing who really knows Liverpool.
And this is baffling. The building to which you refer isn't in Liverpool, the former TGWU office is.
As for not knowing what was once on that site, whilst there is nothing wrong with your being older than many of us on this site, nor is there in our comparative youth.

Is it invisible? How does it and its replacement share the same site? Everettian parallel dimensions? Subtly, as a metaphor: "It's still there in my heart", as it were?

Nope..still there at 3.45 pm..Now it might be Invisible if it has been knocked down in the last 45 minutes.

Awayo December 11th, 2007, 06:37 PM Right, you aren't asking a question about the previous building on that site but rather its current occupant? Okay. Answer: it is the former TGWU building.

Awayo December 11th, 2007, 06:51 PM Eh? Like others, I thought straight away that you are talking about an older building previously on this site. You, for reasons I invite you to explain, nevertheless stated that the subject of your question was still standing, "when I walked past it this avvie" and furthermore was, "still there at 3.45 pm." (!)
I do admit to increasingly bafflement.

Awayo December 11th, 2007, 09:38 PM Gaumont cinema was on Camden St, t'other side of Islington.
And world famous? The Shakespeare cannot have claimed this, Sam Wanamaker's tenure there notwithstanding. And wasn't it too on the other side of the road, roundabout where the car park at the back of the newish Commutation Row flats are?
Ged December 11th, 2007, 09:48 PM Does it begin with a G, G?:)
Yes adman, the surname begins with G..:applause:
When I say world famous I mean that the famous people who used the chippie went away to America or where ever and had nothing but great things to say about the place.
I dont mean its famous like Buckingham palace or anything like that.
Ged December 11th, 2007, 09:53 PM Was it the Shakespeare Theatre?
No v4..the Shakey was on Fraser St..
The chippie was on Christian St,which is still there but much shorter,The TGWU is not on Christian St.The original Transport house was though, almost opposite the TGWU building in the photos..Transport house was opposite Hymans which was on the corner of Camden St/Islington.
(Almost half of Christian St dissapeared when the New Islington,TGWU were being developed)

Tony,The building on the right nearest the parked cars was the Chipshop that began with the letter G,It was on the corner of Islington place and Christian St..that part of Christian St has now all gone and the TGWU building now stands there.
Camden St and the Gaumont picture house can be seen in the distance past what was Transport house on the left.
Hunter St on your map is the Street to the right of this 1st photo.
The building on the Immediate left was St Anne's school.
This 1st photograph was taken in 1966 by Harry Ainscough.

Babaloo October 11th, 2008, 03:02 PM That must have just happened :bash:
The developers of the flats opposite (former Wellington Rd School) were probably complaining that it was putting people off buying/renting!
It was always difficult to see a way back for this one. Let's hope the Florrie doesn't go the same way. For a building that is supposed to be 'saved' and 'about to be rennovated' little seems to be happening.
