I'm in a similar situation to you; so here's what I know: In the UK there are two ways (as far as I know) you can become an Architectural Technologists to become a full member of the British Institute of Architectural Technologists (BIAT). So the first route is to go to university to study the BSc in Architectural Technology (ArchT) degree. The second way coming from experience within the field as an Architectural Technician and attending Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars: and then you apply when you are fully competent by filling in a big block of documents to see if you are eligible for membership to BIAT. Hope this helps and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

You might want to check out the website of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (http://www.raic.org/) or even the Ordre des Architectes du Quebec (http://www.oaq.com) or give them a ring to see what requires to be an official architect.

You can't become an architect without studying "architecture" at university.

You can be working 20 years in an office, have more knowledge and experience than an architect, but you haven't studied architecture.

Be carefull, maybe that person was telling you "british or europeen" architetural technology which is a university career and has nothing to do with "canadian" architectural technology (which is a pre-university or college level career)

Your (Canadian) Architectural Technology must then be what we call Architectural Technicians here in the UK: this requires to study a Higher National Diploma/Certificate in Construction at college (2 years course). In the UK, Architectural Technology is a University level degree course in its own right (accredited by BIAT); which is different to that of Architecture (accredited by RIBA).
