I don't live in Saigon, but the last time I was there these are the projects that are up and running. Information for anyone who's not in Saigon, and if you're in Saigon correct me.

Nguyen Hue street.
-15 storeys addition to the Saigon tresor = broken ground (detroyed haft of the French building ..pity)
-43 storeys Larkhall Savico = site clearance 100%
-Rex expanding = site clearance 100%

Dong Khoi.
-a 10-12 storeys art-deco building right next to the Metroplitan = site clearance 100%.
-Hyatt hotel behind the opera completed 90-95%

Le Duan
- 20 storeys building faces the zoo = construction continue again.
-7-8 storey art-deco building (quite nice) between the VietPetro and Hotel Sotifel = under construction and up the first floor (should be completed by now)

Ham nghi.
-20 storeys white glass structure beside the Vietcom bank building = site clearance 50% (but not sure what happened now)
-across the street, another site clearance started (don't know what they're building)
- "cot co thu ngu" square = site clearance 100% ( the spaceship restaurant was gone)
-site clearance besides the Saigon old raiway office. (I think they built that long yellow building)

Pasteur.
-22 storeys pasteur court = under construction on the 2nd floor (should be working on 12-14 floor by now)

Ben Chuong Duong
- 20 storeys Central Garden apartment = site clearance 100%
-a building next to the HongKong Shanghai bank = under construction (don't know what they're building)

Nguyen Van Cu
- 2 buildings , 10 storeys each..... belong to the Saigon Natural science university and teacher's college = completed (nice art-deco buildings, but should clear away the small shops blocking the entrances of both buildings)
-"Saigon Happy square" with 12 or 14 apartments and offices complex.... ranging from 15-25 storeys remains vacant and unhappy

Nhieu loc canal
-3, 18 storeys apartment blocks -1 finshed (very nice creamy building, stood center of the new truong DInh street .....when you drove to the end of the street that was when you realized the building is on the other side of the canal....a very mysterious building)

Tran Hung Dao
-15 storeys apartment across from Metropole hotel = under construction. (should be completed now)
-tripple 20 storeys (?) apartments near Cholon = should be completed now.

Hung Vuong
-29 storeys Hung Vuong plaza - broken ground ...a huge project - ugly HongKong architecture.
-across the street from Hung Vuong plaza a big and sexy sexy blue glass structure 20-30 storeys (?) ( for the Saigon's medical university I think) = site clearance 100%, but now a parking lot, don't know what now?
-The new Hung Vuong hospital complete 2002-2003 looking pretty neat with an open court yard inside the building, great view of the ChoLon district from the top floors.
I think there will be phrase 2 building for the back of the hospital.

Nguyen Du
- a big 7 storeys classy white French Mediterranean apartments building with red roofs (many roofs) and enclosed French style gate at the corner of Nguyen Du -Truong DInh completed
(I think they should put this building at the Eden block in front of the city hall)

Nguyen Tri Phuong
-a big site clearance (about haft the city's block) near the Nguyen Tri phuong hospital, I think it's the nguyen tri phuong's hospital expansion?

- outside the airport, reaching the park, there's a big building under contruction, the landscape surrounding that building is vast, you can build another park there.

-On Tran Binh Trong street if I remember correctly, near the French built Cho Quan catholic church is another building, not high just only around 10 storeys but very wide and big underconstruct

I'm sorry bang for promising u about these renderings....i was too busy with exams, every kind of them.Hope i can handle it at the end of this week bro.

It's sad that they have demolished some parts of the Supreme Court,if u hav a look inside it,very big,well-decorated hall....now has been split in half.

More projects .........Does anyone know about them?

district 4
-2 city's blocks = site clearance completed 100%
1 block located in front of Xom Chieu market.
the other block is around that, fairly close, but separated by 1-2 city blocks.
I don't think these are the "Khanh Hoi plaza" because the layout of Khanh Hoi's is regtangular.......while the other two blocks are crooked square and pentagon shapes.

District 5
Around Hung Vuong Plaza 29 storeys, there's another city's block underconstruction........the block is not big as HUng Vuong Plaza, but still pretty big....about the size of LarkHall Savico 43 storeys on Nguyen Hue street.
this project's surrounded by 4 small streets, so I don't quite remember the street names......but I'm sure it's tucked behind or somewhere near the Hung Vuong Plaza. yep it's underconstruction....I saw workers and cranes operating.

Tan Binh district
-Cach mang thang 8 street, across Le Thi Rieng park, there's another site clearance completed.
- end of Truong Son street near the airport, turn right passing many expensive newly built French Villas (this part of town looks like Hanoi), there's a big site besides the american abandon army church = clearance completed 100%..... it's 3 or 5 (?) 15 - 18 storeys apartment buildings.

GoVap district
-in the vast compound of the former millitary hospital (the area is about the size of Saigon's zoo) on Nguyen Kiem street..... I saw them started to divide the area into smaller portion....and demolished a lot of things inside....not sure what they were doing

Ps. Please give me the infos if anyone know about the projects I mentioned above. Thankx!

Any time saigon monsoon.
But what you mean the "supreme court" demolished? are you serious?
I think you're mistaking....the building they demolished 50% was the French building on Nguyen Hue street..............Saigon suppreme court is on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street, beside the reunification palace.
man if they demolished the court I'll write mails complaint to all the Vietnamese news paper in town.

photo of Govap's University from air.....last time I saw them they were all white, now the four buildings are white, blue, and two red. (Big buildings in the foreground)

Yeah that old French tresor building on Nguyen Hue street.......when they started the demolishtion, I did walked inside the building.......kind of surprise how small it looks outside, but the inside looks big, the French hall with those big pillars and the plaster art work in there are more beautiful than the postoffice. felt like Roman's bath (if they dig a hole in the ground and build a swimming pool there)
the secondtime I came, they demolished all but the front facade, so the hall was gone, and they didn't let me in the building the second time, had to stand outside

Is there any info on the web about the Nhieu Loc canal apartments? Like an address... ?

The demolition on Nguyen Hue: info is here:

http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=232189

They will keep the hall, it seems. I saw it a couple of months ago and even went inside, but the light was wrong so my pics didn't come out well.

You are life saver.
thank you soooooo much!
Thought I'll never see that interior again.
Yeah they will keep the front , but I saw the building when it was still intact, the main hall extended all the way to the back like the post office........if you count the side windows, there used to be 5 and a haft (haft side window at the end of the building) now only three windows left.
if they join it with the finnacial center, they don't have to demolish anything.......and width of the finnacial will be wider too......so sad

Don't be such a pessimist. I think Saigon is doing all right. That new building opposite the Caravelle will be very tasteful, and most things are being preserved. The treasury would have been long gone in any other country.

Look at this building demolished in Chicago two years ago. Now there is a surface parking lot there, and some day a stupid office box... They never learn.

Im just curious does anyone know why most of the French colonial are painted in bright yellow color? Is is the original color?

coolink
May 17th, 2005, 05:59 PM
looks like I blab the most here so I'll take that
many reasons:

-Yellow colour because it was the Vietnamese imperial colour
-only yellow colour can stand the tough polution and dust in Vietnam....white buildings like the Majestic hotel will need painting more often.
-perhaps it is the least expensive colour?
-Buildings in Vietnam aren't excessive in detail decoration like gothic, baroque, renaissance, neo-classical architectures in Europe.......so the combination of yellow and white touch-up will bring out more architectural features?

But I think most of the orginal buildings in Vietnam used to be white during the French era, because with the hot climate I think the French would have prefered white instead of yellow......and it's fashionable too, most of the clothes the French wore in the past by men and women are white..........I know this because I observed mah grandpa and he was brought up in a french school, all his clothes are white

I open multiples windows so I answered your questions in the wrong box here (take a look at the one in phu my hung)

but what building opposite the Caravelle are you talking about? the park Hyatt hotel next to the continental hotel? I saw that building ...it's not ugly, but not nice either......just boring

Jaroslaw
May 17th, 2005, 06:29 PM
I also would have given the same practical answers, that yellow is cheaper and lasts longer in the hot climate. I'll ask around. A lot of the old postcards seem to show white buildings... but they're black and white postcards!

@bang, the building I am talking about is where they demolished an older (boring) three-story building a couple of months ago, on the corner of Dong Khoi opposite the Caravelle. A nice 7-story building will go up there. I neglected to take a photo of the rendering on site and now it's gone, I think.

The Hyatt seems ok, but the lobby seems small (cheap Americans! --although the money seems to come from Malaysia...) and what's up with the blank wall looming over the Continental? Dumb.

DING! That's the building. However, it was modified and "uglified" in the 1950s, it's not a great loss. Keeping my fingers crossed for those apartment buildings across the street in this photo...

The building had a Viet propaganda poster shop, which didn't see a lot of traffic. Also a souvenir store where supposedly Hillary Clinton bought something, woo hoo.

I'm not going to click on this old photo link right now, it'll wait until evening because I know I'd burn a couple of hours right quick!!!

are you serious? they destroyed just that building or all half of that block facing dong khoi street? I don't miss that building but kind of surprise how quick the building came down.
I was praying they would do that....it came true

Don't like Saigon pearl designs myself, but I don't mind them....I care only the architectural code in district 1...if I were the emperor of Saigon I would order these buildings: Caravelle, Sheraton, Duxton, Rennaisance, Legend hotels, Saigon centre, harbourview tower to fix up their exteriors.........outside district 1 build anything they want, go nut

the building across the street I think it will come down for sure....just don't know when......because the fire safety code is very old, and the number of tenants living there are double or triple the numbers when it was first designed for

man this Rex building is slow, I thought they should be Broken ground and busy with building the ground floor by now.
But I can see that they destroyed the chinese pavillion on the roof.....Don't know why right beside the french city hall yet they added a chinese temple roof to the entrance and a chinese pavillion on the roof.
so moonsoon is Rex still operating or they close down the whole hotel for building and renovation?

I love the Rex Hotel......on my last trip to HCMC I slept in that hotel.........it had one of the most beautiful lobby I´ve ever seen.

Jaroslaw

The old Rex is still working. This will be an addition...

Strange, I am sure that in April I saw drilling rigs on the site, heavy machinery, yet there is no sign of this in these photos... Is the date right? The actual demolition took place in December:

The US' Winvestment-LLC Group has received a license to build a US$300 million tourism site in the southern seaside Vung Tau city, a local official said.

The Sai Gon Atlantis Hotel resort will feature a hotel that can accommodate 2,000 guests, according to the project.

Besides, the 300-ha resort will also feature an entertainment park with both land and water games, a sports complex, including a golf course, and exhibition halls, which can welcome some 100,000 visitors a day.

Construction of the project is scheduled to start in the third quarter of this year and be completed in 2009.

$223m building plan in HCMC may go fully foreign-invested

An US$223 million joint-venture plan to build a hotel, trading center and office tower in downtown Ho Chi Minh City will likely become fully-foreign invested following the Vietnamese side’s request.

State-run Saigontourist, a large-scale travel firm in HCMC, the Vietnamese investor, has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and local authorities to allow its foreign partner, Kumbo, a Korean group, to wholly invest in the project.

The project, initiated by Saigontourist and Kumbo, was approved in 1996 but construction work was then suspended following a financial crisis in the Asian region in late 1990s’.

So far, Kumbo has invested $15.2 million into the project in cash, while Saigontourist and another Vietnamese partner have contributed $22 million in real estate properties.

The MPI is gathering opinions over Saigontourist’s request and will submit it to the government for approval.

Chinese real estate group Shenghui is hoping to build a US$300-million shopping mall in Saigon South or District 9, Shenghui president Qiu Ming told HCMC chairman Le Thanh Hai on Monday.
Peter Ty Tran, the group's representative in Vietnam, said Shenghui wanted to retain sole ownership of the project, if it should proceed.
Shenghui representatives will meet with city officials to see whether a plot of 17 to 20 hectares of land in Saigon South is available for the project, Tran added.
Away from shopping cen*ters, Shenghui is in talks with Kidwell about increasing the capacity of the latter's power station in Ba Ria-Vung Tau by ten times.
Qiu Ming also told the HCMC' chairman that he wanted to invest in infrastruc*ture development, and needed to know what projects his company could carry out.

should this be a good or bad thing? the scary thing is they will flood this place with CHinese goods and produces
on the other hand big shopping mall in the suburd will bring more people outside and leave the city center.
and another thing......Saigon south ......they don't think about the people's needs....Vietnamese are religious people, but I don't see any place reserve for building churches or temples.............so people will not want to live in a place where they have to travel a long distant back to the city center to attend whatever it is that they needed to attend to.

Satra to choose foreign investor for int’l trade center

(SGT-HCMC,HANOI) Saigon Trading Group (Satra) will soon select a foreign partner from among a group of candidates to develop a modern international commercial center in the city’s busy business quarter next year, an executive said yesterday.

Satra submitted to the city government a plan for building an international commercial center covering 9,200 square meters in a prime location bordered by Nguyen Hue, Le Loi and Pasteur streets. Under the plan, Satra will select a financially-strong partner for the cost-extensive project.

Tran Van Bac, deputy general director of Satra, told the Daily yesterday that seven foreign companies have shown keen interest in the commercial complex project in the heart of District 1. These include Malaysia’s Shangri-la, Thailand’s Central Pattana, Hong Kong Land, and others from the U.S. and Singapore.

The project, worth an estimated VND1.92 trillion (US$121.5 million) excluding the land value, may house a financial section, a high-tech section, an international exhibition section, and offices for rent.

The architectural plan of the complex, which is adjacent to the Tax Plaza, is likely to be approved by the HCMC Service of Urban Zoning and Architect this week.

HCMC vice chairman Nguyen Huu Tin asked Satra to cooperate with the Service of Planning and Investment and the zoning service to choose a foreign partner with strong financial position and good expertise in management and trading.

“Satra should work with foreign consultants to set out criteria for selecting partners,” Tin said at a meeting yesterday. He also asked Satra and District 1 authorities to come up with a site clearance and compensation plan soon.

Satra, administered by the HCMC government, is a State-owned corporation having under its umbrella 42 member companies, including three joint ventures.

I was ironical about Vn as an atheist state: VN is a socialist country governed by a communist party so... It must be hard to ask a permission to build a worship place. Foreign investors prefer make return on investment and don't want their project delayed because of some touchy religious questions.

If I'm not mistaken, no new pagoda neither church has been built in SGN since 1975.

there are quite a number of new churches and temples in saigon.....I know because I visited many of them, and if you ask people around they will tell you if those are old or new structures.
VN is a commie country but I think it's saigon that people got (a little more power) to do and say what they pleased......and the catholic cardinal got us back many old schools, seminaries, churches and facilities back from the government.
and a small church near my house, guess what? 4 years ago the priest demanded that the government gave us back the school right in the church's ground that they took from the catholic church since 1975.........the government refused........so this was what my family told me.

the priest locked the church....and the congregation came surrounded the church to protect and protest the government, and they rung the bell like crazy and endlessly for 2-3 whole days.....and they said they will bring it to the Vatican..
by the time I came back the government gave the school back to the church. now it's a renovated with glass windows and air conditioning and now strictly use for Sunday school......no commie school.

deal with the commie you have to be loud and mad, just like them....ya know

ps. not all vietnamese have religion.....budhism is the majority, but only made up of 65%, catholism is around 8-10%, 10% are others combined
