Just wondering who you think would win the right to stage the 2012 Olympics, or who you would like to win. Pictures of facilities/ future facilities would also be nice. You could also suggest another city that is not in the running!

I think it'll be between NYC-London-Paris, and from that bunch I think it might lean towards Paris, although I wouldn't mind seeing them in NYC.

NY ain't gonna get it. It's Paris (who I think would be great) or London (also great). Madrid might suprise people by how many first round votes they get, but they aren't going to get it either. Moscow has no chance.

Not in 2012.

The following in my oppionoin is the chance that each country has of winning (not who I think should win)

1. Paris
2. London
3. Moscow, Madrid, NY

Isn't London's bid in trouble. Several articles indicating it in the last month. Lots of allegations and even some revocation of certain aspects of the bid. The last article was in French, and the caption said, London's bid in trouble. Can anyone translate that?

London was offering to pay money towards the cost of athelete's flights and towards the cost of foreign olympic bodies to come to Britain. It was in the orginal bid brochure I believe but the IOC boss was worreid about a bidding war so the UK team withdrew it.

I worse thiong for London may be that some local small businesses that are being asked to relocate (and compensated at the same time of course) have written to the IOC campaigning against it. I don't know what kind of an affect that will have.

I have a feeling it will be Paris.

But I would love to see it in NYC (give me a reason to go there, because by 2012 I'll be doing my last year at uni hopefully)

My guess is New York. American TV rights are still the source of major chunks of Olympic funding, and the ratings for Sydney were a disaster, as will Beijing be (time differences) If it goes to Europe in 2012, that will make for 4 Olympics in a row where North American audiences will miss out on much live coverage.

I think it'll be between Paris and London. The most interesting thing is that these two cities are only about 500 miles apart from each other!(and you can take the eurostar to get to any of them) so I think I'll be good for both cities no matter which one of them wins the bid.

If I am not wrong, Singapore asked to host the IOC meeting session, and was awarded the rights to do so? Not too sure on the details thou. ;)

It's between London and Paris now I think. I'm hoping London gets it as it has IMHO the best bid and deserves it. Moscow has little chance, Madrid wont get the games so soon after Barcelona, New York doesn't seem to be a favourite although it has a chance and London and Paris are the bookies favourites.

Spain and the USA have both had olympic games recently so I don't think it will go to them. I think it's between London and Paris, and as much as I want London to get it, i think paris is going to win it.

I don't think that's the only reason Paris and London are in the frontrunning, but it surely can't help. Madrid's plan looks nice, but for a medium-sized country (40 million) to have had two games in two decades is quite a lot. The US has almost 7 1/2 times the population, and it's had several games within that timeframe before (1980 LA, 1996 Atlanta = 16 years, 1996, 2012 NY = 16 years), but the bid seems shaky and not too confident. Security is also a larger concern than in any other city.

Thanks. After looking it up in Google, there's an IOC session every year, but every two years is important, because they select the Winter/Summer Olympic site. The last IOC session that selected an Olympics was Moscow (summer) and Prague (winter). There's more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IOC_meetings. So it's still prestigous to host an IOC session where a host city is selected.

If they don't give it to New York, look for American broadcasters to cut back dramatically on advertising revenue.

I suppose other advertisers and companies such as Vodafone, Toyota, etc would simply have the lions share of advertising to what is one of the worlds largest sporting events on the planet!

US TV rights are still over 50% of the Olympic TV income. The ratings for both Sydney and Athens (and presumably Beijing) are shrinking among the American audience. If they don't bring the games back to the western hemispere by 2012, there will be further declines.

The latest rankings put Paris first, but London just one point behind.

The Bejing games will attract alot of attention around asia, which will more than make up for the loss in American Audiences.

And how is Athens not in the western hemisphere?

I think NYC won't win, because people don't want Olympic Games there. Moscow would win if we were in 70's years. Now, they have many problems. Madrid would be a good candidate if if the Games of Barcelona were not so fences. Paris lost 3 times, so it isn't a very good candidature, but the IOC has a debt with Paris. London... London has a good candidature, and the Commonwealth will vote it.

1º Paris/London
2º Madrid
3º NYC
4º Moscow

Technically, the western hemisphere is from west of GMT to the International Date Line, so that means Germany, etc. are also not in the western hemisphere. However, Greece, Germany, etc. are in the Western World, which differentiates, basically Europe and lands where their descendants are the dominant group (the Americas, Australia).

Paris getting through to the second round of voting for the 2008, even though Athens was already set for 2004, is a testament to how strong the bid is. Many cities throw in bids just to get cred, get their city out there.

If NY won, it'd definitely be great for the US networks. But unfortunately, it's not the NBC Olympic Games.
