What was your first Digital Camera, and how is it compared to the one you have now?

My first was the Vivitar Vivicam 3915, 5 MP, 2x digital zoom, 2560x1920 resolution, 1.4 inch screen.. it costed me $250 CA (approx. $200 US) .. I think it's alright for it's price.. It's also very easy to use.. I'm not too happy with it's picture quality though .. I still have this camera now, but I am planning on getting a Kodak EasyShare DX7590 as soon as I get the money :)

I bought my first digital camera in the summer 2000 it was a Kodak DC240 Zoom with 1.3 Mpxiels (1280x960) and 3x optical zoom I payed 661 USD for it. Three years in june 2003 I bought the Canon Digital IXUS 400 (called Canon Powershot S400 in North America) for 697 USD it has 4.0 Mpxiels (2272x1704) and also 3x optical zoom.

I would like to own the Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT) but it's expensive....

My first one was a crappy AGFA CL50 or CL30 I can't remember. Thenk I bought a Nikon Coolpix 885, and I discovered the optical zoom!!!! OMG!
Now I own a Nikon D70 and many lenses! Its THE CAMERA! Nothing to do with compact cameras.

I bought a Dimage 7i when they first came out (about 3 years ago). I don't see replacing it anytime soon...fits my photographic needs just fine. It may get passed by megapixel size, but that's not such a huge deal for me. It's an extremely versatile camera...as sophisticated or unsophisticated as you want to make it.

I got an Olympus c-5060WZ several months ago, and I am very happy with it, even though it has been surpassed by a better model. I thought I took a risk buying this camera cuz I never heard of Olympus before, but I chose it anyways since it seemed like such a good camera and I didn't really like any other ones. Most digital cameras are ridiculously small and I find them awkward to hold, even though my hands are small.

My first camera was the ledgendary Sony P-1 ....3megapixles, 3x optical zoom, and a hefty $800 US price.
I was happy, it provided good results.

then i bought a Sony T-1...5mp, 3x optical zoom... a good $600 US..
I thaught and still think the results are pathetic for the premium price.

And now i have a Panasonic Fz-3. a whooping 12x optical zoom, but only 3mp.
3mp is fine for me cos i only print A4 and my main uses are for internet. The colours, and the focus is much better than previous cameras, and it has so much less noise too. So far im very happy.

i want a Panasonic Fz-20...:)

Haha...I see I am not the only one who's first cam was a Sony. :D

My first was the F55V, bought in July 2000 for about S$1300 (US$784). It was Sony's second best camera at that time with a 3.3 CCD, but it has no optical zoom.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0004/f55v.jpg

I bought my second camera 2 weeks ago....a Canon 350D, as if most of you dont know by now. :D Got it for about S$1800 (US$1,085) with a kit lens, and I also bought a Tafron zoom lens for about S$600.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS350D/Images/frontview-001.jpg

Last week, I bought my 3rd digi cam, and its a sony again! ;) I cant do without my F55V, so I got its latest reencarnation...The F88!

http://www.kameraklub.co.za/digitza/digimages/sony-f88.jpg

5CCD, 3X optical zoom, a whole host of other features, and it costs me just S$550 (US$331)!

Since 1.5 years I have a SONY Cybershot DSC-P32, 3.2 MP max and only x3 digital zoom. The price was $237 from the Sony dealer (much cheaper then that in the market). However I redeamed points acumulated on my Credit Card worth $164, so I actually paid only the difference.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00008VE27.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

But 8 days ago I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 for $505, inclusive 512MB SD Card or $457 for the camera alone:

My first digital camera was a Sony DSC-P72, it had no manual functions, 3MP, 3x zoom. Recently I upgraded to a Canon EOS 350-D, and am looking to buy some L-glass whenever I can shell out the $$. Which won't be any time soon, but that's ok.

guess so... That's why canon 350D owners are offered to get a vertical grip at S$169. :)

350D was too small for my hands too. But, I like it light. Personally, prefer D70 but like the weight of 350D. :colgate:

The Nikon body does have a significantly larger lens attached, but the difference is quite phenomenal, yes. I have quite big hands, but I like the size of the 350D, maybe in the future I'll grow out of the small-sized DSLR, but then I'll probably just switch to the 20D, or if there's a new version of that one at that time. But for now, the 350 is fine for my standards :)

I bought my first digital cam when they came out, could be like 10 years ago. It was a piece of shite from a brand name called 'trust' (what's in a name). When I returned it it got my money back on the spot, no questions asked. After that I bought a HP camera which had 1 mp on it. I still got it, mainly because no one wanted it for free after I had bought a new one. Now I keep it as a relic.

Digital camera sales in Asia surge to record 10.6 million units in 2004: IDC

SINGAPORE : Sales of digital cameras in Asia outside of Japan surged to a record 10.6 million units in 2004, up almost 40 percent from the previous year, an industry monitor said Thursday.

International Data Corporation (IDC) said strong demand from China, Australia and South Korea -- collectively the three biggest markets in the region last year -- powered the record volume.

For the next five years however, India and China are expected to be the fastest growing markets for digital cameras with compound annual growth rates of 50 percent and 26 percent, respectively, from 2005 to 2009, it said in a statement.

Competition is expected to heat up over the next two years as digital camera makers seek to enlarge their share of the market, it added.

"In the next 12 to 24 months, the market will continue to witness intense competition among digital camera vendors," said Maggie Tan, IDC's regional research manager for digital imaging program.

"Other than HP (Hewlett Packard), Kodak and Epson, the market will see the emergence of Taiwanese brands especially in price-sensitive markets.

"It is imperative that these vendors understand the varying market dynamics as well as consumer needs and lifestyles when they penetrate into each market." - AFP /dt
