LOL :D

And what about Australian high speed trains?

Australian trains will be fairly similar to French TGV. Like the Spanish trains (the background train in the photo), they will be based on Alstom technology.

The foreground train is Spanish-made by Talgo and its Canadian partner Bombardier.

Do the australians have a high speed train?! Or is it just on project?
From where to where?! What's the average speed for the traject?
Would like to see photos if it's real... but i highly doubt it is more than a project since i've never heard about it.... Either that, or it isn't propper high speed... But I may be wrong. ;)

Your correct, there are no high speed projects currently underway, and there are no existing high speed trains. There is a semi-high speed project currently occurring on four regional Victorian lines from Melbourne and new trains that can reach 160km/h. The current fastest trains though are the Tilt trains in Queensland that run from Brisbane to Rockhampton (electric) and from Brisbane to Cairns (diesel) which can reach speeds close to 200km/h. There are still proposals for a high speed train link between Sydney and Canberra (in the above link), but it hasn't gotten anywhere yet.

I think there's another thread about this...

But why do you compare on of the oldest TGV with the newiest Shinkansen?

This is the TGV:

http://bestscreen.free.fr/Transports/Trains800/TGV%20Duplex.jpg

I like it beacause it's the fastest of the world (not in comercial use), and it's very safe: no accident since 1981.

^It's not a TGV, as our australian friend AG has already mentioned.
It's probably a train which top speed is between 160 and 200 km/h.
The top speed for the Porto-Lisbon train here in Portugal is 220km/h as it is a tilting train... And that's NOT high speed rail. ;)

For historical value, the TGV
For style and accuracy, the Shinkansen

I say Shinkansen because I am Japanese! :D

Let's not just compare the exterior, but the interior also. Here's the newest Shinkansen, "Tsubame", running through Kyushu.

Very nice fotos of series 800 . Have you got a cab view photo ?? Are the seats of 800s in standard class widther than 500 or 700 series ? I thing the German ICE (all generations) have the most comfortable seats . Shinkansens on the other hand are far more powerfull and more enviromental friendly (I thing!)

How fast the Shinkansen is?

Nephasto
May 18th, 2005, 12:05 AM
^Depends of the model.
It varies from 250km/h up to something like 350km/h I think... although I don't know the exact max comercial speed of the fastest shinkansen train on commercial service. It's either 300 or 350 km/h.
But there are plans for shinkansens at 400km/h.

;)
Special mention for Spanish AVE, a very well developed version of French TGV.

I both used ICE and TGV, and from a costumer perspective ICE is much better: far more comfortable than TGV. I personally like the design of the TGV more though. I have yet to ride Shinkansen, but I suppose it's great to ride. And in many aspects Shinkansen wins hands down: it is by far the oldest and most used high speed rail system on earth....

Hey
Just come back from a 3 week trip to Japan. I went up to Hokkaido and down all the way to Kyushu using my Japan Rail pass, which meant that I could try out the varuous shinkansen trains.
The ones I went on were
Hikari (Osaka - Tokyo)
Hayate (Tokyo - Hachine on the way to Hokkaido, no shinkansen in that northern island yet)
Hikari Railstar (Osaka - Hakata in Kyushu)
Tsubame (about 40mins of Kyushu, still building the rest of the line!)

The most comfortable was the Tsubame being the newest. The Railstar wasn't far behind. I had the misfortune of reserving a seat in the smoking section of the Hikari between Osaka and Tokyo....Never Again! I think I got enough passive smoke to give me 100 tumours.

The technology was great, but thinking on my stomach as I usually do, I thought the best thing about these trains and Japan Rail in general were the eki-ben bento lunch boxes! Yummy!

Not been on the ICE, do they have a restaurant car on it?

I've been on the TGV once from Paris to Geneva, but it was so long ago I can't really remember all the details (must be getting old).

I remember the food on Italian trains was fantastic as well, but again that was a long time ago.

I think Shinkansen is the best one, I've only ride in AVE, similar to TGV.
I think all are nice, but the designs of shinkansen are more stunning ;)

Yes, the older types of ICE (ICE 1 and ICE 2) have a full restaurant. The newest type (ICE 3) only has a bistro, which serves snacks and light meals.

Restaurant in ICE 1:

ICE bistro cars look nice. I've only seen ICEs from the outside as they zoomed past the taxi I was in, on the way to Frankfurt airport!

Design, speed, silent & very clean trains, variety of services, etc.
There are 3 types:

Hikari, it stops at almost every station.
Kodama, it stops only in main cities stations.
Nozomi, from city to city. The fastest service!
