Well following the success of similar threads in both the Livepoola nd Glasgow sub forums, i thought its about time we made our own demolition thread. i mean us here in brum and the west mids have seen sh*t loads of the things over the last 5 or so years....esp lots of blowdowns.....and with the birmingham conurbation having the most council tower blocks outside london, im sure we'll see our fair share yetr more to come.

here are a few from the archive!

i believe that in the brum area, over the last 5 years, we have seen over 60 blow downs.....amazing! and with the like of haddon tower and those near the m6 on th domiltion list, more blowdowns are yet to come........

used to walk past calthrope house every day to work.

Something perverse and thought provoking, the amount of towers that are falling seem to be replaced by an equal number of low to mid rise tenement flats (with a few really tall ones)... so what the feck is going on? If dense habitation is now regarded as outdated and all these blocks and estates are coming down then why are we rebuilding them in a not so different guise? Are Birmingham city council hoping that the people who live in these places will be somehow different to those that were there before...

Had a trip out to Castle Vale a few years back as part of a survey of tall buildings still there and those about to be demolished. That part of Brum was pretty densely packed with high-risers, and lost a lot of its towers from the late 90's onwards.

well i believe haddon towerb will be coming down sometime over the next year. clearance of the tower started in 2001 and once clear demolition work can start, hope they blow the damn thing up!

Sorry for being cheeky but I reckon Glasgow might be able to contest that too. ;)

hmmm, im not sure.... glasgows are definately taller but birmingham city council itself constructed 400 council blocks in the 1050's to 1970. and then we have the cities of dudley, wolverhampton, west brom and parts of solihull which have become council block heaven!

just a shame so many of them have already been torn down!

Wow! I know Brum pioneered some things in it's time but to think we had Wattle and Daub blocks before the Norman Conquest...

What the fuck? On the far left of this pic just next to the two tower blocks in the distance, is that West Bromwich's very own space needle tower (sort of like the one in Seattle)?? I didn't know it had an observation tower like that - when was that kept such a secret?? ;)

Those are Pleck Flats so I think you'll need to reiterate and proclaim it as Walsall's very own Space needle

Those West Bromwich blocks are some of my favourites - the town used to be littered with identical ones but now only 4 survive (Kenrick Park) plus one that had a makeover including the neon blue lights.
