I wanted to do a similar thing like the EE cities list or the NYC project thread by Vlad, but we aren't organized enough with a project section, and pretty much everyone posts whatever wherever, so you have many duplicates. So good luck with that :D
anyway, how did you manage to find them all without the Search function?
EDIT: if you want any other fancy things for the title, I'll copy and paste
Pavlo
May 16th, 2005, 04:04 AM
I can use the search function because I have a special version of SSC.

You've hacked an admin's account and got yourself the search function too :D
Or bought yourself SSC deluxe, for $49.99 at Best Buy :P
well nonetheless, great thread, I just realized how much really is going on in Kyiv, how long that thread is

Hi guys!
Nice thread, looks like The Ukraine is under major reconstruction now, and hey Pan_Stanislav, thanks again for inviting me here.
Having said that, I'd like to propose (regarding the greetings/alert messages discussion) - "slushai suda!" ...for those... you know... "odessians" ;-)

What a great work, thank you Pan Stanislav. I came to this side very recently but found everything i've been searching so long on the web.
It's a pitty there is no proper skyline growing up in Kyiv. I think people would be even more enthusiastic about highrise architecture when watching at a beautiful quarter of skyscrapers (as we know from Warszaw)
There are only few clusters givin the atmosphere of a skyline: The Silver Breeze towers and the 6 Dnipro Towers.
Could somebody please post some actual construction standings pics ?

You're welcome. Btw, are you from Kyiv originally?
I entirely share your disappointment in Kyiv's skyline. But we must cope with it for some time more. Kyiv does not have any kind of a "standard" skyline, historical or modern, due to how huge it is. I mean it's almost the size of New-York, but with three times as less population. That's why we have these scattered projects all over the city. Moscow has the same situation.
This is Silver Breeze in September 2004. They haven't uploaded anything new since. And it doesn't look anything like the rendering yet.

hi ya guys!
Im an englishman who has married a Ukrainian girl. I am going to Kiev in June.
Im looking forward to see your country again, I havent been for a few years.
My wife's family are from Obolon.
Commie block nightmare. however parts of your city centre are beautiful.
I am really impressed with thoses pics of new neo classical buildings. I bet Kiev city council have forced the builders to obey the planning restrictions in historic parts of the city.
btw whats the weather like at the moment?
Your new president is ok by me, i dont even need a visa to go anymore.
If you can attract tourists to the city, their money alone would fund a construction boom.

There are 60 story and 67 story proposal talls for Kyiv. That's "supertall" for us. As for 40 story-talls there are quite a number of such residentials getting built in Kyiv.
The weather right now in Kyiv is 75 °F / 24 °C

wow, I will have to have a look at these new 'old' streets when im in kiev.
I've never seen anything on this scale before, whole streets. they must cost a fortune.
any idea how much an appartment would cost in one of these building.
I have plans (already) to retire in Kiev. I have to buy some property soon before the prices reach english values.
I hope that the Eurovision contest will bring some attention to kiev, what do you think?
are there many tourists there now?
its great that I dont need a visa this summer, do u think it will be reintroduced after september or will they just scrap EU visas.
Kiev could become a wonderful attraction. its beautiful, clean, and safe.
the prices would probably go up, but the plane tickets would come down,
I wish easyjet would fly direct for £49, instead of the £250 I have paid to go thru Amsterdam.
where did people live before all the commie blocks were built?

- I can find out how much they cost. But on average, you can buy a decent apartment in a normal buildings ( that's not a commieblock ) for 150.000 euro and the better location and more rooms of course the price goes up to 400.000
- Yes, I think Eurovision will make Kyiv more famous and also recent Orange Revolution helped in this respect.
- I'm not in Kyiv right now, I guess there are many tourists :)
- The government is still not sure whether to leave it like that. They're expecting some kind of cooperative decision on behalf of EU toward Ukrainian citizens, but nothing of that sort has came yet. Ukrainian government wants EU to abandon visas for Ukrainian journalists and students.
- Have you been to right bank Kyiv? I understand since your wife is from left-bank, hence Obolon, that's probably where you stayed for most of the time. Yet most Kyiv, 75% at least, is on the right bank and there are not as many commieblocks. There are hundreds and more of streets with normal residential buildings built in 19th century and early 20th.
This is a typical Kyiv right-bank street:
http://www.nostalgia2.kiev.ua/img/bella/bella_02.jpg
And this is mine. Some commieblocks appear sporadically, but not in significant quantities.
http://www.nostalgia2.kiev.ua/img/album_stanislav/stanislav_06.jpg
By the way, Obolon is changing it's look as well:

of course ive been to the over side, I wouldnt wanna spend all my time in Obolon.
I have seen those new appartment above, are they the ones where the pedistrian area is ontop of a underground car park?
they are building hundreds of these new appartments along the bank of the river, there is a nice walkway (still under construction last time)
So ur in NYC, brighton beach, thats in Brooklyn isnt it. yeah Ive been there too.
(ive been 2 alots of places) there is a big Jewish and Russian community there.
When I first met my wife working in the US, we visited some of her friends who lived in Brooklyn.
shame ur not in Kyiv, I would have met u for a drink! is there anyone here on the forums that is actually in Ukraine?

May 20th, 2005, 04:16 PM
^I don't think so, there isn't a lot of Ukrainians on the forums to begin with. We gotta do some sort of Operation Insert-Ukrainians-In-Forum. :D I could meet you for a drink during the summer, I'll be in Kyiv, and Dnipro, nad Vinnistya, and Lviv (probably), and Kryvyi Rih. Are you in Kyiv? If you are, it would be great if you could sometimes take construction update pictures.

May 20th, 2005, 06:23 PM
There is a user who is in Kyiv right now. Max. But he's not active here. He actually recommended this forum to me. I guess Ukrainians living in Ukraine go to forums where they speak in Ukrainian to discuss these construction updates and here you mostly find people that are either studying or working abroad. [Or living, for that matter].
I think the pedestrian area in Obolon' is finished, it's quite nice in comparison to what the "soviet" Obolon' looks like. There is a plan to connect Obolon', Troeshina and other left-bank districts with a metro line going north-south. That would be convinient.

Thanks for all your trouble, but I would think that most of them are already built. I've seen most of those projects quite a while ago.

^Anytime, I got them from a site that I don't think said the built(if) date, or anything like that. There were some projects that had renderings but also had photos of the finished building, so I didn't include them. I probably should've, I don't know, some were quite nice. Btw, I should still post about 20 more projects from all over Ukraine :) Including a village in Kyiv region.

Stop trying to start trouble. I talked to Andrew while he was posting those. I appreciate all the trouble he went through, but I just said that I've seen those before. So, most likely they have been already built. It doesn't take so long to build them.
And I'm enjoying the projects in the rest of Ukraine, those I haven't seen, and they look great! :) Good job.

Kind of weird building for UKRAINIAN SCIENCE ACADEMY but it looks refreshing. Though I don't get it why is it near the fort.
Anyway, just want to mention that big projects should also get a seperate thread and not just be posted here. Like the largest railway station in Europe that Andrij has fantastic renderings of.

Well in Ukraine, unlike many other places, first comes the sponsor, then the designer. So it will be built any way, unless sponsor rejects the design and chooses another one.
In other countries it seems that first the architect suggests something and then they look for a sponsor. I don't quite get how it works there though.

Oh crap - I totally forgot about this Dnipropetrovsk project. I collected info on this one and there are about 5-8 more nice ones like this - I was collecting info on odesa, harkiv and doneck lately (for SSP) and totally forgot about Sicheslav (Dnipropetrovsk). Thanks Pavlo :) thanks A LOT - otherwise God knows when I would have remembered about it ( cos my HD is trashed with Ukr pictures and projects - DVD worth of data - No S**T!). Thanks :D

No, you know why I react like this?
Cos I'm the only one entering info at SSP. At first ~3-4 yrs ago there were a few crappy sites with info on construction and only in Kyiv. Then about every 3months the info was nearly doubling - now we have 100's of projects etc posted (dozens of architecture, construction, realestate company sites with pics and description, etc.) on KYIV alone. Then Doneck, Harkiv, Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk are starting to develop in much the same way Kyiv was in 2000 (meaning both construction and information about it online) - so I swear - I feel like I am trying to keep the worms from crawling out of a can the size of a cauldron... LOL - it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep a tab on everything, enter the info on SSP and THEN draw the diagrams...
You know how many Excel sheets I have with lists of buildings, projects, etc with Links to pictures on my HD... man. I need help - anyone volunteering?

There is also a large Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral being built in Kyiv. They are moving the head of the church from L'viv to Kyiv, and this cathedral is to become the centre of Ukrainian Catholism (of course the vatican is still above it). I found some pics of the construction and gleaned what I could off of a site... however, it is pretty much all in Ukrainian and since I am not fluent yet I don't really understand it. (http://www.kyivpatriarchalsobor.org). The front page of the site has a little picture of what it will look like when it is finished.
But anyway, here are some pics of constuctions:

Thanks for reminding ME about IT, Nate :okay:
That's right, Head of Ukrainian Catholicism decided to move to the capital, from Lviv, where they traditionally were located. Though I disagree with the design, as I understand it's this new "modern church" trend, which I don't appreciate much. It would've been much better, if they built a traditional neogothic Cathedral. Also it's location is quite weird, it's quite far away from centre and is among commieblocks.
There's lots of debates about it, particularly bunch of criticism from Russian Church in Kyiv ( it's still very numerous and influential ), they were lobbying for denying the right for Catholics to build a new Church in Kyiv.
The way I see it, head of every Church in Ukraine should be in Kyiv, the capital. So I approve of this decision. For example, the Tartar Muslims are also building their main Ukrainian mosque in Kyiv, it's just logical.
Nate

^ thats one of the arguments from the Ukrainian Catholic Church. They were saying that although L'viv is a very beautiful city, it is a provincial city nonetheless. So they wanted to move it to Kyiv.
And the reason that the Moscow church is angry is because they say that the catholic church is invading their territory... which is kinda funny because the Ukrainian Orthodox Church -Kyiv patriarch, is not upset at all about the move, but is actually welcoming it.

and an office building
http://www.grad.kiev.ua/infoglueDeliverLive/digitalAssets/249_4.jpg

Today fortress is in very bad shape, however its now a site of archeological excavations, since before the fort was constructed, there were a series of other, even older buildings, including an ancient Church. Besides that, it's being cleaned up and is getting prepared for the renovation. After the renovation the construction of additional space will begin.

I wanted to have a look at that new neo-classical street, but no-body had heard of it, they all said it must be Moscow.
I have a tough decision to make, my wife wants me to live in Kiev. She misses her family too much when she is in Manchester.
I have a slight problem though, I cant speak a word of Russian.
how the hell can i get a job in kiev. does anyone know anyone who works for a UK company in kiev?
Where would you rather live Kiev or Manchester? (kiev isnt the only city with a 'boom')
they are building skyscrapers for fun in Manc at the moment.
kiev is a beautiful city and i like it alot, and crime and murder rates are probably lower than in Manchester.

Who does she love more, you or her family? Why marry you if she can't live with you, I don't get it.
But if you get a highpaying job, close to the Uk standards in Ukraine, yes, I think it would be nice to go there as the prices are lower, plus Kyiv seems much more beautiful to me than Manchester. But if it's to get a lower salary and move there just because she wants to chat around, it's useless. She can always go there on summers

G'day,
This is a kind of decision you should really make on your own, with your wife, your family, friends and not necessarily rely on suggestions by strangers given on internet.
Here is the street, it is right down Andriivskyj Uzviz
http://www.archunion.com.ua/img/st_010/muzeum_071.jpg
As far as I know, Moscow doesn't have anything like this and looks mostly like the leftbank of Kyiv, where I remember you said you stayed. Obolon', was it? Or Troeschina? (Btw, Troeschina is getting an subway within 5 years, so it will be very easy and convienient to get to the city centre ).
There are jobs for native-English speaking population of Kyiv, which numbers in several thousands. There is an Irish Pub, only English-based newspaper www.kyivpost.com
Most English-speakers in Kyiv are there due to business, trade, embassy related activities. But I'm sure there are those who moved to Kyiv due to family reasons. In any case, the city is quite metropoliten however, eventually, you'll have to learn either Ukrainian or Russian. Though once you get pass learning cyrrilic alphabet, you'll find that it's not that hard. All European languages have a lot in common, for example, a "map" in Ukrainian is "mapa", while in Russian "karta", ( In German its landkarte )
:D
Anyways, my suggestion would be to live in Kyiv for some time, but don't sell your place of residence in Manchester yet. See how it goes, if you can find a well paying job and so on.
:okay:

Did you know that Marie-Antoinette was given to marriage to Louis XVI when she was 14, and she never went back to Austria and never saw her family and mother again. We don't see her complaining :D

I donno 3tmk - I find that kind of thinking a bit.... well.... chauvinistic - I guess that's just me.
As for the guy's question - depending on your professions etc., you CAN get a decent job with decent salary, it's just up to you, whether you would LIKE to do that, whether you could enjoy yourself there, whether that's the life you'd like for yourself. I mean - really - we can't answer that for you
- except YES - there IS a possiblity of getting a decent job - it's just all depends.

Hey i don't know if any of you Ukrainians know about this, but i'll post it here:)
http://www.vecer.com.mk/tekst.asp?tid=16191
That text says that there will be a reconstruction of the Kiev-Chop (spelling?) high way as well as the Lavov - Stroi high way, worth 45m euro's. It will be 96 kilometres long and built by 'Granit' a Macedonian construction company and it all should be completed by 30 months! :)
VelesHomais
September 10th, 2005, 06:36 AM
Thanks for the info. Though it cannot be 96 km, - this is just the part that will be constructed by Macedonian company ( congratulations, hope you build good roads ), altogether sounds more like 600km.
dejan
September 10th, 2005, 06:38 AM
Oh yeah, i think they could have meant 96km for one part or something...but yeah, we do build good roads lol:D

A minor off topic question.
"Рок на завршување на зафатот ќе биде 30 месеци"
Does that mean "Time for the construction/completion will be 30 months" if so, does Rok actually mean "time" ? Because in Ukrainian "Rik" is a "year", and in plural it's "ROKiv".
Just wondering. I'm curious at different Slavic languages.
dejan
September 10th, 2005, 07:01 AM
Sort of, but you got the idea of what it meant! Rok isn't really time, it usually means 'period' like use by date, date supposed to be finished by...yeah rok like a dead line date:)
VelesHomais
September 10th, 2005, 07:11 AM
Yeah, it's not hard to get most of the general meaning. It seems really close to Bulgarian , which is in turn similar to Russian, which I also know. But that's why "rok" seemed strange, because in this case it suggests a connection with Ukrainian more than with Russian, where year is "год". But now that you mention the word "period" it all makes sense. In Russian the word is СРОК so if you take the s out, you get rok. Though it's also similar to Ukrainian "strok".
I have strictly enthusiastic interest in slavic languages.
dejan
September 10th, 2005, 07:13 AM
Yeah, i think it's similar with Ukrainian coz my sister had an exhange student friend from Russia (Moscow) and she said that when she heard my sister speak, it sounded similar Ukrainian!
Yes year for us is 'godina' so another similarity:)
VelesHomais
September 10th, 2005, 07:18 AM
lol, godina is an "hour" in Ukrainian.
A lot of words sound similar but are entirely different in meaning.

September 10th, 2005, 07:24 AM

I aboslutely love how most apartment buildings have a grocery store on the first floor. It's amazingly convinient! I wonder if it's the same in Poland, and other EE countries?

I think it's great that Doneck is building this. I dont find the design spactacular though, but it doesn't have to be. There's no old architecture in Doneck, it's a new city and it should develope in its own way. But any construction, and particularly one that is pretty big like this, is a sign of development :)
Thanks for posting Pavlo.

Kyiv will get new ring-road in 2006. It will be 10-15 km away from existing outer ring road. Doesn't say how many lines..

Kharkiv will get TWO new metro stations by 2008.

Yes, it looks very interesting indeed. The main achivment of the architect is that this builidng does not look that tall. It stays almost in the center of the city on the Shevchenko avenue and surrounded by old building so the modern design would destroy filling of old nice avenue, but this building is built in such way that it feels natural and in way that it was here for long time. Nice job, agree.

It will be the largest train station in Europe.
Located on the left bank, not far from livoberezhna metro, just a little further in. In place where 1st and 5th lines will have a interchanging-station.

I dont understand while people from Ukrainian cities feel thats it's appropriate to speak in a different tongue Russian specifically, does your native language embrass you that much?
