View Full Version : Eastern Castles vs. Western Castles
M.Poirot May 18th, 2005, 07:32 AM I bet you're thinking "hey! we already have a thread like this!", but castles are different from palaces. Palaces are residences, but castles are mostly fortifications. So, which do you like better? Not only in style of the building itself, but surroundings, gardens, etc.
eddyk May 18th, 2005, 12:23 PM If Europes western.....Western Castles!
Küsel May 18th, 2005, 01:19 PM As long as there are no "American Castles" in question
But do you mean Europe vs Asia? Unfortunalty I only know European ones myself and the ones I visited in Asia were European fortresses, that doesn't count :(

kyenan May 24th, 2005, 11:30 PM The thing is Japan is the only country that has something like 'castle' in E. Asia. East Asia doesn't have the concept of castle like what Europeans say. But if you put the countries like Myanmar, Thai, Malaysia, and Indonesia in the category of East Asia, although I am not sure, there might be something to compare.
M.Poirot May 25th, 2005, 03:57 AM Southeastern and South Asia is also part of the "East", I think. So feel free to compare.

The heading for the thread should be people who needed to build castles and who didnt need to...In Europe and Middle East every decade there is a major fight and minor fights all over the map in the history except a few pax-romana,pax-islamica, pax-ottomana etc... look at the eastern people some internal riots in Japan, fights between southeastern nations during 11, 12 th century etc..some Chinese -Mongol, Chinese-Muslim fights , a few Chinese-Korean etc..and rivalry between chinese , Japanese among themselves which cannot be compared to any all out major battle of Europe and Middle East..

It's true that East Asia doesn't have castle. But that doesn't mean that there were less wars than Europe. For example, in the 7th century Korea, there were about 150 wars for a hundred-year period: the wars among Korean states, wars between China and Korea. Anyway, castle is not the only one that can be used in wars. In East Asia, warfare structures are just different from those of the Western world (Europe and Middle East), and that is the only reason why there is no castle in E. Asia. Do you have something like great wall of China?
Ellatur May 26th, 2005, 12:09 AM interesting thread!

DAMN!!!! I'm impressed to death with Europe! Great castles!!
EUROPE rocks the hell out!
by the way, it's very simple: no comparasion.. total humiliation from the western ones

wow ur childish. a lot of the indian "castles" look more like palaces to me..And they are indeed more lively. I can't really compare though. they are both different and the western castles are beautiful so are the japanese and other eastern ones.
spyguy May 26th, 2005, 04:20 AM Well that's your opinion I suppose. But if you look at the details of Western vs. Eastern, or basically blocks arranged into towers vs. stone that is hand carved into DETAILED works of art, there's a difference.
tkr May 26th, 2005, 05:10 AM Im not childish. The fact is that there is no comparasion. Like many already said here, these eastern ones look more like palaces then real castles. And the european ones, wow! :uh:, no comments about their beauty. Speechless, gorgeous. I cant even list here the castles I got impressed. The gardens (mainly Dunrobin Castle and Drummond Castle) were a spectacle apart.

fertek May 26th, 2005, 02:15 PM India is very well connected with the western part of the world, and the violence it brought upon earth for the longest time Greek,Persian, Arabic, Turkic, Mongoloid , Portugese, French, English infiltration made Indi very well aware of violence..and what an irony Indian people are called the most peaceful (or coward in the eyes of infiltrators) ..
So it would make sense for them to acquire the precautions and preperations when the time comes to step up and defend yourself...When I said Asia, I meant the people who didnt too much connection with the REAL WESTERN world From Persia to England in terms of understanding the real politic..

It's a misconception to say that castle or military architecture is alien to India. It's a country older than Europe with an equally violent past.
Quite frankly, the cities and countryside are almost littered with forts, palaces and castles from bygone states and empires.
Why, those photos Hindustani posted of the bewildering number castles were, except for the Mysore Palace, from only 4 cities of one state of India alone! And the photos he posted only account for about 1/3 the castles and forts in those cities.
Each state has a vividly different architecture, and it is reflected in the thousands of forts, palaces and castles in India.
Just because the West is oblivious to the fact and to the scale of these structures, doesn't mean they are an oddity.
cloudthegreat May 29th, 2005, 12:40 AM Western castles are much better. East doesn't really have much castles to begin with. But I generally hate castles, cold, dark, stony, very unattractive.

Ellatur May 30th, 2005, 04:52 AM well in far east not many castles were built. instead they built walls and fortresses in strategic places like side of a valley etc. they in fact were better than castles because it would be shitty for the attackers to use siege weapons and becasue of their locations garrison of 100 would stand against 2000 etc
