The goal of today's urban summiteering expedition:

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t1.JPG

View from near the mouth of Rach Van Thanh. The bridge is Nguyen Huu Canh. Getting closer...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t2.JPG

Soon we will be up there...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t3.JPG

And now we're on the roof!

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t4.JPG

There were some cable tv guys up there too, and they didn't let me linger. That's ok, we'll go to the external staircase. First things first, and the main reason why we came here, the Bitexco Manor!

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t5.JPG

The white building far away just to the right of the Manor is the Saigon Country Club. I live a five minutes' walk from there.

Zooooom:

They use different-colored formwork supports for each floor. Never saw that before...

Now we turn the camera to the right a little, and we see the Saigon Pearl site:

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t7.JPG

A little more to the right, with zoom, and we see An Phu. I forget the name of this building here, but it's on emporis. On the left, the cranes for the Cantavil site.

Now turning the camera some more. Rach Van Thanh, the Saigon river, and outlines of Phu My Hung in the distance.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t9.JPG

Zoom on the river:

That cute bridge on the right is abandoned. After school, boys jump from it into Rach Thi Nghe. But now zooming on our canal:

Now turning to the north.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t12.JPG

Zoom on the building on the right (repost). It's quite well visible also from Dien Bien Phu / highway 1A as we cross the Saigon river. I'd like to conquer it someday, and it has an external staircase, but it looks too high-class to be easy...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t13.JPG

Now zooming on some buildings on Dien Bien Phu; in front, Van Thanh park...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t14.JPG

Moving to the left. I love these retro buildings!

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t15.JPG

Zoom out. The retro building is on the far right.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t16.JPG

Now let's go to the other side of the building and see if we can get any shots of downtown...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t17.JPG

Now looking west. Here, the label is included in the photo.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t18.JPG

And the skyline. Morning would have been a better time for this shot. Nguyen Huu Canh is below.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t19.JPG

OK, back on the ground.

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t20.JPG

We say farewell to the housing estate (3 x 18 floors)...

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jaroslaw/t21.JPG

Notice the building on the right? 519 DBP, we saw it in photo #14. But all this photo-taking made me late... You! Where are you going?

Wow these shots are nice. Thanks Jaroslaw. Saigon has changed so much. I love the angles shots of the citylandscape.

This is my favorite one. I love this row of houses by the canal and teh green space behind them. If these rows are fixed up really nice it would be a great architectural characteristic of Saigon. Teh scale is apporiate too and the roofs create a nice profile unlike many parts of the city with uncontrolable roof lines. Like the white house in the row on the bottom of this pic.
It has a great potential to be really attractive. i would love to live in one of these houses. Kind of a like the houses in Venice but with asian style
