A city of the Greek island of Euboea. Prominent, with Eretria, in early colonizing activity in Central and South Italy and northern Greece. It lay at the narrowest point of the straits between Euboea and the mainland of Boeotia.

The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek χαλκος (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the neighbourhood. Chalcis was peopled by an Ionic stock which early developed great industrial and colonizing activity. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, it founded thirty townships on the peninsula of Chalcidice, and several important cities in Sicily. Its mineral produce, metal-work, purple and pottery not only found markets among these settlements, but were distributed over the Mediterranean in the ships of Corinth and Samos.

Γεια σας παιδιά!!! Καταρχάς έχω μείνει κατενθουσιασμένος που επιτέλους βρήκα ένα χώρο ανταλλαγής απόψεων και φωτό πάνω σε θέματα υποδομών. Με ενδιαφέρει πάρα πολύ οτιδήποτε σχετίζεται με υποδομές και με το φυσικό περιβάλλον. Άλλωστε αυτό είναι που βλέπουμε γύρω μας ότι κι αν κάνουμε και πρέπει να είναι όμορφο για να μας γεμίζει ικανοποίηση και αισιοδοξία για το μέλλον. Αν και μόλις σήμερα γράφτηκα στο φόρουμ, μου αρέσει τόσο πολύ που ήθελα κάτι να δημοσιεύσω και εγώ...Έτσι έβαλα μερικές φωτό από τη Χαλκίδα από μια εκδρομή μου το καλοκαίρι του 2004. Δεν είναι τίποτα το σπουδαίο, απλά το έκανα για να μάθω τη διαδικασία...:)

Chalkida is a very beautiful city but as concerns for Evoia in general, unfortunately after the completion of the Chalkida “new bridge” (shown in pictures above) no major project took place in the greater area of this beautiful island. That’s too bad because Evoia have great potentials for touristic and economical growth!

Unfortunately, you' re almost right!!! Time by time some works take place along the main roads of the island, that have improved transportation between Chalkida - Aliveri and Aliveri - Karistos. Also the thermal factory of the greek Public Electric Company, in Aliveri, in the near future will be upgraded by using natural gas.

And I forgot to mention that the road connection Between Chalkida and Schimatari is currently being upgraded to a motorway (2 lanes+emergency lane per direction):cheers:

Some pics from the Internet about the "Drakospita" (Dragon Houses), found around Karistos town in the southeastern part of the Evia island.
The "Drakospita" are ancient buildings, whose materials and astounding construction have moved our ancestors to consider them as supernatural creations, thus the name Drakospita meaning houses of dragons. The most famous is the Drakospito of Ochi (the mountain in the north of Karistos, a true architectural wonder at least for the time that was built (before 7 B.C.)).
