I am interested in Saigon's topology before 1954. So if someone could share some sources about the Saigon's canals and arroyos network, I would be grateful. As far as I know, some of them were buried or filled to gain room for construction with the massive immigration Northern refugees and the trend kept going with the economic development. It would be interesting to show to what extent the disapearance of these waterways changed Saigon.

I own a French map of Saigon from the 1940s. I'll try to scan it one of those days, or make a photo of it, but it'll take some time.

Hello all, I am a newbie in this forum. I live near Paris in France (Oh no ! Another damn French !). My interests are in urbanisation and architecture (past and comtemporary).
I like what you are doing here.

Mình mong ước tham gia vào một công trình đô thị & kiết trúc ở Đà Lạt.

By the way, we see so few projects related to public facilities. If someone could post museum, library, conservatory, hospital....

Jaroslaw1, What a luck to have you in this forum. We are trying to hold our saliva waiting for you to scan your map and superpose the current Saigon map on it, to highlight transformations

Tran welcome......you are a girl?
ABout DaLat city ya mentioned..........I think DaLat is the creepiest place.....it's boring, it's sad, the architectures are all over the place.......the weather is depressing....and the streets ya just walk around for a few hours and ya ended up at the same place, seeing the same people again............if ya wanted to run away from someone that city is not the place to be ..hehehe

a week ago, on Dong Khoi street, there is a exhibition of old Saigon picture and new Saigon picture, which had been taken from the air with the same view. You will see many changes of Saigon. Old Saigon seeing from the air is very beautiful. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera.
Yesterday, I have borrowed a camera from my friend (until yesterday, my friend could let me use his camera because of his family using), and then I went there. But.... :(.... the exhibition had taken away. :((
So, if anyone here had taken pictures from that exhibition, can you post? I love those pictures very much. :(
Thanks a lot.

I think Tran have a good idea.

DaLat should be a good place to think of urban lanscape and architecture, and it should be intersting. I did thought about that while I was visiting in vn last summer. here are some good reason for that to make this city is unique.

1. The weather is natural air conditioner.
2. Most of the tourist spots in vn are close or by the beach.
3. The topography of the city (hilly) is also very nice to take advantage. San Francisco and Seatle, US would be the best example.
4. There are also alot of thing to consider that make that place turn to be a much attracting to people to come to visit such the history, architecture, minority, views, location..etc.

As Bang said, I think the goverment of Dalat and the architecture department over there is totally lacking of control, serious, and stupid. They really detroy the place. I'm really sorry for that, hopefully in future if the goverment want to invest to the city, there is a change to make in back to be "thanh pho Hoa"

Please post them all, and if possible lay them over or aside current view for us to see differences.

the above photos are valuable, as you can see, the French applied much of British urbanism rules: straight cornered streets, numerous parks and public sqaure spread over the city area. So bad that these rules have not been respected since then.

But again, can we have maps with details on waterways, I would like to imagine how SGN could be with all these waterways preserved: the Venice (or the raw pearl) of Far East ?!

If you have noticed the legend under the photos posted by lovesaigon, the nowadays aerial shots are provided by the Ministry of Defence: Aerial navigation is very stricly controlled in VN. Only army aircrafts (and some PetroVietnam helicopters) are allowed to fly over towns.

As for my wish to urbanize Da Lat. Bang just reported the reason of it, Da Lat is a great place to live (waether, food...surroundings ), the property market is still quiet and affordable. Da Lat has hills and valley. It is close enough to the sea and its population remains few. For all these, I think this is a good place to carry out Great urban and architectural project. Let's make it a second Chandigar (the indian town planned from scratch by Le Corbusier).

Post these immediately! :bash:

:)

I've been to Chandigarh, and it's horrible. Dalat already has a modernist central market that succesfully defaces the heart of the city. That was my main problem with it. Can't wait to go to Sapa!

ok will do, lots of aerial photos but the quality for some aren't good, so I'll only post the good ones.
jaroslaw and Lovesaigon you live in Vietnam, why not buy that book mentioned above, and post some of that photos for us to see :)

I think Sapa is better, because for years it has been monitored and planned to fix house by house individually by the government and the French architects........Dalat on the other hand is too big compare to Sapa, so the funds are moderate.....there were so many tube houses. better yet it's a planned urban with the 20-30 art-deco and provincial chateaux architectures.........today people didn't care they added in 2 big neo-classical buildings 1 is the cityhall and the other I don't know.....but a lot other small neo-classical and modern building.
if ya love Dalat, visit her today will turn your face red with anger and your nipples blue with fear

The best thing I like about Dalat is the Sofitel! Not that I stayed there. I'd post some photos but they seem to have gone missing...

Jaroslaw, you're a lucky guy. Admitedly, based on recent shots, Chandigarh seems horrible because of poor maintenance I guess. Yet I enjoy the style of those plain concrete buildings thanks to the signature of Le Corbusier.

"Sài Gòn của những năm 1950 là một đô thị tương đối bằng phẳng, trải dài theo những con lộ rợp bóng cây xanh và những kênh rạch đầy ắp thuyền bè. Sài Gòn ngày nay đã vươn mình thành một đô thị lớn. Bạn có thể thấy sự thay đổi đó trong cuộc sống hằng ngày." So let's give back to SGN its waterways.

great maps u found there...i didnt realized they once planned to put that thanh bat quai right in the middle of saigon

coolink
December 24th, 2005, 09:44 AM
what are you talking about "planned to put" it was there before if you read about SG history
thanh "bat quai" was too big and was invaded many times so Tu Duc destroyed the old citadel and reduced the fortress to a smaller size called "thanh Phung"

Sg was once had western planned vaulban citadel and complete palaces like Hue ...so was Hanoi
Many of old buildings in Hue palace now were taking down from hanoi and later SG and moved by boat back to Hue and set up again in Hue....because those buildings are connected by joints not nails.

this is why I try my best to forget about the many wars in VN......if the Chinese, French, Russian (not USA, but Russian ideology) didn't come........ things would be so much better...and we will still have lots of old relics like Thailand and Burma
