View Full Version : New Bridges
Wonderwall May 24th, 2005, 02:04 AM The morning after, the winning political party has to sober up and take a look at all the promises they made. Does anyone have any pictures of the new bridges in the province? i.e. Port mann sibling, pitt river, okanagan, rav, etc?
pdf with info on pitt river bridge available in display board section of link below

mr.x May 24th, 2005, 08:19 AM where did you find that picture?
It was from a recently released report on the RAV website.

This is the only pic I've ever seen of the Golden Ears Bridge - probably not final, but I don't think it's any more elaborate than this (i.e. not cable stayed, not suspension, etc.).
The RAV North Arm Bridge will probably be the nicest of the new bridges.
On a smaller scale, the City of Vancouver is looking at continuing the Central Valley greenway/bikeway west of Clark Drive (from Grandview Highway North) - it could launch off into a bridge or ramp down to the flats.
West of Clark Drive
Staff is still exploring options between Clark Drive and the False Creek flats. A consultant study is underway on the feasibility and cost of a bridge structure. This consultancy is also exploring the feasibility of a ramp option on the south side of the Grandview Cut. Staff will be reporting to Council on the results of this study.
crazyjoeda May 24th, 2005, 11:50 PM I bet that new Fraser River crossing and the new Pit River Bridge will really change Maple Ridge and Langley in to much more urban suburbs.
yesheh May 25th, 2005, 05:40 AM pitt river bridge: nothing spectacular but probably pretty functional...

*Jarrod May 25th, 2005, 06:14 AM hey, with the new pitt river bridge, will they be keeping the two other bridges?
jer4893 May 25th, 2005, 07:25 AM ^I don't think so. Wasn't the whole purpose of the new bridge to replace the outdated ones?
crazyjoeda May 25th, 2005, 07:33 AM How many lanes is the Pitt bridge?
mr.x May 25th, 2005, 08:29 AM How many lanes is the Pitt bridge?
I think it's six lanes with space for LRT extension.
CF May 25th, 2005, 08:47 AM Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows is get 2 long over-due bridges. I think it's outragous that we still need to use the ferry system to get to Langley, and the Pitt River bridge is outdated, and a 6 lane bridge would help a lot.
officedweller May 26th, 2005, 02:36 AM The span will replace the two existing bridges - which I think are swing spans that open and close for river traffic.
mr.x May 26th, 2005, 02:57 AM YVR is planning to twin the Arthur Lang Bridge, the Airport Connector, and the Dinsmore Bridge. They also plan to build another airport connection to Vancouver, a tunnel.
Sorry to go off-topic, but what is happening now with that new Sea Island ferry terminal BC Ferries promised us?
yesheh May 26th, 2005, 05:31 AM I will stay on topic for now, but i am rather interested in that terminal...
the new pitt river bridge is 16m above the water (i think that's right), so there is no need for closures for marine traffic. hence, the two older bridges will be removed.
The bridge is 6 lanes wide. configurations being considered are 3 lanes each way, 2 westbound + 1 HOV/ 3 Eastbound, and 2/1 in both directions.... this bridge is also set up for the possibilities of adding one more lane in each direction in the future.... maybe if i get around to it i'll post a picture of the proposed interchange with the Mary Hill bypass.... what i really want though is a picture of the proposed cape horn replacement....!
mr.x, where did you find out about YVR's plans... are there any plans available? on their website?
Westcoast604 May 26th, 2005, 07:44 AM what i really want though is a picture of the proposed cape horn replacement....!
That would be interesting to see, but it's probably far from being released from the preliminary design stages to the public. I wouldnt expect anything too splashy though, probably something similar to the 200th St Interchange.

go to the Airport forum and go to the Vancouver International Airport thread.
npinguy May 27th, 2005, 01:50 PM i wonder how feasable is another bridge or tunnell to the north shore....
crazyjoeda May 27th, 2005, 11:17 PM Its feasable but its not going to happen. In the 80's they planed to build a highway downtown that would tunnel under the inlet to the north shore, which would have been a disaster. I find that transit to and from downtown - North Shore via Sea Bus is faster then driving over the bridges.
worldwide May 28th, 2005, 09:04 AM true, the seabus is faster than sitting in traffic on the lions gate bridge
mr.x May 29th, 2005, 12:38 AM The RAV line should be extended one day to the North Shore and then the line should split, one direction going to central North Vancouver and the other to central West Vancouver, replacing the Waterfront-Lonsdale Seabus.
crazyjoeda May 29th, 2005, 12:44 AM After or at the same time that the UBC M-Line extention is done, the Surrey line should be extended to Cloverdale where a huge park and ride should be built.
Westcoast604 June 1st, 2005, 01:40 AM Why would you build a big park & ride in Cloverdale? You guys like to dream up things but don't really have much logical reasoning for it. I think a better location would be near HWY 1 in Guildford where a rapid transit expansion would happen before one to Cloverdale. Thats the route most people from the Valley travel in on, so it would make more sense than Cloverdale which is out of the way. Rapid Transit to Cloverdale isn't going to happen...there is perminant ALR seperating it from North Surrey.
I think it's six lanes with space for LRT extension.
6 lanes with 1 HOV westbound and the future possibilty of a 2nd HOV eastbound. They havent decided yet though, it could open as 6 standard lanes. Where did you hear there will be room for a future LRT line?

It was from several articles I read earlier this year.
jer4893 June 1st, 2005, 07:57 AM I think a logical thing to do would be to extend the RAV line all the way down the 99 corridor and have a big park and ride with busses traveling to Ladner, Tsawwassen and the Ferry Terminal. The Line would continue down 99, have a park and ride to White Rock and finally join with the last station in Surrey.

I see that happening from Richmond Centre and south on, however, of course it wouldn't be the extravagant technology RAV has or SkyTrain. Definetely, some sort of LRT. I believe the City of Richmond is planning LRT to Steveston with somewhere along Richmond's RAV Line on No.3 Road as the starting point.
