After a number of years and some very intense planning and work Hong Kong's Kai Tak Airport has finally reopened. The honor of landing first went to a new Chinese airline that flies commuter flights between Shenzhen and Kai Tak. In the below photo you can see one of Pearl River Delta Air Lines fleet of eight Fokker 50s on finals for Kai Tak's refurbished runway.

The old terminal has been cleared from the east side of the runway and a newer, but smaller terminal has been built on landfill on the western side of the runway. Because the airport is only allowed to handle short haul flights, as the big ones go to Chep Lap Kok, the height restrictions on buildings near the airport in Kowloon has been raised and you can see that quite a few tall buildings have sprung up. I'm sure that being so close to the new commuter Kai Tak was quite an inducement for building near the airport.

In addition, the Hong Kong SAR has built a new velodrome on some extra land that was reclaimed during the project. The strange circular building with many cellular antennas sticking off the roof, will allow Hong Kong bicyclists to exercise on an inclined track away from Kowloon's busy streets.

Does Canary Wharf have London City Airport right at its doorstep for a Kai Tak-style approach?

^I've never been there, so I can't say for sure, but I assume that the apparent proximity of Canary Wharf and LCY is an optical illusion. Although, there is apparently a height restriction at Canary Wharf because of LCY.

Ha! Imagine all those developers who would lose millions $ in the proposal to house over 250 000 people!

Hehe good one... Canary Wharf (height restriction is 240m i THINK) is around 3.5 miles west of LCY. Reason the towers look so prominent is because there's virtually no development behind it due to the flightpaths at City.

LCY approach from the wharf side is actually quite steep due to the buildings, 5.5 deg compared to 3.
