I put some pics from the new terminal in madrid-barajas airport, wich i think is gonna be one of the greatest in the future, but not well known, just in 2006.
the new terminal has a main buildind 1.140 m long and a satellite building 930m. long. both are comunicated by an underground train.
the total size is 940.000 m2, with 21.000 parking places and 104 fingers.
the different colors in each area, like a rainbow, are just to make it easier to move yourself to the right place
i hope you enjoy the pics, i really love this airport :)

I hope they have a plan to replace the existing terminals here, they'll be unacceptable after this opens. :) :)

it's planed to make a new airport in southeast metropolitan area 'campo real', because the previsions are that 'barajas' will be collapsed in 2015.
anyway, think that this new terminal is ready for 70 million passengers, and i don't expect more that those figures in 2015.

I think they're already unacceptable, but these new terminals will really make them look bad. I'd say the real problem in Barajas is that people smoke all over the place (even if it's a non-smoking airport), hope that changes.

But I'm very impressed with the work they've done. :)

What puzzles me is, the new terminal is going to have a TON more gates and parking spots than the current three terminals combined, which from aerial shots I've seen only have maybe 10 or 15 gates at the most. Wouldn't it make sense to move everyone to the new "T4" till they can build a new home for non-Skyteam members? :) :) :)

It is impossible to move everyone into th new T4 because there is no room for all the airlines. The old terminals might look very old but half of the T1 and the T3 are prety new and functionnal. The number of gates of the old terminals are 70 more or less so the old terminals are not so small (even if it looks like). BTW the airlines going to T4 are Oneworld alliance airlines + most of non-alliance airlines. Star alliance, sky team, low costs and most charter airlines will stay at the old terminals.

boring and awfull? ok, it's your opinion, but i think this building can be anything but boring.
most of airports use to be build in glass, steel, and concrete, making it so cold. i think this one is quite warm and comfortable, with all this wood roof and using the different colors.

Not really, the old terminals have almost the same amount of fingers (40) than the new (45) so it is imposible the closing of the old buildings. They look awful, old and boring, but unfortunately they are still necessary to take all the airport traficc

Thanks so much for this info! It was really difficult for me to see from aerials how big Terminals 1 - 3 are, now I understand why they'll continue to operate! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I like the inside better than the outside. I still think Guangzhou and Incheon's airports look the best.I have never been to Incheon - just seen the photos. However Guangzhou's, though competent, is nowhere close to Madrid Barajas's level. Guangzhou's modernist roof is also compromised by the supporting pillars. It's good but not that good.

It's true that the Terminals 1,2 and 3 are bad. It's old and it does not look very clean. Smoking at the airport? I didn't see anybody this year smoking over there, only in the smoking-areas. that was an issue of 2 or 3 years ago when everybody in Madrid smoked in public buildings/places. Now it's different.
But I feal comfortable in Barajas, I don't know why, but how nice and big Paris CHDG and Schiphol Amsterdam are, it will not give me the sense of safety and feeling at home over there. Barajas feels good in mine opinion.

Specially when the new terminal will be opened, I can't wait anymore evreytime I see it I want to see the building from inside!

Top marks for originality.

Trouble is, this could also be its downfall.

Inside, the colours, the wood and the undulating roof make it look spectacular.

But from the exterior, those same bright-colours, which go with the circular columns, fluid shapes and windows make it look like a fucking dodgy British leisure centre!!!

I guess it's 'a love it or hate it' thing.

i don't want to spoil your amazement but for me the design of the terminal is kinda boring and awful.

This is just one example of how french people can't admit things go better outside France. France is somewhat "stuck" for the last years. No new investments, not really important new infrastructures. You've got to admit it, french people don't like that a "poor" country like Spain is passing over France in some aspects.

If you want to think the design of terminals is boring and awful, then it's up to you. However, this "boring" and "awful" design is on the first pages of architecture magazines all over the world, and it's admired all over the globe for being one of the most important airport investments ever done.

I love France, I really admire french culture, but the worst thing you have is your infinite "chauvinisme". With our characteristic modesty and making no publicity at all, Spain is taking off. You'll have to manage with living with a developed and modern Spain... But will you ever be able to? Maybe not, french will be still thinking that every single thing done in France is much better.

And this message does not want to piss anybody off, just a personal thought that I think many people will agree on.

Salut ā toute la France.

Salut ā toute la France.

I totally agree.

The funny thing is that the French drive in "Spanish" cars (a Renault Factory is in Spain). They don't know it.

I know a French friend of mine and he is always jealous when I take him to Madrid or another parts of Spain and he is always comparing. Al the good things are not so good at all for him, all the bad things in Spain, or the things that are not so good as in France, he thinks and says that Spain is terrible in those aspects. But he knows that we have highways of almost, and sometimes of better quality than in France, and in Spain we don't have (the great part) to pay for it!

And the projects of Madrid Barajas, ofcourse you like it or you don't like it. But the project itself is very interesting!

In may senses France is like a museum, specially in architecture. I think that there is much more inspiration in London, Berlin, New York, etc. Paris is like a wonderful cementery. Beautifull but it smells a bit to dead bodies. I prefer something fresher, even if itīs less perfect that Paris like the cities that I have said. Anyway I find Nouvel, Perrault and other French architects are interesting. :)
