IchO May 25th, 2005, 02:07 PM Wow ;)
Chicago Hokie May 25th, 2005, 02:09 PM One quick note: A good portion of the glass distortion in photo 2 will only occur during erection. Normally the glass is allowed to move freely in the button fixing to reduce internal stresses under loading conditions. However, during construction, the glass is temporarily locked so that the wet silicone seal can be applied at the theorhetical design location. Once the silicone is applied and cured, the glass will be unlocked and most of the distortion will go away. Of course, it will never be perfectly flat.

I too can't wait for this one to open, I think it'll give Hong Kong a run for its money.
Could I humbly request that no one else post photos from Suvarnabhumi's website here, perhaps just post links instead? I don't know how well they load for everyone else, but for me they're EXTREMELY slow. Thanks!

bs_lover_boy May 29th, 2005, 12:56 PM Is the airport a modification of Scheme "A"?
satit28 May 29th, 2005, 01:11 PM /\
i would think so.............
Hitesh May 29th, 2005, 04:48 PM i think the louvres originally planned for the roof trellis on main terminal building look a lot nicer than the skylights they eventually installed only directly over the terminal. the louvres are still on trellis that covers the outdoor gardens and kerbside access if you want to compare.
but it all comes down to $$$ at the end of the day.

In this pic [and others too] it looks like they're building another concourse arm that's jutting out between the two in the front of the terminal. Or is that something else? Does anyone know? :) :) :)
Chad July 8th, 2005, 03:38 AM Thats the Atrium hall leads to the underground highspeed rail link station that will connect the airport to city terminal :)
Chicago Hokie July 8th, 2005, 03:50 PM "Thats the Atrium hall leads to the underground highspeed rail link station that will connect the airport to city terminal"
Incorrect. That is the connection to the underground Automated People Mover station, which will connect passengers to a future satellite concourse being built in Phase 2. The reason that the enclosure is built now is to avoid apron disruption when the airport is in operation.
The high speed rail link station to the city is fully underground on the entrance side of the Terminal.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, thanks Chicago Hoagie. Yeah the people mover makes more sense, will it not be used though until they build some satellite concourses? :)
Tornado July 8th, 2005, 08:11 PM I heard that the satellite concourses will be built in next five years after the traffic volume increases.

No, What incorrect is what you typed.
The train will stop at sattellite terminal in the future, yes and will also continues to The Makkasan Central.
I'v been to the site manytimes and discussed to the Consortium, ITO jointventure and The NBIA Company them selves already.

ignoramus July 10th, 2005, 04:00 PM Honestly I DETEST those raw messy industrial looking legs that support the roof. Otherwise, everything else looks almost PERFECT, especially the blue glass and the fabric looking roof cover...
Chicago Hokie July 10th, 2005, 06:23 PM 1. "The train will stop at sattellite terminal in the future" - Correct, the train will stop at the future south terminal (not called satellite terminal), but it will not stop at either the 1st or 2nd midfield satellite concourses. There will be no check-in or departure immigration control at the satellite concourses, so the express train cannot drop off passengers there.
2. The express station for the Phase 1 north terminal is fully underground at front of the north terminal. The high speed rail extension to the future south terminal will run underneath the APM tracks. The APM will have stops at the north terminal, 1st satellite, 2nd satellite, then south terminal.
3. The original photo shows the connection enclosure between the middle of Concourse D and the underground APM station.

Thanks Chicago and Chad, I understand how it'll work now. So the "structure" in the middle of the tarmac is simply there to cover up construction of the train tunnels for now?
Isan July 13th, 2005, 02:27 PM Suvarnabhumi fully operational only in January
Bloomberg
Bangkok's new $3 billion international airport won't be ready for full commercial operations until January, more than three months later than scheduled, Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Juthamas Siriwan has said.
The Suvarnabhumi International Airport, designated Thailand's national priority project, is officially scheduled to start operating on September 29. Instead, that will probably be the date of its “soft opening,‘‘ Juthamas said in an interview. “Full operations will be January next year,‘‘ she said in Bangkok. “It's almost finished.‘‘
Bangkok's aging Don Muang International Airport can't compete successfully for additional flights and passengers with new, larger airports in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul. According to reports in the media, almost 3.9 million foreign visitors flew into Bangkok in the first six months of 2005, 1.4 percent more than the same period a year earlier.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra acknowledged on June 27 that the airport “will not open on schedule,‘‘ and said about 7 percent of construction still had to be completed. He didn't provide a new time line.
Airlines have complained to the tourism authority about delays and a lack of information on the revised schedule, Juthamas said. She has recommended that regulators and Airports of Thailand Plc keep airlines informed about progress on the project, and help with claims of compensation.
The delay comes as Thailand is struggling to lure back visitors to its southwest beach resorts after the December 26 tsunami that killed more than 5,400 people – half of them tourists.
The tourism authority was seeking an additional 3-billion baht ($71 million) budget to market Thailand more aggressively as a holiday destination to different countries, including India and China, Juthamas said. According to reports, the government has approved an additional 2.5 billion baht.
“It is a selling point if you have a new airport, and also you can promote the convenience of a direct flight from anywhere, which is one thing that makes tourists decide to come,‘‘ Juthamas said. “I think the airport authority is trying to accommodate all the needs of airlines, and to open it as fast as possible.‘‘
Don Muang International Airport may be converted into an exhibition center, Juthamas said.

Isan July 23rd, 2005, 01:42 AM Airport could be delayed a year
AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK
Construction work which is behind schedule could delay the opening of Suvarnabhumi airport for a year to September next year at the latest, a source at New Bangkok International Airport Co (NBIA) said yesterday.
Despite promises by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit to finish construction of all facilities by Sept 29 this year, the source, who is directly involved in the project, was pessimistic that could be achieved.
Construction was likely to last until December, but then another three months would be needed to test system integration and another six more months for virtual operations, the source said.
The construction of an elevated road in front of the airport's terminal has failed to meet its deadline and the builder, S & V Joint Venture of Shimizu Corp and Vichitbhan Construction Co, have been fined 22 million baht.
Other construction jobs which are complicated are also delayed and contractors are putting on extra workers to accelerate their work, according to the source. Unlikely to meet deadlines are a remote aircraft parking area and a cargo parking area that Kampangphet Viwat Construction Co must complete next month. Construction work is only 60% complete.
Initially the government announced Sept 29 this year as the date for the airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district to open. Later it said that date was set for all construction projects to finish.
Srisook Chandrangsu, chairman of Airports of Thailand, the agency supervising NBIA, has already admitted a delay was likely with expectations the airport would open in March next year.
The cost of construction materials had gone up, the same source said. The cost of asphalt, for example, had risen from 5,700 baht a tonne to 10,200 baht per tonne. But Mr Suriya still expected construction to be finished by Sept 29 this year as planned.
One of the tasks to be accelerated was the installation of 26 CTX 9000 bomb scanners, the minister said.
The airport builder, ITO Joint Venture, would have to work together with GE InVision, the supplier, to complete the task by Sept 29, he said.
The direct sale agreement on the detectors was signed on Thursday. Mr Suriya said the ceremony could not be arranged in advance due to a problem with ITO. NBIA reached an agreement with ITO on Wednesday, he said. ITO would be fined 2.5 million baht a day if the consortium could not completely install the scanners by Sept 29. Agreement on that condition was only reached on Wednesday, so there was no time to tell the press about the signing ceremony.
Thawatchai Suthiprapha, the ITO project manager, said the consortium, comprising Italian-Thai Development, Takenaka and Obayashi, would talk to NBIA on Tuesday on the working plan for the scanners and would try to meet deadline.
skynet126 July 23rd, 2005, 07:40 AM too bad, guess all the people that want to use the airport this christmas will have o wait until next year, hopefully it be done next year too and not lagging behind schedule like the phillipine new terminal

Isan July 29th, 2005, 03:56 PM Airport opening moved back to 'next July at the latest'
AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK
After keeping mum on just how long it would be delayed, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra declared yesterday the opening of Suvarnabhumi international airport would be postponed to no later than July of next year.
The prime minister picked yesterday's visit to the airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phi district to announce the new schedule.
''After the assessment on the construction progress, the airport can be opened either in June or July 2006 at the latest,'' he said after chairing a committee responsible for the airport, including airport officials and construction firms.
''The delay is common for new airports. They cannot be opened on schedule,'' Mr Thaksin said. The delay has long been expected by officials and building firms given that work is behind schedule. One of the concerns has been the elevated road leading to the airport terminal which will only be completed by Feb 9 of next year, according to the prime minister.
Mr Thaksin had previously set Sept 29 this year as the launch date for the new airport. Then he retracted his statement, saying what he meant was the deadline for all construction jobs to be done.
After inspecting construction at the site, including work inside the terminal, at the concourse and on the conveyor belts for nearly two hours, Mr Thaksin said he was confident a substantial amount of work would be complete by Sept 29, but final touches on details before handing the project over to New Bangkok International Airport Co would take some time afterwards. He also went inside the departure terminal to see the check-in counters and the testing of the conveyor belts.
After the construction, the airport must transfer all systems from Don Muang airport, and it then needs a test-run and approval from the International Civil Aviation Organisation for commercial use.
When most construction projects are finished in the next two months, including runways, Mr Thaksin said he would be one of the passengers on a plane testing a landing on Sept 29 and then lead runners onto the runways in a marathon event to be organised that day.
The New Year countdown would also be held at the new airport, he said.
With the capacity to serve 45 million passengers, Suvarnabhumi, whose construction cost is almost 120 billion baht, will replace Don Muang and is touted to become the aviation hub of Southeast Asia, competing with Singapore, Malaysia and even Hong Kong.
It will be equipped with the controversial CTX 9000 bomb scanners. The first two of the 26 machines are due to arrive today .
Despite the delay, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said he was satisfied with the construction progress and said the prime minister had agreed to join monthly talks with airport officials and construction firms to resolve any problems going forward.
Key discussion points during the meeting at the airport site were the rising raw material costs mentioned by construction companies and the payment delay for work related to the luggage bomb detectors, said a source at the talks.
Mr Thaksin refused to help construction firms in terms of easing higher costs, saying they had to honour the agreements they had signed with the airport agency.
Thawatchai Suthiprapha, the project manager of ITO Joint Venture, the consortium building Suvarnabhumi, said he would hold talks with GE InVision on plans to install the CTX machines today.

Isan August 3rd, 2005, 01:53 AM Chainant to make airport a priority
WASSANA NANUAM
New Deputy Transport Minister Gen Chainant Charoensiri has pledged to speed up the construction of Suvarnabhumi airport and improve the transportation infrastructure in the deep South.
Gen Chainant, who tendered his resignation as Armed Forces Development Command chief on Monday, said he had initially accepted an offer from Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's for him to help with the airport project and development of the three southernmost provinces because he was highly experienced in that field.
When Mr Thaksin approached him, the prime minister had not said what position he would get, just that the job would be similar to what he had been doing.
``To be deputy transport minister and oversee Nong Ngu Hao [Suvarnabhumi] airport is a difficult task,'' Gen Chainant said. ``But, I'm confident I can do it.
``Working at the Armed Forces Development Command was very tough too. ``It's a surprise because I had never thought about becoming a cabinet member, but it's a good end to my official service.''
The general has developed close ties with the prime minister in the past year, accompanying Mr Thaksin and his team on every trip to the restive South looking at farming development and road projects.
He was a student in pre-cadet school class 5 student and classmate of Supreme Commander Gen Chaisit Shinawatra and former air force commander-in-chief ACM Kongsak Wanthana, and (like ACM Kongsak) was due to retire at the end of September.
It is widely accepted that Gen Chainant's resignation will allow his deputy, Lt-Gen Pornchai Kranlert, also a former pre-cadet school class 10 colleague of Mr Thaksin and tipped for promotion to full general rank in this month's military reshuffle, to step up.
Yesterday, Gen Chainant handed over his duties to Lt-Gen Pornchai. He said he regretted leaving before retirement, but he had a more important job to do and had been preparing Lt-Gen Pornchai to replace him since April.

hkskyline August 8th, 2005, 11:46 PM Thailand's Suvarnabhumi Airport Expected to Open by July 2006
BANGKOK, Aug 8 Asia Pulse - Bangkok's new international airport is expected to begin commercial operation by July 2006, the government said Friday.
The multi-billion-baht Suvarnabhumi Airport, which was initially slated to open this year, aims to establish Thailand as an air transport hub in Southeast Asia.
Located east of Bangkok in Bang Phli District, Suvarnabhumi will replace Bangkok's current international airport, commonly known as Don Muang Airport.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra recently pushed for the acceleration of the project saying the construction of the airport had been placed on the national agenda, according to a government statement.
The Prime Minister said the sooner the airport was completed, the sooner the country would benefit from its huge investment in the project.
More than Bt155 billion (US$3.76 billion) has been invested in the new airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport said last month.
The Prime Minister said the airport's passenger terminal complex, runways, and other major construction projects will be completed by 29 September, 2005, when Thai Airways International (SET:THAI) will land the first aircraft on the main eastern runway on a trial basis.
When completed, Suvarnabhumi Airport will be one of the most modern airports in the world, providing services for a large capacity of passengers and cargo.
Suvarnabhumi said it will accommodate up to 100 million passengers a year, 112 flights an hour, and more than six million tons of cargo.

Isan August 10th, 2005, 02:40 AM Authorities deny big runway cracks
[pe]
POST REPORTERS
Transport authorities strongly deny any runway at Suvarnabhumi airport has a serious crack and insist there are only minor cracks which are part of the construction process.
Representatives of the Engineering Institute of Thailand have inspected the airport and they back the authorities.
At Government House yesterday, Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal confirmed that there were only cracks on runway shoulders that engineers had made to fill with asphalt to prevent cracks in the concrete runway surface when adjoining new taxi-ways are built in the future.
The transport minister also quoted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as denying in the cabinet meeting yesterday that he had invited a team of US experts to examine any cracks on the runways of the new airport.
The report about serious cracks was untrue and New Bangkok International Airport Co (NBIA) would check where the report came from, Mr Pongsak said.
``Rumours are released to make foreigners lose confidence in our airport. As our airport is close to completion, rumours are released to delay the airport,'' said the minister.
Somchai Sawasdeepon, senior executive vice-president of Airports of Thailand Plc, explained yesterday that the construction process of the first two runways at Suvarnabhumi airport had been standard from the first stage of the ground improvement nine years ago.
He said as the airport was being built on a swampy land plot, sand and gravel were dumped on the old soil to press water out of it. The pressing process took a year and a half and the old soil subsided by 1.50m. Afterwards, runways, taxi-ways and aircraft parking lots were built on the soil.
Recently, more ground improvement work took place next to the West Runway to prepare for construction of the third runway and additional taxi-ways to be completed in the next four to five years. The same pressing process was repeated and naturally caused the minor cracks on the shoulder of the West Runway. The effect was expected and acceptable and would not affect the West Runway at all, Mr Somchai said.
The additional ground improvement was being carried out so that the West Runway would not have to be closed in order to pave the way for future runway and taxi-way expansion, he said.
hkskyline August 12th, 2005, 01:00 AM THAI PRESS: New Bangkok Airport To Start Ops In June
9 August 2005
BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--The new Bangkok International Airport Suvarnabhumi is expected to commence commercial operation in June next year, nine months behind its original schedule, The Nation reports, citing Deputy Transport Minister Chaiyanan Charoensiri.
The new airport was initially planned to open on September 28, but many of the projects have been delayed, particularly the installation of bomb-detecting baggage scanners, the paper says.
Alleged corruption in the purchase of the scanners has led to a parliamentary no-confidence motion against former Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, who survived the debate but was replaced in the latest cabinet reshuffle last week.

I don't think the baggage scanners system is the main or particular reason for the delay of the airport. The Nation only want to make the scanners system and airport delay to have a relation to each other. In fact, the equipment is already delivered to the airport and in the process of installation.
There are many things left to be done as you can see in Chad'd pictures.
Anyway, I always rely on the Nation's news only 70%.
Isan August 12th, 2005, 04:29 AM Airport opening moved back to 'next July at the latest'

Isan August 12th, 2005, 04:59 PM Authorities deny big runway cracks.
Published on August 12, 2005
‘Bangkok Post’ faces a fresh blast of political heat despite retraction. The government is considering suing the Bangkok Post over its front-page report about “cracks” along a runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport, despite the English-language daily retracting the story.
A source close to Transport Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said yesterday the minister was summoned by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra shortly after the report appeared in the Bangkok Post on Tuesday. At that meeting, the PM reportedly instructed the minister to consult his ministry’s lawyers and the Attorney General’s Office for possible legal action.
If the lawsuit goes ahead, New Bangkok International Airport will act as the plaintiff, the source said.
“The prime minister felt that the report caused serious damage to the country,” the source said.
Pongsak himself told a TV news host on Wednesday night the government was considering suing the Bangkok Post for damages. Bangkok Post news editors contacted by The Nation said they had heard the newspaper’s management was bracing for a lawsuit.
The legal threat is a new wave of apparent political pressure that has hit the Bangkok Post over the past few years. The paper is largely owned by the Central Group, which had a showdown with the Transport Ministry over a land-lease contract for its Lat Phrao shopping complex in 2002. The contract extension remains a contentious issue to this day.
Also in 2002, the Central Group fought off a takeover bid by a group of shareholders led by a business figure, a bitter battle that many Bangkok Post reporters thought stemmed from attempted political interference.
Early last year, Bangkok Post reporters decried the murky transfer of its editor Veera Prateep-chaikul, who was known to have been under pressure from the management following news reports critical of the prime minister.
On Wednesday, Thaksin lashed out at the Bangkok Post, branding the airport report a work of fiction that would be detrimental to the country’s image.
“The report said I hired US experts to check the cracks. I have no idea what that refers to,’’ he said.
“It added that the serious cracks were at the touchdown points. No planes will dare land at Suvarnabhumi Airport, fearing [as a result of the report] that they will crash.
“This is seriously damaging to the country. If the facts of a story are slightly wrong, it’s okay, but this is intentionally writing news as fiction.’’
On the same day, the Bangkok Post - on its front page - retracted the report, which quoted an aviation source as saying that US experts claimed the runway would have to be rebuilt because of serious cracks. The retraction said the report was clearly wrong, and the paper apologised to the government and airport authorities.
“A tour of the west runway of Suvarnabhumi Airport yesterday found no cracks in the middle of the runway as earlier reported by the Bangkok Post. There were small cracks on the shoulders. The aviation source who told the Post that US experts said the runway would have to be rebuilt because of serious cracks was clearly wrong,” the Bangkok Post said, adding that it deeply regretted the error.
Isan August 12th, 2005, 09:44 PM More airport access roads planned
AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK
The Transport Ministry is planning to build more access roads to the new Suvarnabhumi airport in anticipation of increasing traffic in the long term.
Relevant agencies will study plans unveiled by Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal during his visit yesterday to the airport, still under construction in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district.
The Highways Department and the State Railway of Thailand will be responsible for studying the feasibility of building a new, 28km-long road along the express rail line from Bangkok's Phaya Thai area to the airport via Lad Krabang district.
City hall and the Highways Department will together look into a plan to expand one more road to the airport from the Onnuj area.
SRT governor Chitsanti Dhanasobhon said he was concerned about limited space along the railway line to the airport from the Klong Tan area. That could make it difficult to build a new road, he said.
The ministry has already prepared three key access roads to the airport _ via the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway, the Bang Na-Trat Highway, and Onnuj road.
The new international airport has been rescheduled for opening by July next year. The contractors are trying to complete their construction works as soon as possible to prepare for testing.
Surajit Surapolchai, a senior Airports of Thailand official and deputy director of the airport project, said the construction was slightly behind schedule, but he was confident civil engineering work would be completed by December.
He said there were concerns about eight projects, including the work on the terminal building, concourse and conveyor belt system, information technology system and car parking. Mr Pongsak assured that the airport would open around the middle of next year as planned.
hkskyline August 16th, 2005, 11:23 PM Thai government agencies sue paper over airport article
BANGKOK, Aug 16 (AFP) - Two Thai government agencies have filed a criminal lawsuit against the Bangkok Post newspaper, alleging an article about cracks on the runways of the new Bangkok international airport was defamatory.
Airports of Thailand company and the New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA) cited a front-page Post article last week alleging there were cracks large enough "to sink the nose wheel of an aircraft."
The firms filed a joint suit Monday against the Post Publishing company and Post editor Kowit Sanandang, the English-language daily said.
A conviction for criminal libel carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine of 200,000 baht (4,900 dollars).
Airports of Thailand on Tuesday confirmed the lawsuit. A Bangkok court will hear the case beginning on September 19.
The Post said NBIA was separately preparing to file a civil suit seeking about 1.0 billion baht (24.5 million dollars) in compensation.
The Post had quoted an anonymous source saying a team of US aviation experts, hired by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to investigate the airport, recommended both runways be rebuilt because of cracks.
It issued a retraction the next day after a tour of the western runway at Suvarnabhumi airport, under construction in Bangkok's eastern outskirts, showed no cracks in the middle of the runway but small cracks on the shoulders.
The airport's construction manager, John Murray, last week said cracks on runway shoulders were expected and resulted from improvement works to drain the area, a former swamp.
Post rival The Nation described the lawsuit as "a rare and staggering move by the government against the media."
But lawyer Somsak Toraksa told the paper that the suit was filed because the report "was published in English with a worldwide circulation and it harms the reputation of the Suvarnabhumi airport."
If successful, the airport companies want the Post to pay for the publishing of the verdict in major newspapers worldwide and to have it broadcast on Thai and foreign television channels for 15 consecutive days.
The Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) said the suits marked a trend by the government to intimidate its critics.
"It piles on pressure and very blatantly signals a suggestion that this government is not even tolerant of suggestions or criticism," SEAPA executive director Roby Alampay told AFP.
Several suits worth hundreds of millions of dollars filed by companies founded by Thaksin and a former cabinet minister, against a media activist and three Thai-language newspapers, are already before the courts.
Isan August 25th, 2005, 02:40 AM World leaders to be invited to airport opening
Published on Aug 24 , 2005
Thailand will extend an invitation to world leaders to attend next June's inauguration of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, in a ceremony the government hopes will be reminiscent of the 2003 Apec meeting.
A source said the event would also mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's coronation.
The government plans to dispatch more than 1,000 invitations all over the world by the end of the year.
The government is dividing the guest list into different categories, with leaders from European countries and the United States included among countries politically important to Thailand.
Leaders from China and Japan will be grouped with those countries having strong economic relations with the Kingdom.
The government will also welcome honoured Royal Family members as guests of HM the King.
A source at the Transport Ministry close to a working group for the event said the government had informed all relevant agencies to prepare for the celebrations.
Thai Airways International (THAI), Airports of Thailand (AOT), the Transport Ministry, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and various security agencies will be the main organisers of the event.
The source said: "It will be even bigger than Apec." Bangkok hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in October 2003. Participants included US President George W Bush.
The source said the government wanted to show off the new international airport to world leaders. The airport will help Bangkok realise its goal of becoming a regional aviation hub that will serve the increasing numbers of air travellers and promote economic growth.
The country will also be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the coronation of HM the King, who will preside over the inauguration ceremony.
"Next year, the country will hold its biggest event ever. All of the presidents and other country leaders will be guests of the government, while members of the Royal Family will be special guests of His Majesty," said the source.
An AOT source said security measures were being prepared, but he declined to disclose any details.
AOT reported that its second Bangkok airport was ready for technical testing, including aircraft landings and take-offs. The company will hold its first demonstration on September 29.
Thaksin will preside over the initial trial flight. He and his entourage will be passengers aboard a THAI Airbus A340-600 departing from Don Muang Airport that morning. The aircraft will fly over the Central Plains and land on Suvarnabhumi Airport's eastern runway.
The group will be processed through Immigration and Customs and out into the arrival area. They will then return to the aircraft, undergoing standard boarding procedures, and then fly back to Don Muang.
Meanwhile - despite the government having recently stated that the baggage-handling system's installation would be delayed until February because of the CTX explosives-scanners row - the AOT board yesterday expressed confidence that the airport would be completed on schedule.
Acting president Bancha Patanaporn said that to celebrate completion on September 29, a marathon and a motorcycle race would both be held at the site.
He said overall construction was now 90-per-cent complete and that installation of the explosives-scanning machines would be finished tomorrow.
The board will present a progress report to Thaksin today.

Isan August 28th, 2005, 08:48 AM Trial landings for both runways ordered by PM
September tests 'to prove readiness'
By Amornrat Mahitirook
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has ordered trial aircraft landings next month on both runways of the new Suvarnabhumi airport, to show that it will be ready to open next year.
The landings will take place on the East and West runways, instead of only the East runway as originally scheduled.
A source from the Suvarnabhumi airport development committee, chaired by the prime minister, said Mr Thaksin told Thursday's committee meeting the trial landings should be made on Sept 29. The aim is to prove that the airport will soon be ready to open, as the construction of both runways has been completed.
The prime minister has assigned Srisook Chandrangsu, permanent secretary for transport and also the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) chairman, to negotiate with Airbus Industrie Co and ask it to send its new Airbus A380 _ the world's largest passenger plane _ to take part in the landing tests, the source said.
The source said Mr Srisook has coordinated with those responsible for the runway opening and he hoped Airbus Industrie Co would cooperate with the request since tests could be a form of PR initiative for its new aircraft.
Srisak Wongsongsarn, senior vice-president (administration) of the state-owned Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Company and a director of the airport project, confirmed that the new airport's air traffic control system would be ready for the Sept 29 landing tests.
He said the installation of the air traffic control system has been completed on both runways and holding the landing tests on both would not be a problem.
The most important tests would be those on the Instrument Landing Systems which must be precise and done at each of the takeoff and touchdown points for about five days, he said.
Seah Tianho, an engineer in charge of the construction of Suvarnabhumi airport's third runway, said trial landings would be made in the northern part of the airport's West runway, not the southern part where a land-strengthening process was underway.
Unofficial talks by concerned parties were expected early next week to find ways to prevent the land-strengthening work on the third runway from affecting the opening of the West runway for trial landings, he said.
An AoT source said the Suvarnabhumi airport development committee has ordered rules on payments for the airport project's contractors to be amended by the end of this month, to ensure the contractors could be paid from Sept 1 and help ease the liquidity problems some are experiencing. ''It is expected all contractors which have requested payment will gradually be paid. Now, the firm must pay almost 10 billion baht to the contractors, including between three and four billion baht to ITO Joint Venture [the airport builder],'' the source said.

Isan September 8th, 2005, 01:33 AM All set for new Bangkok airport inaugural flight
BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) – Air traffic control services at Bangkok's new international airport, Suvarnabhumi, are now ready for the arrival of the inaugural flight later this month, the president of the state-controlled company AEROTHAI (Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd), Priti Hetrakul, said here on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be aboard the first aircraft to land.
His Airbus 340-600 is due to arrive at 09;39 a.m.on September 29.
A planeload of journalists and other media representatives will follow in a Boeing 747.
The director of the Bangkok Airport Air Traffic Control Department, Pilot Officer Preecha Praedum, said that the aircraft in the inaugural flight would either circle the airport area for about 20 minutes, or the planes would fly to the northern province of Phitsanulok, which would take around 30 minutes before landing at the new airport.
He said AEROTHAI has prepared 10 air traffic control tower staff, 20 personnel for the radar control room, and 30 technicians and engineers to ensure a smooth first flight.
He said commercial operators would use the Suvarnabhumi Airport, while chartered flights and military aircraft would continue to use Bangkok's existing Don Muang Airport. (TNA) –E003

Isan September 15th, 2005, 08:00 AM Thai Airways International prepares for First Two Aircraft Landings at new Suvarnabhumi Airport
14 September 2005
Thai Airways International is preparing for its newest Airbus A340-600 aircraft to fly His Excellency Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's Prime Minister and members of the Thai Cabinet, together with members of the Managing Committee for the Development at Suvarnabhumi Airport, as the first aircraft to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport. In addition, THAI has arranged to utilize one of its Boeing 747-400 aircraft to fly more than 400 guests and members of the press to the new airport.
What will be the first Technical Test Flight to Suvarnabhumi Airport is scheduled to take place 29 September 2005.
In preparation of landing the two aircraft at Suvarnabhumi Airport, THAI has arranged to migrate Ground Handling Equipment, such the Air Conditioning Tractor (ACT), Ground Power Unit (GPU), Air Starter Unit (ASU), etc. from Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) to Suvarnabhumi Airport for the First Technical Test Flight. In addition, THAI has prepared for its Ground Customer Services staff to test the check-in systems and facilitate all passengers re-boarding for the return flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport. THAI has also prepared technicians and engineering staff as well as aircraft maintenance equipment to support this historical event.
As the 29th September 2005 will mark the first landing of THAI's aircraft at Suvarnabhumi Airport, THAI has designed a special boarding pass and souvenir for all passengers traveling on this special flight.

hkskyline September 15th, 2005, 11:44 PM Thai Min: New Bangkok Airport To Open Between Jun, Oct'06
14 September 2005
BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Thai Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said Thursday that Bangkok's new international airport will open for commercial operations in June of next year at the earliest and October at the latest.
The exact timing of the opening will depend on progress in inspections by the International Civil Aviation Organization, Pongsak said on the sidelines of a seminar on business opportunities in the area surrounding the new airport.
All major construction work at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed and ready for a test run with the first technical flights scheduled for Sept. 29, he said.
"After the first technical flights, it will take several months to check all the systems at the airport to ensure that everything meets the required international standards," Pongsak told reporters.
The government had previously set the opening date for the new airport on Sept. 29. The commercial opening has been pushed back due to delays in construction works. Several operating systems and a surrounding road network also haven't been completed.
Thai Airways International PCL (THAI.TH), the national carrier, said in a statement late Wednesday that it has prepared two aircraft to fly Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, cabinet members, and 400 honored guests on the test flights to land at the new airport on Sept. 29.
Pongsak said the government plans to promote the new airport as a regional hub for air traffic, for both passengers and cargo.
"We have the geographical advantage to become the regional aviation hub. We will try our best to move toward that direction," said Pongsak.
Suvarnabhumi Airport is designed to accommodate up to 45 million passengers per year, 76 flights an hour, and more than 3 million tons of cargo per year.
The new airport, 45 kilometers east of Bangkok, will take over much of the traffic from the city's existing Bangkok International Airport in Don Muang just north of the capital, which has run out of room to expand after several upgrades in the past three decades.
Isan September 18th, 2005, 09:56 AM Landing test activities cancelled
Ministry blames security concerns
http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/180905_news04.jpg
Security concerns have forced the Transport Ministry to cancel all activities planned at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Sept 29, when Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is scheduled to lead a high-profile delegation on the first flight to land at the new airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district. Due to concerns that it may generate unnecessary additional work for authorities responsible for security, Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal decided to call off a planned mini-marathon event, which was last month announced as one of the highlights. Mr Thaksin was expected to lead the runners on to the runway after touching down during a landing test. There were concerns that runners may not respect access rules on the site and that the event may cause a mess.
Mr Thaksin is due to arrive at the airport on an Airbus and will then watch from the passenger building a second Boeing plane with members of the press on board touch down. Only the eastern runway will be used, the minister said.
Following the landing test, Suvarnabhumi will remain closed to the public. The airport is expected to be officially opened in the middle of next year, once all systems have been tested and approved by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Sept 29 was originally set by the government as the date the airport would open its gates to passengers, but a construction delay forced the administration to change the plan. Mr Pongsak said the airport would demonstrate the CTX 9000 luggage bomb detectors on Sept 29. All of the 26 machines have been installed at the airport. The detectors caused a major furore over allegations of graft due to excessive costs. This led to former transport minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit being replaced by Mr Pongsak in a cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Pongsak pressed airport agency officials for improved measures to prevent further damage at the airport site, where several items had been stolen, including electric cables and wire, steel and cement. He called for urgent action to find those responsible for the thefts.

Ministry blames security concerns
400 police to guard airport test flights
Thaksin satisfied with preparations
MANOP THIP-OSOD AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK
About 400 police officers will provide security for Thursday's takeoff and landing trials at Suvarnabhumi airport. Pol Col Rattana Palachan, chief of Samut Prakan's Bang Phli police station, said the 400 officers from Samut Prakan will also receive support from immigration, tourist and Special Branch Bureau police.
The officers will inspect the airport again tomorrow, on the eve of Thursday's test flights.
Police will stand guard on airport runways, in the passenger terminal and other vulnerable areas to screen visitors and watch for suspicious packages. They will be assisted by police dogs, he said.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and cabinet members will be in attendance for the tests at the new airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district.
The prime minister inspected the airport yesterday and said he was satisfied with preparations for the event on Thursday.
Mr Thaksin said airport construction will be finished in December. Tests will follow, with the new Bangkok airport ready to begin operating in June next year. He declined to set an exact opening date.
After the first year of operation, a high-speed railway from the capital and Bangkok's southern ring road will be completed to serve the airport, he said, and the government will consider expanding the airport to serve higher air traffic volumes.
Suvarnabhumi is expected to run at full capacity within three years of opening, serving 45 million passengers a year. Don Muang airport currently serves 38 million passengers a year.
Mr Thaksin said he was confident Suvarnabhumi airport will become a regional hub of air transport due to Thailand's location. More flights will also land here because of the government's policy to open up Thailand's skies for commercial flights, as well as increasing tourist and business passengers from China, he added.
A million people fly from China to Thailand annually, a figure that will rise to four million by 2010, Mr Thaksin said.
The runways and the domestic terminal at Don Muang airport will continue to operate to serve VIP and private flights, as well as emergency landings, he said.

Isan September 28th, 2005, 11:19 PM Airlines left out in the cold
Published on September 29, 2005
More than 200 guests will accompany Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his Cabinet today on their short trip across Bangkok as part of the inaugural flight to Suvarna-bhumi International Airport.
But many airline operators are seething because the only industry executives to be favoured with VIP tickets were those from Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways.
They have complained that they were left out in the cold by Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) and the government.
Soonthorn Suree, a director of Airline Operational Committee, which represents about 80 airlines, said executives of most airlines were not invited on the inaugural flight, from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi.
“We don’t understand why officials from most of the airlines have not been invited even through they are going to be big customers of the new airport, said Soonthorn, who is also manager of Emirates’ operations in Thailand and the region. “I believe the only airlines to be invited were THAI and Bangkok Airways while the executives of 80 other airlines have been waiting to see the new airport.”
Yongyut Lujintanont, marketing manager in Thailand and Burma for Cathay Pacific, said none of the airline’s representatives would be taking part in the technical flight because Cathay was not on the guest list.
British Airways and Qantas have also been snubbed.
Tassapol Bijleveld, chief executive of Thai AirAsia, part owned by Shin Corp, was given a VIP ticket for the flight but said he had other commitments.
The VIP list on Thaksin’s flight includes Cabinet members, the airport’s development committee, the heads of several Transport Ministry departments, big-time contractors such as Premchai Karnasuta of Italian-Thai Plc and Pliew Trivisavavej of Ch Karnchang Plc, and representatives of the ITO.
Other operators of the new airport make up the rest of the list, such as representatives of PTT and Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services. Top military brass are also on the list.
Banharn Silapa-archa, leader of the Chat Thai Party, has agreed to join the inaugural flight, but Democrats Suthep Thaugsuban and Pradit Phathraprasit, who used to oversee the Transport Ministry, declined the invitation.
An Airbus 340-400 is due to take off from Don Muang at 8.39am and circle around for a bit before landing at Suvarnabhumi at 9.19am. A Boeing 747-400 will follow with other guests, the media and other senior officials.
When the planes finally land at the new airport, 1,000 guests will take part in a celebration of the first technical flight and Thaksin will hold his weekly news conference.
Serirat Prasutanond, executive vice-president for special affairs at AOT, tried to play down the complaint of the snubbed airlines by saying that the agency would organise more demonstration trips later.
“AOT plans to invite other airlines to attend further demonstrations. We expect to do more than 100 flights or more,” he said.
Suvarnabhumi Airport will be fully operational by June at the soonest or October next year at the latest, as preparations are under way to meet all international safety standards.
Albert Tjoeng, IATA’s corporate communications manager for Asia Pacific, said Suvarnabhumi could be a major catalyst for tourism and the economy. He said the IATA was committed to working with the Transport Ministry and AOT to make the dream a reality.
The association has made recommendations that have been accepted, such as having two runways instead of one, and building a terminal with a handling capacity of 45 million passengers instead of 30 million. But he said dialogue must continue to bring about more improvements. This includes expanding the baggage-screening system, expanding the retail concession layout and adding more gates.
Tjoeng said the IATA believed the new airport should begin commercial operations only when it is ready. There should be at least six months of testing before commercial operations commence.
Difficulties encountered by the new airports in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong are constant reminders of the need to thoroughly test everything before the official opening.

Bring on Changi, says Bangkok
Dogged by delays, still to prove itself, new airport may still offer formidable competition
Tor Ching Li
chingli@newstoday.com.sg
IN the tussle to be acknowledged as the region's air hub, Sept 29 is a date pencilled firmly in the diaries of Singapore and Thailand. Today, Changi International Airport gets a glimpse of New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA), which could be its biggest rival in the days ahead.
.
With works one year behind schedule, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is sticking to his deadline for the NBIA launch through a ceremonious, face-saving measure.
.
He will be flying into the NBIA — named Suvarnabhumi, meaning "Golden Land" in Thai — from the existing Don Muang airport for a test landing with an entourage of top government officials and journalists.
.
The Thai premier is pushing his point that the NBIA will take the current air traffic competition with regional rivals Singapore and Malaysia up a steep notch — finally.
.
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) recommended at least six months of testing before commercial operations can start at the US$4 billion ($6.8 billion) airport.
.
The mammoth project on a vast plot of land called Nong Ngu Hao (meaning cobra swamp) has already missed two initial deadlines: In 1990 and 2000. And yet it is not something to be scoffed at.
.
Upon completion, the NBIA will be 10 times the size of Don Muang airport, boast an initial capacity of 45 million passengers — compared to Don Muang's 36 million — and 3.3 million tonnes of cargo a year.
.
These specifications already give it a one-up against Changi in terms of capacity and it is nearly three times larger in total land area.
.
At 563,000 sq m, the NBIA's passenger terminal will also be the world's largest single building. Its 132m high control tower is also designed to be the tallest in the world. Changi's trademark control tower stands at 80m.
.
Changi's two terminals can currently handle a total of 44 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo a year. However, when the $1.5 billion Terminal Three is completed by 2008, the total capacity of Changi will tally 64 million.
.
The Thai government plans to expand the annual passenger capacity to 50 million by 2011 — and eventually to cater to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo.
.
Said Mr Nicholas Ionides, Asia editor of Flight International: "Bangkok has always been Singapore's closest competitor."
.
Or vice-versa.
.
Last year Bangkok ranked as the 14th largest airport in the world based on passenger traffic with a total of 38 million.
.
Singapore ranked as the 26th largest airport in the world with 30.3 million passengers.
.
For the first six months of this year, however, Singapore closed the gap with passenger traffic of 15.4 million and an annual growth rate of 7.2 per cent. Bangkok had 18.4 million passengers at a growth rate of 3.3 per cent.
.
Said Mr Rohan Suppiah, OCBC investment research manager: "Bangkok could pose a serious threat as it could be seen as an inherently more interesting stopover destination than Singapore, but there are other factors to consider, such as pricing and turnaround time, which are unknown factors for NBIA at this point in time."
.
Other factors bugging the local Thai authorities are the lack of public transport to the NBIA, which is a two-hour drive from the Bangkok city centre.
.
A government economic think-tank has suggested a new expressway to downtown Bangkok, a light rail link to the city and 10 new bus routes. The US$3.3 billion proposal also includes a five-km zone around the airport to include industrial commercial, residential and recreation areas, such as parks for tourists on stopover to enjoy.
.
Mr Ionides said: "Air traffic won't increase just because you have a shiny new airport. People have to want to come because of the country as a destination. Airlines will stop over based on the geographical location. Both Singapore and Bangkok have excellent geographical locations. But Bangkok might have the advantage of having more natural attractions and beach resorts.
.
Senior dealing director at Phillip Securities Gabriel Yap said that Singapore was going in the right direction in its bid to become a global city.
.
Singapore aims to increase tourist arrivals from its current 8 million a year to 12 million over the next five years, while Thailand envisions attracting 20 million tourists by 2010.
.
Mr Yap said: "The NBIA may be bigger but airports are not just about physical capacity, but logistics and management too. These are areas in which Changi has proven itself."

Isan September 29th, 2005, 07:59 PM SUVARNABHUMI’S SOFT LAUNCH: Airport passes ‘test’
Published on September 30, 2005
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/images_p1/pic-20050929-2227.jpg
Thaksin dodges tough questions as controversy-plagued facility is unveiled to the world with gala ceremony
Suvarnabhumi Inter-national Airport passed another significant milestone in its controversial history yesterday when its inaugural test flight - which Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra turned into a major publicity stunt - landed safely.
The “soft launch” of the incomplete airport, plagued by massive corruption charges and arguably the world’s longest-running project of its kind, reportedly cost taxpayers in the vicinity of Bt10 million.
When asked by a BBC reporter why the government had to organise yesterday’s event to “test” the airport now, Thaksin replied: “I didn’t expect this sort of question from the BBC.”
The plane carrying Thaksin and an entourage of 200 guests left Don Muang airport early yesterday morning and touched down at the new airport at 9.19am. Another plane carrying local and international media landed at 10.35am at the airport, which was first conceived in 1960.
The airport will not be opened for commercial services until at least the middle of next year, but yesterday’s symbolic flights served as a useful publicity tool to show the world that the government is doing its best to avoid further delays.
Thaksin had intended the airport to be open yesterday, but construction delays and corruption scandals meant that target could not be achieved.
Reporters were impressed by the airport’s elegant design and state-of-the-art technology, which is expected to place Suvarnabhumi among the world’s top airports.
The government hosted yesterday’s event against a backdrop of negative publicity caused by the Bt150-billion project being marred by a plethora of problems, the latest of which was the alleged irregularities surrounding the procurement of 26 bomb-detection machines worth Bt2 billion.
Despite these difficulties, Suvarnabhumi looks magnificent - even futuristic - with its multi-story shining steel beams and glass walls key elements of its design.
It looks set to become a regional aviation hub due to its central location, huge terminal capacity and the government’s push for open-sky policies with a number of countries.
“While a lot of work still has to be done, the airport is visually stunning. It also has the world’s biggest single passenger terminal at 500,000 square metres,” said Andrew Drysdale, regional vice president of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
IATA groups together 217 airlines worldwide.
With a single terminal of that size - equivalent to 10 large shopping complexes - Suvarnabhumi is comparable to London’s Heathrow airport, which is building its fifth terminal, and Singapore’s Changi airport, which already has three terminals and is building a new low-cost terminal.
Don Muang airport currently handles about 38 million passengers per year, compared to Changi’s 32 million. All of Don Muang’s traffic will be transferred to Suvarnabhumi, which will have an initial capacity of 45 million passengers and three million tonnes of cargo a year.
Thaksin said the government spent a lot of money on yesterday’s publicity stunt because he believed it was important to expedite the project to avoid further delays and the loss of economic and business opportunities. Yesterday’s event will encourage all parties concerned to concentrate on completing the project as soon as possible, he said.
“We also want to inform the world that we’re about to open the new airport,” he added.
Thaksin attributed previous delays to the airport to a lack of political stability that had resulted in frequent policy changes concerning the project.
Thaksin also plans to hold a New Year’s Eve celebration at the airport and a national photo contest to select the best pictures of the airport for use in promotional postcards.
Drysdale said it would take at least six months to test various facilities at the airport once all the construction and interior design work was fully completed.
To facilitate the airport’s position as a regional aviation hub, Thaksin said he had asked airlines attached to the Star Alliance to reschedule flights arriving at the airport to suit transit passengers.
Thai Airways International is a Star Alliance partner.

Isan September 29th, 2005, 08:41 PM Thaksin on lucky flight to boost Bangkok's new airport
http://sg.yimg.com/xp/afp/20050929/1561586117.jpg
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra flew into Bangkok's new international airport on a symbolic test flight at exactly 9:19 am, an auspicious time in Thai culture.
The landing at the 3.7-billion-dollar Suvarnabhumi International Airport was as much a face-saving gesture as a publicity tool after Thaksin had publicly vowed the airport would open for business on September 29.
The airport is not expected to open for commercial traffic until mid-2006 at the earliest, and the top airline industry group has called for at least six months of testing.
But Thailand hopes that it will eventually surpass regional rivals Malaysia and Singapore as Southeast Asia's center for international air traffic.
"I am confident that our airport is better than the others, and that this will become a regional hub because it is centrally located in a large population area with a big economy and a developed tourism industry," Thaksin told reporters after the Thai Airways Airbus 340-600 landed.
"I am so happy for all Thais. We have waited for 45 years, and now we have a very new modern airport which is ready to welcome the global tourists to Thailand," he said.
With gates designed to resemble traditional Thai homes, the terminal's finishing touches were literally taped together for the event.
Carpets were laid with duct tape, and paper signs were stuck to walls to point out the toilets. Cables were still exposed under the ceiling, and construction workers stood near the runway as Thaksin landed.
Thaksin said he was confident that Suvarnabhumi would open to commercial traffic by mid-2006, in time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's coronation in June.
Other officials have said September 2006 was a likelier date.
"The construction of Suvarnabhumi will be fully completed by March, and then we will map out a timetable for moving from Don Muang airport to here," Thaksin said.
The existing Don Muang airport will become an aircraft repair facility, and the adjacent military air base will remain open, Thaksin said.
Suvarnabhumi is designed to handle 45 million passengers a year, compared to 36 million at the existing airport, and could eventually expand to 100 million.
Even this symbolic landing is a much-delayed start to the airport 45 years in the making.
The airport was first meant to open in 1990, then in 2000, but was delayed after the government decided it would handle both domestic and international flights, not simply international ones as consultants had proposed.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned Wednesday that the new airport should undergo at least six months of testing before opening, and said a special committee created to clear the way for its opening has yet to meet.
"As the ministry of transport consultative committee has still yet to meet since it was set up in May, it is imperative that the (committee) meets urgently," IATA said in a statement.
When it does open, the new airport is expected to transform an economically vital region for Thailand.
The government has laid out a 3.3 billion dollar scheme to overhaul infrastructure around the airport, including a new light rail line to Bangkok.
Planned new roads will link the city and the airport to the beach resort of Pattaya, the Leam Chabang deep seaport, as well as the eastern seaboard that is home to much of the kingdom's auto, semiconductor, and oil industries.
The tourist industry also hopes Suvarnabhumi will help boost arrivals from 11.7 million last year to 20 million by 2010.

vincent October 1st, 2005, 10:50 AM i think the world's largest single passenger terminal building is disputable. HK's figure is showing 570000, a bit higher than 56 something. Beijing also claim their new terminal will be bigger than hk's.

570000 sq meter. Also, this figure is NOT including the recent expansion of the shopping mall area in the east hall.

I still think this new Bangkok airport will be the largest terminal. Hong Kong one is the largest terminal with a "single roof" but size wise it will be smaller.
Beijing claims that when its Terminal 3 is completed in 2008 it will be the largest in the world. So we will have to see its too early to tell.
zergcerebrates October 2nd, 2005, 12:00 PM The new Thai livery is so sharp. Very eye catching.

I am pretty sure the title for both is like "World's largest SINGLE passenger terminal", in this case, both hk's and bangkok's is "single". So there are no difference in terms of category, purely size.

According to Guiness Book of World Records HK airport is not 570,000sq.m
"Largest Airport Terminal
The Hong Kong International Airport passenger terminal building is 1.3 km. (0.8 miles) long and covers 550,000 sq. m. (135.9 acres). The design incorporates a Y-shaped concourse and is the world's largest single airport building.
Just the baggage hall of this gargantuan building is as big as the Yankee Stadium in New York (it could hold five Boeing 747s parked wing tip to wing tip). Served by 48 aircraft parking stands with boarding gates and air bridges, the terminal has a design capacity of 45 million passengers a year, arriving on 460 flights every day. There are 3 km (1.8 miles) of moving walkways, 55,000 m² (13.59 acres) of glass cladding and around 117,000 m² (28.9 acres) of carpeting."

55000 is definitely old figure. As i mentioned earlier, this figure does not include the new extension of shopping mall section (sky mart) in the east hall of passenger terminal. Plus, there are plans to widen the current terminal building by 4 curved roof. (2 on the north side, 2 on the south).
Anyone, all these is getting confusing. I believe the current Guangzhou terminal got a similar title.
So Bangkok vs HK vs GZ vs Beijing (2008) :)

vincent October 3rd, 2005, 09:04 AM yea, i think small difference in size really doesn't matter. Interior design, the atmosphere the architect wants to present to the visitor, the overall layout of the terminal is much more important. Sorry to rain on your parade, but IMHO I don't see that happening. For one, the waiting rooms are not carpeted and the chairs are not upholstered if I see that picture right - cold atmosphere, not cozy, no bonus points from passengers. (By the way, not only Hong Kong but Singapore is also carpeted throughout and Seoul has wooden floors, both cozier than tiles.) Further, Hong Kong has actually planned space for shops after security/passport control. In Suvarnabhumi the shops are squeezed-stuffed-squashed into Concourse D (the long transverse behind the main terminal building) which also has to accommodate waiting rooms. Less circulation space, a more crowded feeling, no bonus points from passengers. (By the way, the original plans by Jahn saw large shopping plazas at both four-way concourse intersections - who chopped them out and why?)

point taken...
these are the pictures taken when none of the interior work has begun...
i believe there will be more additions to the terminal over the next few months...
many of the deco are just there temporarily for the test flight day... i believe there will be more changes coming up...
in another word, all that you see is completed terminal building construction works but none of the interior work has actually begun.

KENDO October 12th, 2005, 03:23 PM New Bangkok Airport To Open In June 2006
September 29, 2005
http://news.airwise.com/story/view/1127998126.html
Wednesday October 12, 2005
Bangkok's new airport will be ready by June next year, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Thursday at the "soft opening" of a project marred by graft scandals, delays and design problems.
Thaksin, joined by an entourage of ministers, VIP guests and journalists, flew into the USD$3.7 billion Suvarnabhumi International Airport two years after his government had pledged it would be ready to handle 45 million travellers a year.
"We will commercially open around the end of June. That is the plan," Thaksin told 1,000 guests at a ceremony televised nationwide from the airport built on a swamp about 25 km (15 miles) east of the city.
Suvarnabhumi, touted as a rival to world-class airports in Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, will replace the ageing Don Muang Airport, Asia's second busiest airport last year after Tokyo's Haneda, handling some 38 million passengers.
Covering 3,200 hectares (7,900 acres) and boasting the world's tallest control tower and two runways, Suvarnabhumi will be the largest in Asia with a capacity eventually doubling to 100 million passengers.
But controversy has dogged the new airport which has had many false starts since it was first proposed more than 40 years ago.
Allegations of corruption, denied by the government, have swirled around the purchase of 26 bomb-sniffing baggage scanners.
The opposition Democrat Party, which labelled the ceremony a publicity stunt and refused an invitation to attend, has published a booklet listing the graft allegations. "The Suvarnabhumi project should be the pride and joy of the country, but the corruption elements bring shame to it," party executive Sirichok Sopa told the ThaiDay newspaper.
"We do not want the public to be misled into forgetting".
But there was no such talk at Suvarnabhumi, where Thaksin pronounced his satisfaction as he toured the massive steel-and-glass building that resembles a long, tubed pastry.
The event, which included a flypast by Air Force F-16 fighters, was necessary to prod officials and contractors to complete the airport as quickly as possible, Thaksin said.
"Many people are competing to be the hub for Asia and we can't wait," he said of Thailand's bid to become a regional air hub for tourist and business travellers.
"If we didn't set this date then it would slip further and cost the country more," Thaksin said, playing down the concerns of foreign airlines who fear the airport will be overwhelmed when it finally opens.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), an airline lobby group, says the airport must double its 51 gates, only five of them for the new superjumbo Airbus A380.
IATA, which also wants more luggage scanners and fewer security checkpoints to avoid flight delays, says it has tried to meet airport authorities since May to talk abut its concerns, but without success.
Thaksin said a firm opening date would be set next month after which the government would consult with airlines.

I was wondering why the lights were like that... they seem so exposed, and so cheap. and they look sort of retarded the way they're not long strips running the entire length of each beam.

Your friend is wrong. The blue lights for the supertrusses are in fact blue fluorescent tubes, not neon. There is a thin blue line at the wingtip edge, which is neon. There has never been fiberoptic lighting in the roof at any stage of the project.

Those aren't neon lights either. They are custom-designed T5 fluorescent light fixtures. The bulbs are hidden by a larger translucent white tube. In between the translucent portions are clear tubes. The electrical raceway and tube straps are all stainless steel. It is hard to tell from the above photo, but I think the fixture details and overall lighting effect came out very well.
I guess everyone can decide for themselves once the airport opens.
And the original design here was not fiber optics either, but fluorscents in a different pattern. The only fiber optic lighting from the original design was for lighting the signage. The signage is now lit by static white LEDs.

The only thing I don't like are the trees..... at least those trees in the pic, they seem so out of place.
Other than that, this is a beautiful airport.

Opening may be put off again
27 October 2005
Bangkok Post
The opening of Suvarnabhumi airport could be further postponed until September next year due to delays in the information management system installation.
A transport source said the possibility was discussed at a meeting of the Suvarnabhumi airport management and development committee, chaired by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, yesterday.
Deputy Transport Minister Chainant Charoensiri told the meeting the development and installation of the airport information management system (AIMS) was well behind schedule, the source said.
That could affect the opening of the new Bangkok airport, which the government has already put off from September this year to June next year.
The information management system was the heart of the airport's operation. Developers needed three more months to ensure the utmost readiness of the airport before its opening, the source said.
Mr Thaksin admitted yesterday the AIMS was delayed, but said contractors insisted it could be accelerated to meet the June deadline. Gen Chainant said the AIMS was a major concern as the software was still being written.
Mosaic October 27th, 2005, 02:05 PM Anyway, I am sure that Thai government doesn't let it more delay. I am sure that it will be opened on June 2006 as schedule. because any delay would affect Thai economy directly and Government's image in the eye of beholders so Government won't let it happens for sure.

UMD November 6th, 2005, 01:27 PM I am so glad that they don't carpet this airport. The carpet at Dong Muang smells big time and it is getting worse.
Maybe it is because it is not yet open, but the interior pictures that I saw from the other thread (taken during the technical testing) showed the interior to be a bid brownish and not as bright as I would have expected. I hope this is only the quality of the picture and not the quality of the cheap granite or marble used for the terminal. However, this is a great achievement for BKK to have a new International airport. Now, please open this airport soon and maintain it this way.

what you see in those photos aren't 100% complete yet
there's still a lot of interior, lighting works and many decorations here and there... all waiting to be done
in fact, none of the interior work has actually begun when the photos were taken (30 Sept 2005).
they will clean the canvas and glass windows once all of the heavy / dirty works close to the airport terminal are completed.
construction of the 3rd runway is going on hence the dust / dirt. (the first 2 runways are finished)
from my understanding, they won't carpet the whole airport because the this airport uses under-floor coolin system. probably only in transit lounge, check-in area, gates, duty-free sales area...
the quality of the some of the photos don't really do justice to the airport. when you see it with your own eyes, it looks a lot better.
i am also waiting to see the final result when it is open to public in the middle of next year... hopefully it turns out well.
we are aware that Don Muang is in a rather sorry state too...
but considering that the airport terminal is many decades old (about 40 to 50 years) while the airport itself was built in 1917, it is understandable that things are falling apart today.
in fact, there have been little or no upgrading works going on there since 2003 because all air traffic (except private jets / military planes) will move to Suvarnabhumi next year.
Thais don't usually carpet their office / home because of our tropical climate. Besides, our furniture make use of less amount of upholstry when compared to those found in the West.
Hence, you rarely really see carpets in public areas.
Rather, we use marble, wood and tiles to keep these places cool.

I agree. Let's wait. After all, BKK is one of my favourite cities to visit and I can't wait to use the facilities at the new airport. The only drawback now is that Dong Muang is old, smelly, and inefficient. Immigration through Dong Muang can take ages especially when you arrive towards midnight. BKK traffic, apparantely, is quite heavy during that part of the night.

talking about traffic...
expect the transport link to be a lot better than Don Muang
there are 2 main routes which lead you directly into the city, both of which are 6 or 8-lane expressway (tolled).
in late 2007 the high-speed rail link should be up and running, allowing passengers a quick 15-minute journey from the airport to the city centre, linking the skytrain and the subway. this Light Red line is currently underconstruction, but 2 to 3 months delay is expected.
there will be 11 local bus routes plus a few Suvarnabhumi Express services(limited stop bus service shutting between the city and the airport)
while Don Muang is 18 km away to the North, the new airport is about 24 km east of the city (distance by road)... traffic around there is generally much lighter than the road outside Don Muang...

Well, it looks like it is all good news from here. Hi-speed rail link should be great and I hope it will also connect us to any one of the BTS stations in the city.

It will connect to Petchaburi subway station and Phayathai skytrain station. :)
Mosaic November 7th, 2005, 03:40 PM It will connect to Petchaburi subway station and Phayathai skytrain station. :)
At that time, I guess The Phayathai skytrain station will be one of the busiest stations of all.

Well, Traffic condition in BKK is one of many things that we can't underestimate. Even we will have more than 2 main routes( actually 5 routes or more) linking New airport to the city but when we consider the size of The new airport ( 10 times bigger than Don Mung), sure there are many many more people , more vehicles, more traffics and don't you forget that some routes are used as the main road to the eastern part of Thailand ( Pattaya, Sriracha, Chonburi, Rayong, Sattaheep, Maptaput etc..) so the result is inevitably more traffics, more vehicles. I am afraid that this will bring a great chaotic traffic jam once the Airport be opened. Anyway, The High speed train would help ease traffic for sure but how much is a thing that we need to discuss later. :)
dave_chanh November 7th, 2005, 06:53 PM As for now, I think the traffic along the Motorway isn't that light, I used to drive on that route quite often, during some hours the traffic can get bad, especially when there is an accident on the road, just one car crashed into the sideway, caused the hell of a traffic night mare!! I was stuck there for quite some time!
Despite having more traffic lanes on the Motorway than that on Viphavadi Rd. don't really help much, because there is no expressway along that route, unless you get to the Rama 9 junction where a connection to the expressway begins, unlike on Viphavadi where the expressway continues all the way to Rangsit-Phatomthanee, and having said that, the traffic on Viphavadi Rd. isn't that good!
So, you can imagine for yourself what the traffic in that area will be like once the new airport opens.
