A non-manc in another forum (cant remember the person or the forum!lol) was sayin that they thought manchesters skyline in 2008 would look similiar to present day atlanta, and that manc would get a 1000ft scraper in the near future.

Was just interested to see what anybody thinks of this. Do you agree with this/ think it is possible or realsistic??

for example, do we have the population, infrastructure and jobs to support this prediction?

any thoughts?

I'm not at all educated enough to say yes or no to most points but it'll be a long bloody wait until we get a 300m tower.

A sense of perspective? Look at the night photo above. I can only make out about 10 tall buildings in it. I think this is perfectly feasible for Manchester by 2012.

Not realistic at all. Our city centre is already reaching saturation point for posh yuppie flats and Beetham is barely half way.

Why the hell would you want Manchester to look like Atlanta? Great skyline, but get up close and Manchester kicks it's arse. No... Manchester needs to look like Manchester, not aspire to copy so sprawling American city.

If that was true I'd be wanting a skyline like NYC with a few supertalls thrown in. It's got nothing to do with that. My personal opinion is that some of the best cities in the world barely have a skyline at all. I honestly do believe, though, that Manchester could manage to have a cluster of around 10 tallish Eastgate-sized towers by 2012.

Agreed. Manchester's boom will probably slow down a lot over the next few years (unless it takes a new shape, one that doesnt involve residential schemes) and the city will have a steady growth.

I can't see how you believe this boom will continue though. I'm incredibly surprised we're still seeing it, especially considering the number of brand new flats being left empty.

What I'm saying is, be a proper bloody Northerner and stop jumping on silly bandwagons. Think about this with some perspective. We want Manc to be unique, let's not make another Atlanta. And stop with comparing us to whatever else. If people were just patient and looked at developing our city in a way that benefits the people of Manchester, we wouldn't have this constant cock waving on here and we wouldn't have the large amount of lego brick shite that does go up.

Lets see!

Theres atleast 10 obvious skycrapers/towers in that picture! Being honest and comparing like for like, I would say we have 7 city centre towers under construction or planned to match Atlanta! That leaves use 3 short, however if the rumours are right, there are a few more skyscrapers/towers planned for the city centre in the not to distant future!

Dont forget about Quay point(not in the city centre) and the numerous smaller towers, CJC, GNT, etc, etc!

We've already got

1. Sunley tower. (arf!)

2. Beetham tower. (under construction)

3. Eastgate. (approved)

4. Crown. (approved)

5. No1 (no new info yet, certain to get built )

6. Chapel warf. (renders, will almost certainly get built)

7 Wilmot tower. (renders, will almost certainly get built)

Atlanta! We're coming after you! :)

As far as I know, Eastgate is as tall as the tower with two orange lumps on top in the Atlanta pic. Yes, Atlanta has a couple of taller buildings, but from a skyline perspective this makes little difference. If anything it serves to enhance the appearance of the midranges we have. I'm not saying "Manchester will have more tall buildings than Atlanta by 2012", merely that I think the skyline will compete.

No.1 is Hardman Square I'm guessing. And Wilmot Street is the ATS Site/ Southern Gateway 30 storey Ian Simpson jobby.

By the way, Atlanta has 48 buildings over 100m tall. If were lucky we'll have 10 by 2010.

Its not wanting to be Atlanta or like Atlanta! Its just a comparison of what Manchester could look like 1n 2012!

If Manchester is going to looK somthing like Atlanta that from a distance in 2012, then I'm quite happy with that!
Add to that our re-developed historical buildings and WOW, the best of both worlds! Stunning modern SKYSCRAPERS and splendid VICTORIAN BUILDINGS! :)

Britannia

The comparison with Atlanta seems to have been put to bed, but I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that Manchester has the potential to create one of the UK's best high-rise skylines.

Ok so London will always go taller and have more, purely because it has more money, but of all other British cities, Manchester strikes me as having the best ingredients for a high-rise skyline. It is relatively flat, so no awkward topography to deal with ala Sheffield. It already has a few tall buildings puncturing the skyline, which no other city really does. It has some large blocks in the city centre which makes developing large buildings easier. The scale (area and height) of buildings in the city centre is generally larger than other British cities, particularly in terms of the Victorian blocks like the Palace hotel. I also think it has the highest architectural standards of any British city at the moment (a close-run thing with Glasgow), and seems to know more than any other what type of skyline it wants.

I don't think for one second it will grow to resemble Atlanta, but I can certainly see it generating a skyline that has real presence and an impact that few other British cities will achieve. And I'm slightly more optimistic than some about the chances of a supertall. OK 300m is not really going to happen, but something in the mould of Arena Central could easily be proposed. Beetham have set the pace, Inacity have matched it... maybe give it a few years, but it's not outside the realms of possibility that some developer with a nice big city centre site will look at those towers, wait until the market can absorb a new hotel and a few more luxury apartments, and propose a 'signature' tower to cash in. 200m, 250m... once you get above about 35 floors, you may as well go that extra distance to be the tallest! The Council have been processing towers with lightning speed... even ISA are amazed at how quickly Crown Buildings got through, so which developer wouldn't be encouraged by that climate?

In the end I think it all comes down to ambition and to a certain degree self-confidence. British cities always seem to punch below their weight, almost being embarassed to act as big as they are or be as brash and bold as their US (and now Asian) counterparts. Manchester is a big city, and from all the stuff I read it seems to be growing in stature and economic importance. I think if it really recognises what it can do, it won't be afraid of continuing to build big, and maybe it needs to if it really wants to capitalise on what it has.

Griff
May 27th, 2005, 10:40 PM
A very good point, very well put, Britannia. The only worry I have about Manchester's tall buildings is that they seem to be all over the place though. It doesn't really matter in terms of street-level impression, but it does in terms of creating a "signature" skyline.

Its not just having tall buildings(it helps) but if you want to be a bigger city you need to get the big boy's in your office space. Like we have CIS and also a Big Bank from the US has just moved over to Manchester. We really need afew more big world companies to give the office space a kick in the arse.
