That building was the original Buffalo State before it moved to Elmwood Avenue in the 30's. It bacame GC High after Buff State moved

Hey ECT, notice in the last two pictures above how they left those South facing windows blocked up in the top three floors. That's a shame because they would've offered a great view of downtown.

Speaking of "THURSDAY in the SQUARE (http://www.buffaloplace.com/aboutus/marketing/summerconcertseries.html)" here's a picture of it in full effect from 6 feet off the ground.

Here we're looking west again. That empty lot below is where the BUFFALO GAS WORKS (http://www.biniasz.com/pages/3/index.htm) used to be. You can still see the facade. BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York
has selected this site for its headquarters and its accompanying 1,250 employees. Pictured below is the same area circa 1964 (from a slightly different angle).

***I just hope BC/BS doesn't build anything above ten stories there because it would block the view of the lake from the observation deck of city
hall which is one of the few, if only places the general public can get a birds eye perspective of the area.***
Malo May 31st, 2005, 02:44 AM The Queen City looks grand as always. Great shots, noc..
WIGS May 31st, 2005, 04:16 AM great pics! wow
BuffCity May 31st, 2005, 04:50 AM kick ass...the deck is always a good place to go on a nice day.
xzmattzx May 31st, 2005, 07:34 AM i always wondered what that facade was for. i was clueless. when i was younger, i thought it was used as a backdrop for outdoor plays. that idea still seemed feasible to me even in the last few years.
also, i took a closer look at some of the pictures. i noticed that some trees don't have their leaves yet. it's a little strange to me to see trees in late may that haven't gotten all their trees yet. similarly, i see leaves changing colors in late august when i'm up there. you guys have a short summer. my mom, from tonawanda, always tells people of buffalo summers: pleasant in the day, cool at night. never put your quilts in the attic, because you might need them even in july and august.

Save this as a 'before' photo. We'll have the HealthNow building on the Gasworks site and a new residential project (Norstar or Paladino) on the grassy area next to Admiral's Walk in Waterfront Village. :cheers2:
ECoastTransplant May 31st, 2005, 08:19 PM Hey ECT, notice in the last two pictures above how they left those South facing windows blocked up in the top three floors. That's a shame because they would've offered a great view of downtown. [/SIZE]
It may be one or both of two things- structural integrity of the wall and/or their plans for a rooftop patio on the shorter building. I like that they didn't paint the whole exterior and left some 'grit' including the old painted yet faded advertising.
Its kind of weird that Paladino didn't put more windows in the backside of the Bergers Building. Do they all front on Main???
