View Full Version : Which tower would you rebuilt?
Obelixx May 30th, 2005, 12:53 AM Avala TV Tower and Odinstårnet as tourist attraction and for TV broadcasting, the radio mast Gabin for high power longwave transmission (and perhaps FM transmission), the Mittelturm Königswusterhausen for carrying antennas for VLF transmission experiments (and as a landmark for Germany!).
I am a DX-freak!
Phobos May 30th, 2005, 12:56 AM I haven't see the poll so I thought you were asking in general :)
IchO May 30th, 2005, 12:31 PM NY- WTC, 3 bldngs.
ƒƒ May 30th, 2005, 12:47 PM Hm yeah maybe the WTC indeed, but we'll see what the Freedom Tower will give.
And I'd rather finish the so many unfinished churches, for example in Belgium the cathedral of Antwerp, which would be the largest church in the world.
Unfinished churches in Belgium with the height they have and should have reached:
Antwerpen, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal: 3 towers of 123m, 65m (should have been higher than the 123m one), 48m (there were 7 towers of at least 123m planned)
Antwerpen, Sint-Jacobskerk: 55m (should have been taller than the cathedral)
Mechelen, Sint-Romboutskathedraal: 97m (167m)
Mons, Eglise Sainte-Waudru: (190m)
Gent, Sint-Michielskerk: (134m)
Leuven, Sint-Pieterskerk: (3 towers of 136m, 165/170m, 136m)
Roeselare, Sint-Michielskerk: 64/65m (tower of 91m was blown off by the wind)
TowersNYC May 30th, 2005, 07:25 PM WTC for sure

Completely agree...and not just demolishing it, but then replacing it with the turd built on its site. A pox on all involved.
centreoftheuniverse August 5th, 2006, 06:46 AM This is not a tower, but I would love to see it rebuilt.

Schiller Building - Garrick Theater
Adler & Sullivan
73 m / 17 flrs
1892 - destroyed in 1961
The theatre contained 1286 seats
http://cinematreasures.org/theater/1016/
Originally named the Schiller Theatre (after the Schiller Building, which was considered a masterpiece of the Chicago School of architecture. designed by the firm of Adler & Sullivan), the theater portion of the building was renamed the Garrick during WWI when anti-German sentiment was strong. During the 30s, movies took over from legitimate theater at the Garrick when the theater was acquired by the Balaban & Katz circuit. The firm of Rapp & Rapp was hired during the 30s to remodel parts of the Garrick, including the main entrance, ticket booth and lobby areas, in Art Deco style.
During the late 40s and early 50s, the Garrick stage was used for live local (and later national) television broadcasts. By the mid-50s, the theater was once again used as a movie house.
When Balaban & Katz announced it was shuttering the Garrick in 1960 and it would be torn down, there was one of the earliest organized public outcries in Chicago to save an historic building, but it was to no avail, since it was demolished a few months later and replaced with a monstrously ugly multilevel parking garage (that was itself razed in the late 90s).
A large portion of the facade featuring portraits of famous Germans was saved and was later incorporated into the entranceway of the Second City Theater on North Wells Street.
On the same block as the Garrick stood a handful of other theaters, now all gone as well -- the Olympic (later renamed the Apollo), the Woods, and the Harris and the Selwyn (whose facades were salvaged and incorporated into the new Goodman Theater, which occupies the former site of the Woods, Harris and Selwyn Theatres).
