The population of Bogota is estimated to be around 7.5 million inhabitants.

Although Lima, Peru has a slightly larger population, Bogota is the main urban and industrial center of northern Southamerica, having Sao Paulo, Rio, Santiago and Buenos Aires in the southern half of the continent.

Bogota has also got a good percentage of Colombia's total GDP, which is the fourth largest in Latin America (after Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina).

By the way, in pictures 2,3,4 what is seen is not smoke or city pollution; it is actually the typical fog present early in the mornings due to the rather cool weather all year round; Bogota is located at 2600 metres (some 8800 ft.) above sea level.

You are somehow right. The war on drugs is actually a regional effort to fight against drug trafficking at every level in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the US, etc...

The Good News is that Colombia has finally taken off in terms of economical growth; according to some recent figures, it is more or less the 25th economy in the world going up from a 30+ or so position some years ago, when violence was at its peak. These days, violence or lack of safety is not more noticeable in places like Bogota than in other average Latinamerican capitals, and infrastructure has improved a whole lot in the recent years too.

As I mentioned before, Colombia is also taking giant steps in the regional context, now becoming the 4th largest Latin American economy and 6th in the American contient. In addition, the country has become more decentralized throughout the years, and investment in other major cities is evident.

There are still many issues to be addressed; however, more encouraging news are taking place every day, despite the always negative media coverage abroad, and the somewhat biased and untrue image that is presented to some european countries and other locations. For example, the fact that our President has an overall approval rating of 75% (a unique case in the region) is totally ignored. That is why I believe that the country is an exemplary democracy for the region.
