Guyana, Canada sign air services agreement

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 30 (AFP) - Guyana and Canada on Monday signed a bilateral air services agreement, making way for airlines from the two countries to begin offering scheduled direct flights on the route from next month.

Anthony Xavier, Guyana's aviation minister, said this agreement replaces one between Canada and Britain signed in 1949 before Guyana got independence from Britain, in 1966.

With at least 200,000 Guyanese living in Canada, he said "definitely direct links between our two countries would be of tremendous advantage" and so ease problems like cancelled flights and delayed luggage while at the same time promoting trade, tourism and investments.

Negotiations for the bilateral air services agreement began in February 2004 and concluded in January 2005.

Under the agreement, airlines from Guyana and Canada would be allowed a maximum of four passenger and three cargo flights weekly.
