The town of Gospic - Lika region (aslo known as one of the last developed parts of the country), Croatia

GOSPIC, a town in the central part of Lika, situated on a drained plateau near the Novcica river; elevation 656 m; population 9,025. The town was first mentioned in 1692; from 1733 it developed as a new, planned seat of the Regiment of Lika. Later it became the seat of the Regiment of Krajina and in the 1880s the centre of the County of Lika and Krbava. It is the administrative, cultural, educational and medical centre of Lika. Its economic basis is rather poor (metal-working plants, battery industry, agricultural combine, building contractors, textile industry, etc.).

^ Wow, you can actually see that it is less developed than the rest of Croatia. Everything looks to be of a lesser quality: smaller, cheaper, more fragile, etc.

That said, it is still gorgeous. :) I love Ante Starcevic's house. It's similar to what I would call a "Bosnian house". Is there any reason for that? Any Bogumil, Bosnian, Ottoman, whatever...influences at the time the house was built? Or is it just a typical, Balkan home?

Ohh that is a typical old 'alpine' house. I didnt know it was common for Balkans only, cuz i've seen many houses like that in other European countries too - mostly in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic etc etc etc.

^ Could be right. Me calling it a Balkan/Bosnian house doesn't mean it's not anywhere else as well, but I think the style of the patio is unique to us? I'm not sure.

That's very sly... Nikola Tesla was Serb scientist that lived in Croatia...Like I did, and 500 000 other Serbs... But, we're not gonna talk about politics here... I just wanted to mention he was serbian scientist, not croatian...

Cool, I like planned cities in the Old continent!
And the first pic is really interesting, with a well maintained road, and the touristic sign...
Well let's hope you'll wait for Bulgaria in 2009 :)

Nikola Tesla was too Croatian, he proudly stated that Croatia was his homeland :), unlike some other people in the early 90's ;) :D

Gospic isnt really a touristic place, so i dont know what's up with that sign ;)
What did you mean by waiting for Bulgaria in 2009 ? :)

I don't care about Tesla, its easily proven what and who he was...how about another great mind to come out of our region...Ivo Andric? What was he, in Croatian opinion?;)

Yeah but that was way before NDH ;)

Back to Gospic though... you find it to be a rural region of Lika? Isn't Gospic the most urbanized place in Lika?

Of course, but here in Balkans, nobody cares about such "trivialities".
Whats important...is the nationality? So what was he? Do you consider him a Croat?

^ He was a Nobel prize winning author. He was born and raised in Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was educated in Sarajevo. He wrote "Bridge Over the Drina", an epic tale of Bosnia's Ottoman-to-Austrian history. He's also the author of the "Bosnian Serbs: Bosnian First" line. His writing is just...spellbinding.

His house, in Travnik, is a museum as well:

The entire region of Lika is a very rural and hardly populated region, that is what i meant, while Gospic is just one of very few urban places in that 'desert'.

Mila, I know who Ivo Andric was, but that was not what KM wanted to know, his target was Ivo Andric's nationality ;)

^ He was a proud Bosnian Serb, and a testament to the greatness of the Bosnian Serb people. Na Drina Cuprija is the only book I've ever read that has a flow as seamless and beautiful as the Torah, Bible, and Quran.

They can, and should, be flattered to count him among their own. :)

Ohh I seeee now. Yup, they look quite similar, probably cuz of the same roof material ;) I like these 'Bosnian houses' more though, they look very cute and charming :)
I think i've seen some houses like that in some Bulgarian pics, too.

Mila, you need to grab a good book about Ivo Andric...he was NOT a "proud Bosnian Serb", as you put it, but a (Bosnian) Croat.

He was born a Croat....but after seeing the terrible crimes of the Croatian regime against Serbs..(he was a staunch "Yugoslav") , he denounced his nationality and permanently settled in Serbia, in Belgrade where he felt most comfortable. Thats where he did most of his work, and thats where he died...as a Serb.

Weird, but shouldn't suprise anyone...its the Balkans after all.

I like different colors of the roofs. It's not all red, like in some places.

What? You're surprised? You can't believe I'd say something false? :)

That's what his museum in Travnik claims, so it must be true. I mean, you believe blindly the most nonsensical claims out of SiCG? :)

In Ukraine we use different colors for the roofs all the time :)
