An airline-quality watchdog based in Britain released the results of a survey Thursday naming Air Canada the best airline in North America as part of its 2005 World Airline Awards.
Skytrax announced the winners Thursday morning after 10 months of conducting surveys with more than 12 million passengers around the world.
“Unlike other customer reviews, we interviewed customers from the U.S. to South America to Europe and Asia. The results aren't only from one area of the world,” Skytrax marketing director Peter Miller said.
“It encompasses all passenger types – be they business travellers, vacationers, backpackers and more. This ensures the survey truly reflects opinions from the majority, rather than a selective study which makes awards based upon a small number of business travellers only.”
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. scooped the winning title as airline of the year 2005 for the second straight year.
The independent survey “measures over 35 different aspects of passenger satisfaction for each airline's product and service standards, evaluating the 'typical' travel experience,” the company's website reads.
Mr. Miller noted that Air Canada's high ranking marks a resurgence of the airline from recent financial problems, especially with its “steady upward curve of satisfaction” among passengers.
“Air Canada's got a lot of (its) own problems," he said, "but it is getting back to where it was 10 years ago, where it was one of the best airlines to fly with.”
