I have been out and busy today, taking photos of three of Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs….

… today, I present to you IVANHOE, ALPHINGTON and CLIFTON HILL!

I hope you enjoy these… :)

(And sorry they are so small, but it seems PhotoBucket shrank them, grrrr)

The Mien shop – classic Victorian!
From mien.com.au: Built in 1889 during the Edwardian period in the Queen Anne style. 370 Queens Parade is of architectural significance as one of the best examples of English Queen Anne Revival style commercial architecture in Melbourne. It is the only metropolitan example of Queen Anne style bank buildings in Victoria The building was originally built to house one of Melbourne's first banks (originally "The First Melbourne" Bank), since then it has only ever been a salon

I quite like Ivanhoe, a very different feeling suburb to many of the suburbs around it. It's similar in some respects to Camberwell, but its got a distint feel to it.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! :)

Yes, I too was reminded of St. Ignatius in Richmond when I was photographing St. John's.

St Ignatius was designed by William Wardell and built between 1867-83, while St John the Baptist was designed by J.B. Denny (built between 1876-93) who worked with the famous A.W.N. Pugin in Britain. The spire was added in 1907.

I am unsure whether one was the inspiration for the other! Initially it seems they could be, but a later and more careful examination of the photos shows many differences.
