The Borj-e Milad is Iran's tallest tower. Built in Tehran, Iran, it stands 435 meters (1427 ft) high from base to tip of antenna. The head consists of a large pod with 12 floors, the roof which is at 315 m 1034 ft. Below this is a staircase and elevators to reach the area.

Milad tower is part of The Tehran International Trade and Convention Center. Scheduled for completion in late 2005, the project includes the Milad telecommunication tower offering restaurants at the top with spectacular views of Tehran, a five-star hotel, a convention center, a world trade center, and an IT park. The complex seeks to respond to the needs of business in the globalized world of the 21st century by offering facilities combining trade, information, communication, convention and accommodation all in one place.

The complex features a parking area of 27,000 square meters, a large computer and telecommunication unit, a cultural and scientific unit, a commercial transaction center, a temporary showroom for exhibiting products, a specialized library, an exhibition hall and an administrative unit. Milad Tower is also claimed to be the fourth tallest free standing structure in the world, and the only tower with an octogonal base, symbolizing traditional Persian architecture.

Experts are also suggesting for the registration of the Tower as an Iranian national heritage. Experts believe that the new tower will one day replace the today symbol of the capital of Iran, the Azadi Tower. They say it will take some time for people to get accustomed to the structure, gradually accepting it as the new symbol of Tehran metropolitan.

The new concrete structure of Milad Tower which stands up 435 meter high on Gisha Hills of Tehran is reaching its final phase and will soon be completed.

The Tower is considered the forth highest communication-broadcasting tower of the world and the first considering the vast functional structure on its top.

Azadi Tower did not become the symbol of the capital by advertising or any special plans, explains a preservation expert, Eskandar Mokhtari, but rather by peoples’ affection for the tower. “They stood next to the tower and took pictures, and those who traveled to Tehran from other provinces talked of the special tower in their return home,” said Mokhtari.

Mokhtari believes that Milad Tower will undergo the same process, in time becoming the new symbol of Tehran. Milad Tower which can be seen from any place in Tehran is located in a 70-hectare land, 17 of which is possessed by the tower and the rest will be given to a future five-star international hotel, an international communication center, conference halls, an information technology and commercial center, plus a museum allocated to the legacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to executive manager of the Yademan Sazeh Company which is in charge of constructing the tower, Mohammadhasan Nazarpour, the project is not only going to include tourist facilities, but also is to replace the Azadi Tower as the symbol of the Iranian capital. It is moreover proof of the Iranian engineers and scientists’ expertise.

Azadi Tower has long been known as the symbol of the Iranian capital, but despite its being registered as a national heritage and having the special attention of the Iranian Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO), today it breathes heavily amidst the Azadi Square traffic jam, air pollution, and improper maintenance.

i remember looking at pics of this at least a year ago (maybe two years). since that time there has been slow progress. are they having difficulty with the observation pod and antenna? that section seems to be taking ages to construct. maybe there is financial problems?

let me tell you why it is taking so long:

borje milad is using a new form of anti earth quake foundation. its planted into the ground like a tree, it has metal roots that go deep into the ground to keep it stabilized, its the first time ever being tried, (lets hope it works!). what happened a few years ago was that the tower was starting to tilt or there was something wrong with the foundation (i forgot which) so they had to go back in and fix the problem, which took a long time. that is why its has taken so long and it probably wont finish for another year.

Yes, they'll put glass on it according to the Baztab article. I think they'll only put glass on the sides where the stairs are visible, plus they're apparently planning installing glass elevators.

Space needle and the CN tower both have Glass observatory decks and Glass floor along with Glass elevators. Its great.

Glass is good.

And the Milad tower is looking better than the tower in Malaysia, I have to say you guys have done a good job in incorporating traditional Iranian archtiecture to the lower half of the observatory deck.

It's funny, you hear about large buildings being built in the middle of metropolisis that finish much faster than this. For example, the Empire State Building was built in under 20 months, and that was 70 years ago. But Milad has been under construction for what, 5 years?

In Toronto there are fundraising events held in which people climb the stairs to the observatory Deck. Well that's what i'm told atleast from some random dude that had a T-Shirt that read "I Climbed the CN Tower"

I CLIMBED THE CN TOWER!!! it was reallyyyyyyyy hard at the end of it i was in dire need of water!!! lol


I just moved back to Iran a couple days ago and when i left the airport to go home i saw the tower haha they had decorated the tower with lights it looked SOOOOOOOOO Bad. with the lights the tower looked slanted and some of the lights had gone out.. embarassing sight... they say they will finish the tower in 1 year doubt it tho!

I read something about the final piece of the antenna is being manufactured abroad and transported into Iran to be fitted.. so its near completion.. but i guess they have to sort out the inside as well.. i doubt if it will be inaugurated until late 2007

The top of Tehrans Milad tower was completed and inagurated today, the antenna is 120 m tall and the whole tower is now 435,2 m.

phase 1; the rest of the tower (including glass facade and elevators) will be completed in the next 10 months and willbe inagurated in the 2nd half of next year.

phase 2; the international exhibition center and a five star hotel will be inagurated after that.

when I was in Tehran on summer it had a digital countdown which said 400 days left. So by now I guess it will finish in about 300 days.

I was in Iran in 2005 last time. Back then, the long spire was not added yet. I knew the tower was going to be 435 m or something. When I used to pass by it by car, I said to myself this can't be close to 435 m, but with this newly added, and very long, spire, I understand it is about 435 m. It looked like 200 m or something without the spire.

Yeah, I agree! Iran needs to build its cities with a unique Iranian design. The Arab states of the Persian Gulf building the "cities of tomorrow" because they lack any real history. If/When Iran finally begins to attract large number of tourists, it should attempt to attract them with something different... Something modern, yet classicaly Iranian.

we can mix our historical architecture like sassanid ashkanid safavid achamenid and other old persian architecture with post modern to build our buildings!

IMO traditional architechture is not very suitable for structures such as this, unless you want it to look like Gonbad Kabus, which wouldn't really fit into Tehran anyway. :P

oh yes, the old i think about 31 years now 747SP with registration EP-IAA (i beleive) was just 'refurbished' with (as they say) brand new parts and peices, the pplane is practically as good as new. they will fly it again shortly. ( if you look close enough, you can even see the metal plates on the body)

Yeh you're right, I read an article a while back expressing that the Milad tower is to take the Azadi Tower's (http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7640/tehran2lm7.jpg) status as Tehran's icon.. which is kool but the Azadi Tower still deserves its props, I think it will be difficult for some to make the switch BUT the milad tower can be seen from a lot of Tehran so that will help it steal peoples hearts :D

Azadi Towerr is BEATIFUL! it is always a symbol for Iran, this will be, a second symbol :P

the design of the Azadi is significant, it is unique, irreplacable

I have a question:

Would the height of the Tower be more in meters since it is already situated on top of a hill.

So let's say if it is 400 meters and if the height of the hill is 100 Meters, then the height or distance of the tower from the ground will be like 500 meters, right?

but the tower is still, 435m,
