Empires like Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece , Rome, Byzantium, the mamluks, the turks and the British all left a part of their history here so how come isn’t it important?! History in the world is based on religion. Everything in ancient time was. And this is the place where all prophets of all religions visited. Crusades and jihads were pretty much like a world war which was going on here. Not to mention the historical importance for Jews. Jerusalem gave a bigger impact on the world then Athens, not smaller anyway.
