Some difficulty was encountered in turning the phrase 'Lord Mayor of Liverpool' into Latin and Caton remarked to the Vice-Chancellor that "there is some authority for ' Lyrpolitanus ' though it looks a little funny."

I thought the motto for the City of Liverpool is; "From this pleasure comes great learning" and the motto of Liverpool University is;"From this learning comes great pleasure". . Am I wrong?

The motto of Liverpool 'Deus Nobis Haec Otia Fecit' is from the Roman poet Virgil and is commonly translated as 'God has given to us this leisure' or 'Thank God for this time off'. The motto of Liverpool University 'Haec Otia Studia Fecit' is a response to the city motto and is translated as 'This leisure promotes our studies'.

If you want a motto for the whole of Merseyside how about the one of the old Mersey Railway: 'Shall ride in triumph over all mischance'?
