Hi

I just got back from a few days stay in HK and took several pics. I had a great experience there and took some pics. I think I'll post some of my random pics here first.

This is my favourite spot in HK: the Tsim Tsha Tsui waterfront promenade: I like the open, breezy feeling here, with the smell of the harbour and the people. At night its awesome:

Walking towards it...

thanks hya!

This was on the first day I arrived in HK (on May 28 ^^). It was in the late afternoon.

here are more views of the promenade, and taking the Star Ferry over.

http://img222.echo.cx/img222/8250/hk52kx.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

I noticed that on Sundays it is a popular hangout for scores of South Asian, Filipino & Indonesian workers, so much that the promenade seems to outnumber locals.

Surely you have more pictures to show us poor souls.....

That IFC2 tower is freakin cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure it looks scary because of its immense height in relation to the heights of the surrounding buildings...
Sure it looks scary because its so super sleek and shiny and glassy that it seems as though a very long spaceship has landed on earth to exterminate us humans................

BUT MY GOD I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks too like a shiny bullet piercing through the sky......

And its cool when the clouds prevent its top from being seen...like some mysterious building smack right in the middle of HK. Adds a little bit of excitement I suppose...to wonder just what is hidden behind those clouds...

Okay I am going nuts here...

My god NOW THATS WHAT YOU CALL A NARROW HARBOUR...

Is it ''fragrant'' standing on the harbour's shores? Read that waste, semi filtered raw waste is being dumped into it such that only rabbitfish etc survive.

Can you compile a list of how much and on what did you spend there (excluding shopping etc, just like airfares, taxes, hotel, transport, these basics)

What airline? Don't tell me its that S$288 HK return......

My god, I wouldn't mind paying like S$70 dollars more for SIA than Valuair if I want better service...

But if I am dead broke, Jetstar I heard has prices like S$150 return?

hyacinthus
June 6th, 2005, 11:41 AM
@ignoramus

The air is okay. not stinky.

You have not included the airport tax etc... Total for JetStar + Return is $240 per pax.

RafflesCity

@hya...I know..I was there from about 4pm to 7pm..aiyah....

@ignoramus, dont worry I have more..its just that after not having posted pics for a while..its quite a lot to go through :D

be assured I will post more, and yes I like 2IFC and 1IFC very much. There was one cloudy night 2IFC was lit up so strongly that the light seemed to disperse through the clouds like electricity..truly an out-of-the-world experience....

pls be patient :D

actually it wasnt smelly..it smells just like our Marina Bay/river..which is a familiar smell and makes me like it. Stand on the deck of the Star Ferry for the experience. (I hope that when they build the new piers, they will keep the old ferries)

I flew free-of-charge to HK as I was using my SIA mileage for the ticket. I stayed free-of-charge as I put up at my cousin's house.

My daily expenses included taxi-trips, rides on the MTR and meals, as well as paying to go to the peak and Lantau Island...I dont think I spent that much actually considering I wasnt planning to shop..just sight see...

So give me a full run down of the costs. I would be so grateful for that...

Transportation (To & from the airport):
Hotel (which):

Basically all the charges incurred travelling from SG Changi Airport to HKIA, from HKIA to hotel, & vice versa

well..I decided to go because the forumer Monkey asked me to go and since I am free now..what the heck..just go!

Moreoever, I realized that I do need to use my mileage because it does lapse if unused after some time...

very nice pictures ... i like the traffic picture the most as thats the road i had to take to citycentre from taikooshing when i was young ...
just out of curiosity did u guys think hk(island side) experience is quite similar to that of singapore?
a busier, messier and less planned version of it?

from one of the pics it looks as if u went to macau or lamma ... will we see pictures of that too??? that will be exciting ...

I always pictured Hong Kong as the asian counterpart of NYC, or NYC as the western counterpart of HK...whatever...

There are a lot of similarities.
1. Hong Kong Island = Manhattan Island
2. Linked by road & rail tunnels to the mainland
3. Underneath a somewhat polluted water channel (Victoria Harbour Versus Hudson River)
4. Filled absolutely to the brim with skyscrapers of immense height

Then again HK has that gorgeous mountain backdrop while NYC has that awesome Central Park etc etc etc.

But at first glance they just seem to similar...

hmm... how did u guess? :) The business district portion is similar to Singapore's except we don't have trams. The mid-level escalator portion is very HK. Very steep... I tried hard not to roll down the slope after the end of the mid-level escalator to Peak Tram. Just joking... :D

But, it's really steep...

and the smaller inner roads ... it adds another layer ...

a small part feels quite similar physically to Singapore's financial district: the area near Cheung Kong Centre & HSBC: broad pavements, large open square and glossy glass skyscrapers. Overall, HK does have a similar feel to Singapore despite having many differences as well. Here are some examples:

http://tinypic.com/5ppshf

http://tinypic.com/5ppu2e

its is quite interesting to look at how the flats are conquering the mountains, and not just on HK island...on the way in from the airport, there are masses being built too.

http://tinypic.com/5ppu7r

However, these scenes near Nathan Rd are typically HK and are very lively and bustling

thank you! :colgate: But, this is RC's thread...

I am so happy to see friendly interaction between SG and HK forumers instead of the usual city vs city "fight"... Sometimes, I wonder what good would it do to both cities for saying bad/untrue/subjective remarks about each other in those threads... I thought wouldn't be better to concentrate on the strengths of each city instead? This would create a win-win situation, wouldn't it? Probably, both sides took it too seriously and were very defensive...

Truly hope this friendly interaction would last. :)

Perhaps, it's wishful thinking on my part. But, I really hope to see huaiwei and hkskyline would turn to good forum friends one day ( though it's kind of entertaining to read their arguments sometimes :jk: ). Unfortunately, huaiwei has not logon for a long time to see this... wonder what he has been busy with... :sleepy:

Singapore murder mystery

Police in Singapore are probing the deaths of a man and woman after the macabre discovery of their bodies in a car surrounded by tokens of romantic love.

The decomposing remains were found wrapped in cloth after security guards were alerted to the stench emanating from the vehicle in a car park at the Orchard Towers shopping complex.

The man's body was inside a wax-spattered wicker basket on the back seat while the woman's had been placed in the car boot along with wilted roses and dried flowers.

Police interviewed by Reuters news agency would not comment on speculation that the dead were victims of a jealous spouse or gangland killers.

Champagne

"We're still trying to establish the identity of the two persons, bearing in mind that these are decomposed bodies," a police spokesman told Reuters.

According to a local paper, a "romantic note", a champagne glass and a corkscrew were also among the items found in the car.

Security camera footage shows that the Singapore-registered sedan was driven into the car park on Friday, the Straits Times newspaper said.

Its grisly contents were revealed on Monday when a martial arts instructor holding classes in the area became suspicious because of the stench and alerted security guards who called the police.

The Orchard Towers complex is known for its many pubs and also for prostitutes.

Hong Konger hanged in Singapore for murder

Thursday, 09 June , 2005, 09:55
Singapore: Singapore prison officials on Friday hanged an Hong Kong worker for the murder of a colleague a week ago, bringing to 13 the number of people executed in the city-state this year.

A statement from the Singapore Police Force said hkskyline "was hanged at Changi Prison this morning at 6 am (2200 GMT) for the murder of his forum enemy, huaiwei."

hkskyline, 25, from Hong Kong, stabbed huaiwei with a knife during an argument a week ago, the police statement said.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he died the next day.

hkskyline was arrested at a checkpoint on June 6, 2005 and was charged with murder. He was found guilty on June 7, 2005 after a one-day trial and was sentenced to death.

His appeal against the conviction was dismissed in yesterday, the statement said.

Civil rights groups in Hong Kong and hkskyline's parents had earlier petitioned Singapore President for grant clemency.

The parents had argued that hkskyline had attacked his friend in a sudden fit of anger and there was no intention to kill.

"In fact, after stabbing huaiwei, hkskyline had taken him to a nearby hospital with his friends," his father said.

Amnesty International has also pleaded with the Singapore government to reconsider the death sentence.
