Hanoi skyline is soaring beautifuly, but I hate the parking lot so much, it's a waste of land and a killer of green parks
try to get a snapshot of the construction on Trang Tien street across from the opera house eh.
and remember to order all the collection of "Kien Truc" magazine.

1 of my grandmas was born in Hanoi and left when she was 19 and never been back..... so try to take lots of nice photos eh, I'll show it to her and convince her to go back to Hanoi (and taking me along hehe)

Seeing all of those images really makes me want to go back to Vietnam again. I remember my first trip there in 1999, there weren't that many high-rises. My 2001 trip saw a couple new ones I think, and my 2003 trip saw some more including the Sheraton hotel and the stadium under construction. I can't believe that in just two years(2003-2005) that many more new buildings have gone up! Last time I went I only had my film camera so I couldn't take many pictures(~100 in total) but next year, I'm bringing my digital and hope to snap at least 500 photos around Hanoi.

The Sofitel Metropole is actually the best 5 star Hotel in Hanoi and one of the best in Asia. It is its old French style that makes it out standing. But from this angle of view, it's nothing else but an ugly old building :)
the word "horrible" is the most suitable for the Hanoi Sheraton, a horrible cubic box

tq, you could keep the big images but reduce its' sizes in photoshops.......most of your photos are like 300-400kb it must took ya pretty long to upload and pretty long for me to see it downloading.

but I must say hanoi is classy.....all those new urbans are they on the same side with the current hanoi city or on the other side of the river?

shike
October 18th, 2005, 01:45 AM
They are located on the same side with the city. Actually, I haven't seen a lot of new highrise buildings appear on the other side of Song Hong.

tq
October 18th, 2005, 11:58 AM
Those here are all on the same side with the downtown as shike already said.
They are located especially western ( like my Dinh, Cau Giay, Trung Hoa Nhan Chinh, Trun Yen, (Tay Ho Tay) ...) and southern (like Dinh Conh, Linh Dam, ...) from the city.
Ciputra is located northern from the Westlake.

On the other side of the river you´ll find soon very large new urban areas like "Northern Red River" (US$30 billion), "Thien Duong" (US$1 billion) in Dong Anh and "Bo De- Gia Lam" in Gia Lam.

so red river located on the east or west of Hanoi?...I got a map of Hanoi but they only capture the center part of the city, so I don't know what is what outside of the city center

Maybe this map will give you a better view to Hanoi.

The more brightly color is more the outside of the city center.
But some urban areas are of the border between the line too.

I used to think like that to after I saw so many urban projects in Hanoi......but last year I read a nsewpaer....they said the total land of those projects in hanoi is 2100-2300ha.....but Saigon south alone is 2700ha.....and if you add that with Thao Dien in sistrict 2, new urban in district 9, maybe thr future thu thiem you get a heck more......but it was last year statistic so i'm not sure how many new projects hanoi is getting now.
besides, saigon is big so most people got their own house, even if they are slumps :) hanoi however is small and many people are still cooped up in the tight old quarter and old xoviet apartments, therefore there's an urgency to expand hanoi........and the winter in hanoi is cold, people need decent houses.......saigon: i could put up cardboards and few twigs and coconut leaves, and that's my house

they are really building cheap-looking appartments bloc in the surbubs of hanoi... of course hanoi needs some, but what the heck, even the manor is dramasticly horrible, with this ugly blue color for the first two floors...

tq
October 24th, 2005, 12:43 PM
@ Pelerin_au_tonkin: The first two floors of The Manor aren´t blue! They are brown-like. I know it because I was myself there. I visit this summer with my family the Housing Gallery.
BTW, the interior looks so beautiful! Every apartment has their own water well, cool walk-in closets (american style), many bathrooms and a funny rach xep (?).

You meant maybe the SongDa building near the main road which is very european too, right?

Compare Vietnam and Indian cities, I have to say Vietnam cities look much better than Indian ones, although the GDP per capita data show that India is higher than Vietnam http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html.

I think Vietnam may have similar phenomenon as China, that is the official economic data underestimate the real economic sizes.

Hi There,

No it is not a project from Archipel, this is a project from Systra Ingeneering. And They subcontrated the 3D video to Archipel.

But Archipel made a really good work by sequencing and choreographing the video all alone just from a digital camera (5mega pix) and using 3DMax.

...above the river they planned to build the Northern Red River Residentel Urban Area...Gia Lam is situated on the right side...I think its a bad masterplan...there is no good place where you can see the whole skyline...you know...there must be river as a boarder...the current downtown (Hoan Kiem Distrcit) doesnt't allowed any supertall skyscrapers anymore...so the new district of finace and business will situated in Cau Giay/ Tu Liem/ Tay Ho ----->>> Tay Ho Tay Plan

...I think the masterplan for Saigon is much better...from each side (Thu Thiem and District 1) you can see the whole skyline of one of them...

i thought these were old pictures so i didn't look until i looked at the date TQ posted.

hanoi is comming up so nice huh......they talked so much about replacing those 50-60s xoviet apartments in the foregrounds........hopefully they do that soon, and knock down everything and build something new..
as for the tubehouses they're fine......the tubehouses give vn cities a certain feeling you can not get that from anywhere else on earth.....even in phnom penh or vientian....because our tubhouses are so stylish and heavily decorated with french architecture....and nice bright colours too

and as for the colours choice......perfect.....i love it......they're vibrant.
vn is a tropical country.......you need bright colourful texture to feel refresh.....like in miami beach with their art-deco buildings painted in all the bright, blue , yellow, red.
unlike the boring cities in the north with red bricks like New England Boston, or new york city, they need warm casual colour to feel warm in the winter

vn is free.....do anything ya want vn

tq can you convert those pic to jpg? your pictures take so long to download

love the red roofs in hanoi, feels so florentine.......feels like european towns or cities
continue to put up red roofs hanoi

this is the thing hanoian they don't care what's what, they care about beauty...so whatever looks nice they continue to follow the trend........sg on the other hand cares so much about identity.....that they designed all these post modern buildings to represented their "identity" but turns out all those modern buildings with vietnamese identity are found all over the world.
look at 2 big buildings that represent vnmese identity in saigon" the unification palace and the library .......i don't think they represent anything but 2 huge concrete block.....more like xoviet architecture.
hanoi people they loved french architecture......and foreigners loved hanoi
i feel bad for saigon

It's seem look better than the fact!
I'll try to take a lot of picture and clip of Ha Noi when I come back this coming up winter!

Typical "Asian" architecture isn't it. Greek columns, gothik arcs, lamps in the form of greek statues. Poor Europeans. They come to Vietnam to learn about our culture and all they're gonna see is the same crap they have in their own country(maybe with the exception of tube houses which are characteristic to Vietnam only)

no after traveling to so many places in asia, they will feel that vn is cool and european and close to home.
but still......only if they put all those frenchy elements: lamp posts, buildings, water fountain, statues in the french quarter and heighten the classical beauty of the old hanoi and build modern contemporary buildings in new urban areas...rather than old and modern stand side by side everywhere from old quarter to french quarter to new suburbans

How could traditional architecture be implemented into high-rise construction? We cannot built a multi-storey "cai di`nh" duoc. I mean we haven't got a good example yet.

Actually tubehouses are not tumors of modern times, they're originated in the South, where ppl build their houses along the canal, they had to level the terrain first, just in case of annual floods, so the rectangular shape really works. However, I always want to see the day they knock every single one down.

We're living the modern time of the 21st century so we should be building state-of-the-art 21st century architecture. If we want classical architecture, why can't we blend traditional Asian architectural fundamentals with universal modern architectural fundamentals instead of copying some cr@p straight out of Ancient Rome or Paris?

I'm not criticizing what the forumers have posted, please don't have the issue confused. Rather, I'm critical of the direction of which the Vietnamese construction industry is heading towards in general. The designs are very shabby and the European classical architecture fad is just running all the way up my nose, and I'm pretty sure it's up many fellow forumers and other Vietnamese as well.

Don't take the criticizm personally, it's not against you or anybody else but the stupid European colonialist-minded architects.

...but how should a new modern urban area look if it should based on vietnamese architecture?
...I think Hoi An and Oldquarter could be a good inspiration for the architects...it will be nice to see a urban area in Hanoi and Saigon in such style...but investors prefer it more for beach towns...

Such model could come real in 10, 20 years...but now....
If you look at old villages from Bac Ninh to Da Nang to My Tho, they look like sprawl residential areas in the States. Each house goes with 200-300m2 garden with fruit trees and pond. But ppl don't want to live there. Coz there's no hospital, school, supermarket around.
They want tubehouses, or creamy villas with venus statues.

Creamy looking villas rock!!!

ok i would like to see the overall of these streets because i heard and saw vaguely some buildings underconstruction but not sure what they're building:
-trang tien street
-church street? the street leads to the big cathedral
-ngo quyen

yesterday i looked at the satelitte picture of hanoi i saw a new white building right behind the foreign ministry affair building in Badinh square.
that long yellow building facing badinh square used to be a college during the french colonial time...........now they knocked down everything behind and built something new......i think the new building faces hung vuong street...

well if you have time take pictures of all the big government buildings with french architectures.....i'm sure there are a lot of new buildings

i know now......they knocked down the 2 storeys french colonial "Dan Chu" hotel on TRang Tien street. that hotel is quite famous and legendary ......i heard about it in some old hanoi literatures.
hopefully they build something big and frenchy to complete the street.
next to that hotel is a government building extending to Ngo Quyen street......that building also upgrading and expanding......you see any progress?

hanoi is nice.......too bad our film industry is so weak to convey hanoi's image to the world.......see ..after the French movie "Indochine" won the oscar award.....tourism was booming in halong....Indochine showed spectacular views of halong and northern VN.......Korean movies brought the rest of asia to come and visit their country.
vn should make good movies you know......"love movie" hehe incorporate with the natural scenery

mercedes e280 is the highest class that vn can make right now, it's a good thing that the gov is expending on domestic product, it keeps the money flowing inside the country instead of throwing out to other country. e280 in vn may have a smaller engine but maybe some high luxury features. anyway, it's not such a bad thing at all.

oh I see...but I believe that this one is not the NCC actually...it looks like the Ba Dinh Hall Design...gmp has designed for the government 2 buildings (alltogether 3)...

1. National Convention Center (done)
2. Ba Dinh Hall (/Assembly Building?)
3. The Hanoi Museum (construction after NCC)

I've read somewhere about Ba Dinh Hall lately but I don't have understand it...construction has been cancelled because of historical findings they have found there...!?

On the occasion of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Vietnam, the National Conference Center in Hanoi opened the 19th November 2006.
The whole NCC Hanoi complex, designed by gmp-architects, is embedded in a park landscape, which integrates thematic and symbolic references to the Vietnamese culture and traditions. The new buildings for the National Conference Center, the hotel and museum have been positioned in this spacious landscape garden.
In front of the NCC to the south is a multifunctional, urban area, the "Fountain Square". This square is intended for festivities and public occasions.
The square is flanked to the east and the west by a sea of flags and two calm pools of water. A bright palm grove creates the setting for the southern side of the Fountain Square and marks the direction of the main entrance and the access axis to the National Conference Center.
The expressive undulating roof of the whole NCC accompanies the visitors on their way into the foyer. It rises up to an even greater height above the large congress hall, thus creating a distinctive landmark for the NCC Hanoi.
