Lets' replace the rail yards with a car park, that will look much better, what a brilliant idea! :(

yeh pretty stupid idea, they should just cover it with concrete and have a range shops on it or something, anything is better that what is their currently or a car park! :S extend fed sq. all the way down :) prolly cost about $10bil. :)

Nooooooooo

The car park is not going over the railway, but beside it. The car park will cover the view of the railway yards from the parkland in the distance.

I know, but the old rail yards used to cover that land as well, that is what I meant :-)

How long until the screen goes in the big white square. It seems to have been ready for a long time, but still no screen.

Just in case anyone doesn't understand, I believe that inside the white square there is going to be a screen of some kind playing either the company insides logo? or just plain ads?

Actually I believe it was going to be some kind of projected 'hologram' billboard. The building has been completed but we are yet to see any sign of this, a shame.

building isnt yet complete, walked past the other day and there is still quite a bit of work to go, the outside of the structure is complete however.

Yeah I meant externally ;). But I suppose we may not see the sign in use until the building is fully occupied.

i heard from a reasonably reliable source that there have been structural problems with the screen. and from a completely reliable source - the building should be pretty much fully occupied by the end of the month.

yay... just what we need... more billboards... what a joke. it'd be great to walk around without having to look at crap like that, you would think with Melbourne bragging so much about 3 years of being worlds most liveable the government would try to protect it. it's already being said that the title (however irrelevant it may be) may be lost because of increased levels of advertising.

What a complete and utter load of drivel. Explain to me how in the world this advertising would affect our standard of living hmmmm? What the hell does it have to do with Melbourne being the 'worlds most liveable'? I'm sorry but I have never before seen such pure crap in writing.

i get the feeling that the screen has been canned, and we're cursed to view this empty square forever...people are going to constantly ask what the stupid square is for - and look at its location - pride of place in front of the city's edge. sad, sad, sad...pathetic, really - they should FORCE them to redesign the top of the building or remove that hopeless square. Better still, remove the whole building so that we can see the base of 101 Collins again!

jlb, i think the hologram thing can be used for all sorts of things - news, weather, funny faces, etc. not just advertising.

it's a strange view, when you look through the gap in the Collins Place towers from COllins Street, and what do you see? E&Y tower!

Standard of living is not restricted to your home... for example would you find it enjoyable waiting for a tram on a harsh metal seat designed for discomfort while an intensely lighten billboard pumps out bright light from behind an advertisement with bulls**t images attempting to sell bulls**t products printed all over what was once a bearable 'public' space? Without being parochial you cannot claim that advertising does not or has not lowered the quality of public space. It may not in the general sense of selling products, but there are cases where the way advertising has been put out it has been done so poorly. Issues such as lighting, view/ vista obstruction and decreases in public space from installing advertising equipment in my mind are big contributors to poorer living conditions.

Maybe they could attach the world's largest magnifying glass to the frame, and build a toothpick skyscraper over the railyards

Sounds like a plan Mugly, also the escalator to no-where. where the people just fall off (into the Yarra)

^ Piece of artwork called 'No Answer' that can be found down Lush Lane which branches of Flinders Lane. There is a soundtrack of ringing phones that goes with it too.
