Azn_chi_boi June 7th, 2005, 11:46 PM yes I would... the proximity of SF. The cheaper, flater version of SF, with everything you want in SF across a bridge.
VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 02:36 AM AZN, Great Point. :)
Oakland is pretty heavily diverseful cuz there is about 60,851 Asian (mostly chinese). It's not black city though.
Anymodal June 8th, 2005, 02:47 AM impertinent thread i must say...
bay_area June 8th, 2005, 03:10 AM hahahaha...Oakland is cheaper then San Francisco but its not cheap. The average home price for the city of Oakland is around $600,000.......hardly a bargain.
PotatoGuy June 8th, 2005, 03:58 AM if given the choice i'd rather live in SF
ReddAlert June 8th, 2005, 04:17 AM Oakland has a pretty nasty crime rate doesnt it?
Zaqattaq June 8th, 2005, 04:25 AM Oakland has some pretty shit areas I'd take San Jose but so much $$$$
expat_marla June 8th, 2005, 04:44 AM i lived in the oakland hills in the early 90's Panoramic views of The City, especially wonderful when sitting in the hot tub on one of the two back balconies. Its wonderful and gorgeous up there. proximity to The City is excellent. The various neighborhoods of Oakland were cool too.
VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 04:52 AM ReddAlert and Zaq, Oakland isn't bad as unlike in St. Louis, Atlanta, Miami or New Orleans that has higher crime than Oakland. Only about 25% of area was shitty in Oakland and overall nice.
Oakland has few ghetto area as well.
Zaqattaq June 8th, 2005, 04:58 AM Oh I know, up in the hills some extremly expensive real estate
expat_marla June 8th, 2005, 05:01 AM i would not look to be settling in the oakland flats though
VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 05:09 AM Oakland is home of Green Day (Rock band).
Decline of Oakland is occured in around 60's and 70's as growed more crime and gangs but it's got bad in early 90's too. In 90's, black population starting declined and unfair to growing in population. SF has loss of black population too.
Oakland is goes growing more diverseful today.
Zaqattaq June 8th, 2005, 05:19 AM Oakland was hit hard during the crack epidemic
VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 05:21 AM San Jose is pretty little inexpensive than Oakland.
VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 05:24 AM If you are concerned about crime and safety then moving to San Jose instead of Oakland. Only 35 min. to Santa Cruz.
kony June 8th, 2005, 06:15 AM I Live in oakland Lake Merrit and i love it...before i lived 1 year in San Francisco and it's way too expensive there !
in SF a parking garage would cost me 300 $ a month (yes that's what i was paying JUST to park my car in a damn space !!!) whereas in oakland i'm paying 60 bucks to park my car !
people say that some decades ago oakland was "Black" but i don't think it's the case any more...a lot of chinese here have replaced the african-american.
All in all, in Oakland the quality of life is better (acording to me) and the wether is warmer than SF...
and exciting Berkerley is just nearby...but i don't see why comparing oakland and SF, they are not in the same league...actually i don't quite see the use of this thread on an architectural forum...
I don't mean to say that there is nothing interesting to see and visit in oakland (it would be a lie) but Oakland is just one among thousands other medium american cities like Jacksonville or Orlando, Florida .
ok this was my 2 cts
and by the way my building is by this lake (Lake Merrit) and i go running around it 4 times a week :)

VansTripp June 8th, 2005, 06:28 AM Black Population in Oakland:
1990-160,640
2000-140,139
It's almost 21,000 was loss.

No, Oakland is my 3rd favorite city after LA and San Diego.
VansTripp June 9th, 2005, 04:33 AM I'm waiting for 612bv3 to replies because he know about Oakland more.
sean storm June 9th, 2005, 06:10 AM yes I would... the proximity of SF. The cheaper, flater version of SF, with everything you want in SF across a bridge.
um, no. i don't think you know much about oakland.
oakland and SF has some similarities but hardy as you described. oakland does not have everything that SF has.... it doesn't have anywhere near the vibrancy in its downtown, the shopping scene, the skyline, the landmarks, the neighborhood density, etc. plus, oakland has a much higher crime rate per capita.
expat_marla June 9th, 2005, 06:28 AM ^^^ Sean, I interpreted AZN's comments differently. I interpreted him to be saying that you can be in Oakland and just across the bridge you have all you want in SF
kony June 9th, 2005, 06:29 AM with everything you want in SF across a bridge
I guess u misunderstood him...
612bv3 June 9th, 2005, 06:36 AM Oakland isn't as bad as people make it up to be, but it really depends on where you live in Oakland. Lake Meritt, the Hills, especially College Ave. and maybe Jack London Square is a great place to be. Yes, Oakland does have a high crime rate, but those crimes are usually in East and West Oakland. Oakland has gotten some pretty bad publicity in the past, but Oakland isn't all about ghettos and crime.
http://www.alamedainfo.com/Oakland_seen_from_Alameda_Jan_30_2005.jpg
kony June 9th, 2005, 06:53 AM as for me, and so far (thanks God) i am not aware of crime in oakland at all...
you do have homeless here...but less than in San Francisco's market street i would say...
VansTripp June 9th, 2005, 08:12 AM 612bv3, Thank u for replied my thread about Oakland. :D
Richmond, CA is pretty bad, more ghetto and higher crime rate than Oakland.
VansTripp June 9th, 2005, 08:20 AM but.... I thought crime in Richmond, CA is pretty dropped today as murders goes down to 16.0 to 18.0.
If Richmond is practicing to rid the crimes then it will off from list on Most Dangerous Cities. Oakland is almost to off from list too.
bay_area June 9th, 2005, 03:41 PM Oakland is more racially diverse then San Francisco and in some ways-more liberal. Its politics are left of left and its people are among the most educated in the entire nation. There are more Nobel Prize Laureates living in Oakland proper then in any other city in California(Cause the Oakland Hills are practically adjacent to UC Berkeley) and 94619 has the higher number of PhDs then any zip code in San Francisco.
The weather is near perfect, there is world class dining to found within the city limits of Oakland, there are very upscale neighborhoods, there are very distinct, walkable retail districts including the nation's 4th largest chinatown.
And as far as Downtowns go, Oakland's downtown is more vibrant then most of the nation's 50 largest cities. It's not like Phoenix and the like are any better.
kony June 9th, 2005, 04:28 PM the nation's 4th largest chinatown
where is it located ? the only chinatown i know here is the one that begins at 8th street and broadway ??? i would certainly not say it's the 4th largest in the USA
And as far as Downtowns go, Oakland's downtown is more vibrant then most of the nation's 50 largest cities
well probably during weekdays and office hours but when i go there on week-ends i don't see much people (yeah i know San Francisco's Downtown is pretty dead on week-end too)
Downtown Oakland is around Broadway street where is the city hall right ???
after 1 year of living here (i work in San Francisco) I still have to understand how Oakland works ;)
Azn_chi_boi June 9th, 2005, 08:57 PM I meant SF is just across the bridge... from oakland, where everything is...(i guess I didnt proofread what I typed, sorry)
612bv3 June 10th, 2005, 12:46 AM where is it located ? the only chinatown i know here is the one that begins at 8th street and broadway ??? i would certainly not say it's the 4th largest in the USA
There's actually a new chinatown in Oakland and it's called New Chinatown. :)
612bv3 June 10th, 2005, 12:47 AM 612bv3, Thank u for replied my thread about Oakland. :D
You're Welcome. :)
VansTripp June 10th, 2005, 01:07 AM You're Welcome. :)
I want visiting in bay area this summer.
kony June 10th, 2005, 03:23 AM There's actually a new chinatown in Oakland and it's called New Chinatown. :)
and where is it ?
Azn_chi_boi June 10th, 2005, 03:27 AM Oakland have the 4th largest?
IS SF first, then NYC(the one near canal), LA, then oakland?
One thing is for sure, Chicago does not have top 4 largest chinatown
612bv3 June 10th, 2005, 05:45 AM and where is it ?
It's around E 12th street and International just south of Lake Meritt.
kony June 10th, 2005, 05:59 AM oh yeah i see between the lake and the lake merrit station and around the Oakland Post Office...well that's not really a "chinatown" (with many shops etc...) that's a few blocks where asian people live...that's a bit different.
Azn_chi_boi June 10th, 2005, 12:45 PM The first thing I hear about Oakland's chinatown is 9th street, and its flat.
612bv3 June 11th, 2005, 03:35 AM http://www.chabotspace.org/aboutus/press/gallery/images/Chabot_air300.jpg
kony June 11th, 2005, 04:50 AM very nice pix ! What is thi blue dome in the bottom left ? a space observatory ?
612bv3 June 11th, 2005, 04:43 PM It's the Chabot Space & Science Center
kony June 11th, 2005, 08:37 PM ok thanx,i got to go there one day...
PanaManiac June 12th, 2005, 07:54 AM The best thing about living in Oakland is that on a clear day, you can enjoy a panoramic view of San Francisco across the bay.
