I don't why Iran is known as a desert country, whereas there are just 3 desert provinces among about 30 provinces in Iran, of course I like those three ones more than others! :)

Iran ...is soo very beautiful !!! I used to be under the impression that Iran is mainly dry & arid land. But I am quite impressed with the beauty. There's lot of greenery.
I think Iran should promote itself as a tourist destination.
Q : Are there wild life sanctuaries / parks in Iran ?

Yeah, I think alot of people think that...
As for wild life sanctuary, there is the Kavir (desert) national park in central Iran:

Nice pics of wild life. I liked the pic of the 'cheetahs' in particular.
India too had a large population of cheetahs ( the fastest running animal on earth ) . But the British hunters killed all of them for pleasure. I guess Iran is now the only country which is home to the Asian Cheetah.
Way to go Iran !!!

Landscape of Iran:
Iran is a mountainous country. Over one half of its area is made up of mountains and heights; some one-fourth of its territories are desert regions and the remaining one fourth is comprised of farmlands.
The other one was the main Silk Road which connected the cities in the northern areas of Iran, such as Kermanshah, Hamedan, Rey, Gorgan, Neyshabour, and Toos to Central Asia (Marv, Samarqand, and Bukhara), China, and Japan.
The Iranian plateau comprises various highlands, over two-thirds of which are above 10000 meters high from the sea level. From a topographical point of view, Iran comprises several ranges. The Koupehdagh, Aladagh, and Binaloud originate from the northeastern parts of the country and extend to eastern Alborz heights in the southern Caspian Sea region. The Alborz Range, which is made up of the three eastern, central, and western sections, covers all the northern areas of the country all the way to the Aras River and the Ararat heights in northwestern Iran. Damavand is the highest volcanic peak of the country with 5671 meters high. Alamkouh is the most important glacier of the country. This peak is 4820 meters high and is located in Central Alborz.
The oss Range extends over all the western and southwestern areas of the country, ranging from the borders with Turkey all the way down to the vicinity of the Strait of Hormoz in the Persian Gulf.
These heights are mainly remnants of the sediments of the Mesozoic and cover almost half of Iran. The Zagross Range has perpetually protected the central government against tribal attacks. Two volcanic peaks, namely Sahand, which is 3710 meters high, and Sabalan, which is 4821 meters high, are located in this region.
The Zagross Range ends to the Makran Mountains (along the shores of the Sea of Oman) in the south. The Makran Mountains extend all the way to the Iran-Pakistan borders. The only lowlands of the country are in the central and eastern regions, comprising the central pits, the area known as Loute and Nahbandan fissures.
The Loute Pit, the area known as Jazmourian, the central salty desert areas, and the sandy Loute areas are located in the lowlands. The most important heights in this region are the Sistan Mountains and the volcanic peak of Taftan which is 4042 meters high.
Plant Life in Iran:
Iran has the most diverse and attractive plant life among all the southwestern Asian countries. The diverse plant life is also due to the diverse climatic conditions.
Although most parts of the country have a semi-arid and dry climate, the southern plains of the Caspian Sea region and the northern slopes of the Alborz Range are filled with forests up to the height of 2500 meters. The same situation also exists in the western parts of the country where the Zagross Range is located.
Forests which are resistant to dry weather extend over the Kurdestan heights all the way down to the southern parts of the Fars province and are also found in the North Khorasan. Generally speaking, the green areas of Iran start from the western parts of the Khorasan provinces and extend towards the province of West Azarbaijan all the way down to the plains of Khuzestan.
Abundant forest resources are found in the Caspian Sea region. The more we move towards the west and the south, the less thick the forests become while the number of thorny plants and small trees increases.
Almost half of the country is covered with steppe. The more dry regions are covered with moors and vegetables while the southern areas and the Persian Gulf coastal area are covered with desert plants. The central part of Iran, also known as the Central Desert region and the Loute Pit, has almost no plant life.
A slight increase in the level of winter and spring precipitation in these areas can affect the regional plant life significantly.

i havent :tongue2: i still find it hectic that iran has cheetas and black panthers, aparently the caspian tiger has gone extinct but there r still sightings in the mazandaran/golestan forrests. i was wondering does/did iran have tigers?
If iran had "open" boarders im sure hollywood would love to make big budget films in iran b/c the variety in terrain. i think that iranian cinema should incorperate irans scenery more instead of just being tragedy were every one dies or comedies. meh its all ours for now

Iran stands 5th for its ecotourism, natural attractions: Official
BANDAR ABBAS, Hormozgan (IRNA) – Director general of the planning and training department of Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (CHTO) Morteza Ahmad said that Iran stands fifth on the world scene for its natural attractions and ecotourism.
He told IRNA on Friday evening that despite enjoying such a privilege, the country does not have a suitable status with respect to attraction of tourists.
"To materialize a 30 percent boost in the number of tourists visiting Iran during the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (2005-10), 30 billion dollars should be invested in the sector.
"Some 10,000 individuals have been trained in the field of hotel management, lodging, travel agency, tour guide, cultural heritage, and traditional arts," he added.
Putting the number of nationwide hotels at 600, he noted that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on training specialized manpower required in hotel management was signed with the Hotel Owners Union in the current year.
"According to the MOU inked by Iran and Japan Association of International Cooperation Agency (JAICA), annually ten CHTO managers and specialists will be dispatched to Japan for training.
"Some 50 individuals have so far participated in tourist promotion courses in Japan since 2001 to this end," he added.
He noted that this mainly aims to make the participants get an idea on the principles of tourism at the international level and provide them with the chance to use the experience of their Japanese counterparts.
Ahmadi said that the training courses in Japan will mainly focus on the services presented by travel agencies, transport, hotel management, leisure time, tourism destination marketing, promotion and training of required manpower and the policies of tourism development.

Thank you all so much.
Feeling I love Iran more than ever. Although similar scenes present elsewhere, but no place like home (watan).
Next time I go to Iran I have to visit these places, I am so ignorant about my country, its nature and history ... the more I learn about Iran the more I love it.
Peace, equal-opportnity and clean nature for all mankind.

Ye that is what most people who see Iran's pics says. It is all because of the bad side they have shown from Iran in the past 30 years.

Unfortunately, as foreigner, I don't know which parts are mostly shown here, since many pics don't have names, would be fine to put a reference. Anyway, I enjoyed all pictures, hope to visit Iran in the future!!

It's really easy. Just use a picture hosting server on the internet to put your pictures online, such as http://www.imageshack.us/ (If you register there first, you can upload pictures under your name). Then you get an URL (webaddress) to that links to the image. Put this URL between and in your post, and you're done.
So:
1. upload picture to server
2. get the link
3. put link in your reply between and
example:
[ img ] http://cd.textfiles.com/carousel/GIFC/TEST.GIF [ /img ]
then you get
http://cd.textfiles.com/carousel/GIFC/TEST.GIF

Hi, Welcome to our website, khosh amadi :)
Yep like ThePersian and Shayan said you have to upload your images from your PC onto www.imageshack.us or www.tinypic.com whichever u like best... I would advise if your pics are that good to sign them with your name because ppl could steal them and sell them to sites like emporis.com like they did with one of Gilgamesh's pics -_-

Chalous Road
After passing the resort areas on the banks of the Karaj river and an artificial lake, created by an impressive hydro-electric dam, the highway winds up along deep and beautiful gorges of the Alborz mountain range then turns into a hairpin road carved in the mountains abrupt slopes before reaching the summits.

http://www.intercaspian.com/photobank/ir/tehran/i030731a.jpg
At the heights of the mountain range on a clear day, Karaj-Chalous highway offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Alborz massif; occasionally pockets of clouds can be seen trapped between mountains reminding us of the olympian scale of the mountain chain.

The shapes of rocks in the high mountains are a geological curiosity. Unusual shapes standing out along the highway form natural columns constructed on steep cliffs, and layers of rocks stacked over each other to create these formidable mountains are typical examples of the most remarkable Jurassic rock formation.

http://www.intercaspian.com/photobank/ir/tehran/i030706a.jpg
Before crossing the thin line bisecting the densely forested northern slopes of the Alborz massif from the southern side covered with Juniper forests, the highway abruptly drops in altitude over a short distance and turns into a hairpin road offering colorful views. Eventually it reaches a river rushing through rocks at the foot of the mountain and follows its course toward Kelardasht and Marzanabad.

So what are the 28 climates and which one is Parsa in?
Marcia
shugs
March 8th, 2007, 12:17 AM
Hmm okay, lets see which ones I can find.. Cos I think Mahdi just heard it from somewhere else...
There are all in all there are twelve classifications around the world which all have sub sections to them... Ones I think are found in Iran are...
-Subtropical climate
-Arid climate
-Semiarid climate
-Continental climate
-Alpine climate
5 out of 12 isn't bad in my book, you have to bare in mind Iran is a huge nation and has been labeled a 'mini continent' in many books... Iran also has such climates to host the Middle East's largest mangrove forest on Qeshm Island.. Not to mention plush sub tropical climates along the coast of the Caspian sea and then varies to snow top mountains all the way down to sand dunes and dense salt lakes (Lake Namak south of Qom) Plenty of examples of such variations on this thread...

^^ i actually heard it from my aunts husband, hes a reasercher in Iran, i emailed him to give me more info about it
:D but im almost positive that it is true
Marcialou
March 8th, 2007, 01:42 AM
There seems to be more than one classification system, each layered with sub classifications and sub-sub classifications. I just googled it and my eyes glazed over before I could figure out any one. It's possible that according to one scheme there are 12 and another 32 climate types. In any case, Iran seems to have a lot of them. It will be interesting to hear what your uncle has to say, Mahdi.

Gilgamesh,
Great pictures. I'm particularly interested in the ones of the ancient Roman ruins in Shushtar. It's because of my interest in ancient plumbing. What is the river - anyone know?
It appears that the Romans had waste water going into the river. The even ancienter Persians also had plumbing to handle waste but I suspect most of it went underground, given the lack of really big rivers.
