muchbetter June 9th, 2005, 05:50 AM From Babystan03's great photoshots, Shanghai looks very modern out of my previous impression.
In september,I will have a chance of short-stay in Shanghai (haha, only three hours) by transfering airplane from local airport to Hongqiao international. Probably, I will take Maglev to feel the speed of over 400 km/h. Excited indeed.
babystan03 June 9th, 2005, 06:23 AM ^
Thanks.....enjoy your stay there....:D

babystan03 June 9th, 2005, 10:12 AM The Maglev is not a popular mode of transportation is it? Why?
Not sure whether it's popular or not......but not very convenient actually (because you have to switch to the metro which can get very crowded in peak hours) compare to taking a cab into the city.......
But it's cheaper than taking a cab (cost about 44 rmb(metro + maglev)from the city compare to 150 rmb(cab) ).....

RafflesCity June 9th, 2005, 11:32 AM I see... you spoke only in putonghua in Shanghai?
It is almost impossible to get anywhere or get things done in Shanghai (staff at hotel do speak English though) or China if you dont speak Mandarin. I was forced to speak Mandarin on a daily basis there...although my accent was a bit strange..I managed to get by :D
I also heard a different dialect which I assume was Shanghainese
RafflesCity June 9th, 2005, 11:33 AM what camera did you use to take those pictures? and RafflesCity too, if you see this. I think they are good quality cameras.

LOL
I had similar incident
I was speaking English to my friend on the streets, and some old ah-peks turned and stared at me like I was from a different planet! I guess they were not used to seeing a Chinese speaking in English. Nevertheless I made an effort to speak in Mandarin where possible..and most of the locals were nice enough to help me when I got stuck

though it sounds wasteful... don't finish the whole plate if the portion is too much for you. I think is more difficult to burn it off later... :P
I need to turn in... am tired... hope you (as well as RC) would have more pics and commentary by tomorrow... it's tiring to check every single thread which you guys posted... good night... zzzzz...

That is my biggest nightmare when travelling in China. I understand Mandarin but I just can't speak out :D So it is a one way thing
Aiyah.......I regret for not telling you guys earlier that I planned to go Shanghai......at least can meetup with Stan or yourself if I we're to be on a free and easy package. The reason why I joined the tour is because of the language barrier :(
Thank goodness I have no problem in HK although I can't read Chinese hehehe :D
Pangu June 9th, 2005, 09:41 PM The Maglev is not a popular mode of transportation is it? Why?
What makes you think it's not popular?
Well, it's only an express line connecting Shanghai's subway system to the airport, I don't know how "popular" it could get :)
In any case, for most people it's actually cheaper to take the maglev than to take the taxi. A taxi ride from Pudong airport to my uncle's office in Pudong costs about 80+ yuan while the maglev train costs 75 yuan the last time I took it plus whatever the cost of taking the subway for two stations. Of course, the maglev is also many many times faster than taxi. :)
raymond_tung88 June 10th, 2005, 03:00 AM I've heard that the Maglev does not carry a lot of people and judging by the photos, I would think that's right. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I also thought the Maglev was expensive... well i guess you proved me wrong.
Anyways... great pics of Shanghai. Truly a world-class city.

actually, you can get by with just basic Mandarin. Like buying tickets, asking for directions, and ordering food..it isnt too difficult.
Also, I noticed many people in Shanghai are tourists from other parts of China, so they do speak Mandarin with different accents, so your 'Malaysian' accent wouldnt be the only odd one out :D

I ordered beef noodle (your favourite). It tasted nice but the beef was chopped up roughly and the noodle portions were enormous
Should have settled for the hot-pot stall instead.
Also, I saw no-smoking signs on every table yet the people at the next table started smoking heh

The problem with Shanghai's maglev is that it stops in the middle of nowhere. I think it should make extensions into downtown Pudong and the Remin Square, which I believe is already planned out.

yes,it's too short
babystan03 June 10th, 2005, 06:39 PM I think maybe the authorities should consider extending the maglev to Pudong (at least) and provide a downtown check-in terminal.......the airport is quite far actually.....
Just my 2 cents......:)

What is Ha bi? Could you write chinese name down here? thank you. I saw fried eggs and too much oil floating in bowl. Oily, too much saturated fat might cause the Worst-case scenerio, cholesterol stuck in blood vessels. Yummy or yucky? I won't eat it.

I don't think so.as I kown,Lunxun was popular in Taiwan during 60s(or 70s),and very famous before he died in 1936,many people attends the funeral, and Hushi(胡适) also said some good, but I should admit I don't like reading his novels.

as usual my problem is they cant catch my mandarin >,,<"
gaoanyu June 20th, 2006, 10:34 AM What makes you think it's not popular?
Well, it's only an express line connecting Shanghai's subway system to the airport, I don't know how "popular" it could get :)
In any case, for most people it's actually cheaper to take the maglev than to take the taxi. A taxi ride from Pudong airport to my uncle's office in Pudong costs about 80+ yuan while the maglev train costs 75 yuan the last time I took it plus whatever the cost of taking the subway for two stations. Of course, the maglev is also many many times faster than taxi. :)
Maglev now costs 50 RMB and 40RMB if you show them your same-day air ticket. I took it this Monday :D. If travelling alone with not too much luggages, I don't see the point of taking a taxi. Maglev+underground is cheaper and faster.

Wow, that's almost half the price! That's definitely good news :)
Poor taxi drivers though.
raymond_tung88 June 21st, 2006, 04:53 PM Aren't they thinking of extending the Maglev to reach Honqiao Airport? Also isn't there supposed to be a subway line going to Pudong Airport?
YelloPerilo June 21st, 2006, 05:38 PM Aren't they thinking of extending the Maglev to reach Honqiao Airport? Also isn't there supposed to be a subway line going to Pudong Airport?
The extension of the Maglev is approved by the governement, but negotiation with the German consortium is not going well. The underground line going to Pudong is under construction and should be finished at the same time as Pudong terminal 2.
AntonAmeneiro June 25th, 2006, 04:04 PM Congrats Babystan! As you usual you managed to capture the best shots of everywhere you go :) I really loved this collection... it's nice how besides showing the skyscrapers of the city you also portrayed the traditional areas of the city, really, great job man.
