I hope they have a long career. rise_against June 12th, 2005, 04:11 AM Ya The Arcade Fire is amazing, there really tearing it up in Europe. I love em!!! Buster June 12th, 2005, 03:51 PM Love most of the bands/artists mentioned here but saw no mention of the Dears or K-OS. Sarah Harmer writes some wicked tunes. I used to love Sloan but their more recent stuff sounds pretty tired, worn, and derivative. They haven't put out a good album in years. CrazyCanuck June 12th, 2005, 07:10 PM Whose hot right now? Hot Hot Heat The Arcadae Fire Billy Talent Sum 41( from my hometown) Death From Above 1979 SImple Plan is simpky a boy band with a guitar, I despise them. rise_against June 12th, 2005, 08:43 PM Im not a big fan of Simple Plan ethier but that same has been said about Sum 41 (who i do like) simadon June 12th, 2005, 09:20 PM K-os Sloan Sam Roberts Poulin June 12th, 2005, 10:34 PM Arcade Fire The Dears The (late) Unicorns were pretty groovy Malajube renthefinn June 13th, 2005, 03:01 AM Hot Hot Heat is alright, I know the drummer Arcade Fire is good I like some Billy Talent stuff I despise Simple Plan, and most sum41, though they have recentley improved I just wish the Dayglo Abortions would make a new album, then I could add them to the list. 40748246 June 22nd, 2005, 07:04 PM Rush, Loverboy, Triumph, Quarterflash just to name a few. circle33 June 23rd, 2005, 12:32 AM The last three haven't made anything in 20 years. rise_against June 23rd, 2005, 04:47 AM I love K-os but did anyone here him on the MMVA's? I thought he sounded awful, he really dissapointed me. KGB June 23rd, 2005, 05:10 AM I'm too busy catching up on all the Funk from the 70's, that I wasn't interested in at the time, to devote much time to the "new" stuff these days. Most of it is highly derivative of earlier sounds, which were quite frankly, a lot better anyway. If any of the bands trying to sound like Thin Lizzy even came close, then I might care. There are some good bands out there though...even some fresh stuff. Speaking of the MMVA's, I'll give them a tiny bit of credit for doing a fairly indie show. It's a shame they had to blow an almost brillant show with something as embarrassing as Ashley Simpson. They should stick to showcasing some pretty good indie talent, rather than second rate import talent. But for an awards show, it sucked less than anything else. KGB marathon June 23rd, 2005, 05:17 AM I'm too busy catching up on all the Funk from the 70's, that I wasn't interested in at the time, Good man! doady June 23rd, 2005, 05:40 AM Metric Arcade Fire Sloan Broken Social Scene Stills Most of these bands are indie and it is too bad there no good mainstream Canadian bands anymore like in the 90's. Even Our Lady Peace sucks now. KGB June 23rd, 2005, 07:31 AM " Good man! " Well shit....I spent the 70's in Oxford County...wasting my time smoking pot (which i didn't even like), and listening to Zappa, Max Webster....and Styx!! Nobody listened to Funk, and if asked, Funk would be Rick James, or the soundtracks to Baretta or the Mod Squad (which was actually pretty good). Roy Ayers...Parliament...Sunra...never heard of them. Some really cool Funk came from Bollywood. I didn't really get interesyed until I started listening to Jamiroquai, thinking hey...this is a great new sound.....NOT!! LOL They're ok, but more or less just a pale rip-off of the real deal. "it is too bad there no good mainstream Canadian bands anymore like in the 90's." There's not much of interest to me in 90's Canadian bands at all....the late 90's was all about European electronica. KGB Kawir June 23rd, 2005, 07:37 AM Sunra? Do you mean Sun Ra? If so he is a jazz composer. Kawir June 23rd, 2005, 07:39 AM Also, why is it that the Arcade Fire are so popular? They aren't great. KGB June 23rd, 2005, 09:34 AM "Sunra? Do you mean Sun Ra? If so he is a jazz composer." Yea...I know who he was. 70's Funk...Disco...avant guarde jazz...all kind of influenced each other at the time. Just enjoying chill'n with old "new" tunes....it's all good. KGB marathon June 23rd, 2005, 04:38 PM " Good man! " Well shit....I spent the 70's in Oxford County...wasting my time smoking pot (which i didn't even like), and listening to Zappa, Max Webster....and Styx!! Well, Oxford County does have a Woodstock ;) I spent the 70s in southern Cook County. It sounds like you're my age or perhaps slightly older. Anyways, I listened to a lot of 70s funk and R&B at the time, but also Styx and much of that genre too. I was actually big into country rock (Eagles, Little River Band, etc.), which was mostly what my garage band performed. It's all good. Like you said, if you missed it the first time around, it's all new to you. I listen to 70s CDs I burned still more than anything else. I'm listening to Rufus right now... Jaybird June 24th, 2005, 12:35 AM Billy Talent, Sum 41, The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Finger Eleven, my pics for the best Canadian bands, although I'm not sure if they have had CDs in the last two years, but they're all Canadian, at least. Buster June 24th, 2005, 01:04 AM Also, why is it that the Arcade Fire are so popular? They aren't great. Good new bands have a tendency to reference the past, but look to the future. The Arcade Fire's very unique among all other bands out there, namely their ability to juxtapose completely different sounds to create a coherent whole. I love the chaotic and menacing wall of sound creted by the guitars and drums juxtaposed with a glockenspiel and violin. It's been done before but they do it differently and do it very well. I haven't seen them live, but I hear it's a riot. Can't wait for the hillside festival in Guelph. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're sick of listening to bands that keep on rehashing sunny punk-pop riffs, or pseudo R&B princesses whining about a man who can't keep his pants on, the Arcade Fire hits the spot. I love the chaotic and menacing wall of sound creted by the guitars and drums juxtaposed with a glockenspiel and violin. It's been done before but they do it differently and do it very well. MANY other bands have used violins and other bands have used glockenspiel and violin better, namely Godspeed You! Black Emperor and probably some Elephant 6 bands. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're sick of listening to bands that keep on rehashing sunny punk-pop riffs, or pseudo R&B princesses whining about a man who can't keep his pants on, the Arcade Fire hits the spot. Well if you get you music from watching Much. algonquin June 24th, 2005, 02:10 AM the Arcade Fire by a mile... in fact, they released ther best Canadian album in the last 10-12 years, let alone two. Can't say enough about that album. Other than them, K-OS for sure (not a band, of course). Another phenomenal album. The Tragically Hip just keep getting better. Some people might dismiss them nowadays, but they keep improving and developing their music. Again, can't say enough about the Arcade Fire. I advise everyone here to buy the album, and sell it after a week if you don't like it. It gives me fucking goosebumps. Funeral is dark, operatic, sexy, fun, and chaotic all at the same time. The production is neither slick nor rough, but has the quality of being a live album. The songs are good in a sense that they could be played several different ways. They will be a cult favourite for sure... they're way to fucking good to get what they deserve on mainstream radio. I can't say if they'll last, but Funeral is unforgetable. Buster June 24th, 2005, 03:09 AM MANY other bands have used violins and other bands have used glockenspiel and violin better, namely Godspeed You! Black Emperor and probably some Elephant 6 bands. You bet the strings/glockenspiel combo's been used many times over (my band included)! But that's besides the point. It's all about the mix, the sum of the parts. Confused Philosopher June 24th, 2005, 03:28 AM Whose hot right now? Hot Hot Heat The Arcadae Fire Billy Talent Sum 41( from my hometown) Death From Above 1979 SImple Plan is simpky a boy band with a guitar, I despise them. Same goes for Sum41. Kawir June 24th, 2005, 04:20 AM You bet the strings/glockenspiel combo's been used many times over (my band included)! But that's besides the point. It's all about the mix, the sum of the parts. Which aren't that great. The Arcade Fire I think resemble ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. They released an indie rock album that is average yet everyone orgasms over it then later realize it isn't special. rise_against June 24th, 2005, 04:50 AM Can you truthfully tell me that you have truthfully listened to the whole album of the arcade fire, Kawir? I can respect your descion if you have seen them live or if you have listened to their whole album. I have done both. I must admit when i first heard them i wasnt sold, but then i saw them at the MMVA's. They are a true talent, they sound just as good in person. You can't say that for many bands. I like that they dont try to sell an image. There just average kids that try to get you to listen to their music, which IMO is very different from whats been pumped out there lately. TreeBeard June 24th, 2005, 05:32 AM How can this thread go on this long and no one mention the greatest Canadian band EVER! GREAT BIG SEA - Is the best band ever. EVER! Also the Tragically Hip are up there for sure. GREAT BIG SEA no one will ever be better than the GREAT BIG SEA. KGB June 24th, 2005, 06:23 AM It appears that the biggest fans of Arcade Fire...are other bands. I had that CD downloaded before it came out, played it a few times. Nothing special. Gave it another chance later. Mediocore at best. Nowhere near album of the year material (2004 that is). Funeral doesn't have shit on Sung Tongs, As The Roots Undo, Talkie Walkie, We All Shall Be Healed or hell even stuff like The Futureheads or Goods News..., All amazing albums from last year. Kawir June 24th, 2005, 06:45 AM @ KGB You should check out (if you already haven't) Kiss Me Again And Again by Polmo Polpo. Really cool chill music. algonquin June 24th, 2005, 01:29 PM mediocre at best?!? BTW who are We All Shall Be Healed? doady June 24th, 2005, 08:02 PM I had that CD downloaded before it came out Oh, that explains it SpatulaCity June 24th, 2005, 09:16 PM You should check out (if you already haven't) Kiss Me Again And Again by Polmo Polpo. Really cool chill music. I recently downloaded Requiem For A Fox... it's amazing. not that I claim to be submersed in the more underground scene but there is sooo much more going on than The Arcade Fire it's ridiculous. Anyway, as a rock/pop act they are very talented and have a refreshing sound that I enjoy very much. It appears that the biggest fans of Arcade Fire...are other bands. ...other pop/rock bands. Coldplay, for example, love their sound. Pop/rock bands that rely on formulas for songwriting are probably inspired by the unpredictable and quirky side of the Arcade Fire because it's still safe enough for radio ($$$). Kawir June 25th, 2005, 10:15 PM All right thats cool if you dont like them, i just hate it when people diss up music that they never heard. You understand right? BTW who are We All Shall Be Healed? It's a CD by The Mountain Goats. Oh, that explains it ? If you are an idiot and assume I don't enjoy because it get radioplay, Modest Mouse are one of my favourite bands ever and they get more airtime than The Arcade Fire. I recently downloaded Requiem For A Fox... it's amazing. It is. marathon June 28th, 2005, 04:31 AM I recently downloaded Requiem For A Fox... it's amazing.
