Wow, those are superb. Im going to be in Chicago in August and Im gonna take my father's Canon EOS 300D out for a test drive. He bought a telephoto lens too...its gonna be fun. I wanna see how much better the quality will be from my Sony DSC P200.

^Great! I can't wait to see your photos from that visit. Please make sure to post them in the Chicago forum--we love seeing photo threads from out-of-town visitors. Have a good time. :)

Well, Im not really out of town. I feel like Chicago is my home away from home (home being Seoul, but it used to be Toronto). Im well acquainted with the city, hell, being Polish its like a home away from homeland (Poland) heheh. Plus, Ive already started formulating some compositional plans for shots in Chicago. Ive got some photos already snapped..in my head. Now its just a formality of getting the camera and pressing the shutter.

So you visit a lot, huh? It's a good thing you aren't here now because we're in the midst of an oppressive heat wave. It's 33C and terribly humid day after day. At first I liked it, but without any A/C and living on the third floor, it's beginning to wear on me.

Anyway, that's a good idea to plan out your shots in advance. Do you plan on mostly photographing the Loop and its vicinity or also some neighborhoods?

What I do is I start with some plans for compositions. Im going on a hunt tomorrow to downtown Seoul and Ive got some shots planned, atleast general outlines of them. Ill see what the conditions are tomorrow, regarding traffic, people, whatever other factors. You cant predict that perfectly. Id say that on any photo expedition day when I go out, I have about 10 shots that I know Ill be trying, if its a place I know well. The rest are just "inspirations" I get at the moment I see something I like. I have one shot in Seoul I REALLY want to take. Its gonna be appropriate for the UPC. Its a hill that is so densely built up with villas that it looks like some ant hill. I noticed it on a car ride and I am itching to go and snap it ASAP. Even in Seoul Ive never seen a shot that urban before.

The good thing about the camera I use though is that its small. basicaly, I never part with it. That way, I can snap a photo at a moment's notice. DSLRs offer technical advantage for sure, I itching to see how many. Although, if you look at the photos Ive been taking recently in Korea, most are very graphical, and my camera is great for that. When it comes to DOF issues though, geting a nice gradual change in focus from close to far and getting that depth, it falls short. But again, for photos Ive ben taking, thats not so much an issue, as I love photographing small details as opposed to the large whole.

In Chicago, Im thinking of the loop (buildongs but also the trains, tracks, the electical wires, etc), the neighborhoods outside the loop and some of the run down urbanity there. Its been over 4 years since Ive stepped foot in North America though, Im gonna see how I perceive it today compared to 4 years ago.

P.S. getting back to the camera issue, here is a thread about Magnum photographer Alex Majoli using small cameras in his awesome work in place of DSLRs. (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-6468-7844) It was a great read for me anyway.

I'm excited to see that shot you've been wanting to take. I'm not a photographer myself, but I'm constantly walking around and thinking "that would be a great shot," wishing I had a camera with me. I know what it feels like to really want to take a shot. When I finally have enough money to buy a decent camera, it's on. I've been into photography for years but never got around to buying a camera, mostly because I'm a broke student.

About your photos being "graphical," what exactly do you mean by that? Is the highway underpass photo entry in this week's UPC an example of this?

noli
June 10th, 2005, 08:41 AM
What I mean is if you look at my photos I would say that they are stong in colors, although not all, as my overpass photo shows. But most are very stong in terms of lines and repeating patterns, which I like to take. My overpass photo had very simple lines and not much detail as youd find in other shots, it was very minimalistic. Thats kind of what I mean by graphical. My next UPC entry will kind of continue with this idea of color and line simplicity. Im already aiting for next week's contest to start so I can see what people think about it.

The shot I want to take will probably involve me trying to walk acros a bridge that Im not sure is open to pedestrians hehehe.

^Oh, I know what you're saying. I really like those types of photos--repetitive and/or abstract.

Obviously it gives the photographers on here more creative space to go outside strictly urban subject matter, and I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with.

Or to exhibit their more favored themes:) To be truthful, urban photography is something I only really started so that I could enter the UPC. Otherwise at the beginning, I had no photos to enter and didnt really have much success.."not urban" was one of the most comon comments I was getting heheh

As for whether the un-urban UPC will get popular, I'd suggest that the administrators create a link directly to it on the front page under "General Photography." That might help.
