JERUSALEM – A gay rights group petitioned the High Court of Justice Thursday over what it says constitutes discriminatory conduct against homosexuals and Lesbians on the part of Mayor Uri Lupolianski.



The Jerusalem Open House, which represents the gay community in the capital, called on the court to order city hall to end its discrimination and fund the Gay Pride Parade scheduled to take place in Jerusalem at the end of June.

Last year, local officials refused to meet Open House demands and held the gay parade under the banner of “World Sports Day.” The group is worried the city would resort to the same tactic this year and therefore filed the petition with the court.



In the petition, the group notes it already postponed world gay pride events scheduled for August as a result of the upcoming disengagement. However, the group says it decided to hold the annual local parade in June, as usual.



‘Fed up with mayor’s pathetic efforts'



Group representative Saar Netanel told the judges that the Jerusalem city hall has completely ignored all requests by the Open House regarding the parade. Moreover, during a meeting last week, Jerusalem City Hall Director-General Eitan Meir admitted he is “following the orders of Lupolianski, who doesn’t want to hold the parade in Jerusalem,” Netanel charged.



“We’re fed up with Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski’s pathetic efforts to prevent the pride parade from being held in Jerusalem,” Netanel said. “As the mayor is not serving as everyone’s mayor, and in this case isn’t respecting the law, we have no choice but to petition the Supreme Court."




Other activists in the Open House said that in any case they intend to hold the parade at the end of the month.



“Jerusalem doesn’t belong only to the mayor and those like him,” one activist said.

I definetely support gay rights and all that, but seeing how many people show up to the pride parade over in Tel Aviv seems to solve the mystery of the low Israeli birthrate. There's the demographic problem in a nutshell.

Tiesto, Israel is a secular nation and it grants freedom of religion to everyone, not just the Jews. Gays have a rights in Israel, and probably more than what they may have in the US. There is nothing wrong with gays in Israel, and I doubt that it gives this country a bad name. Besides, the EU and the US have Gay Pride marches as well. It would be nice if there were more cities in Israel besides Tel Aviv and Eilat to have a Gay Pride Parade, especially in Haifa, my native city. The Love Parade was created by gays in 1989. Then in 1995 it became the biggest Party in the world with all kind of people.

i am for the parades, but against kids in them. and i dont like it when they are in jerusalem - they have tel-aviv for it..


Be free, but be free somewhere else, right? There's some hypocrisy in that, I think... Concerning the issue of kids in that kind of parades... well, I don't think kids should be in any kind of party, however gay parades are often divided in what is the parade itself (with families, politicians, celebrities...) and what is the party afterwards.
I don't see anything bad with kids being in a parade that supports the right of people to express their emotions freely. If those kids are ever going to face the coming out of friends or relatives, or even their own coming out, it's good to save them some trauma by letting them know it's ok if they're gay cos there's nothing wrong with it. (If some ignorant dares to say it would push kids to be gay, that couldn't be more silly... after all, if it worked that way nobody would be gay, because we're all initially conditioned to be straight.)
When the sexual content is more explicit, I agree kids should be out of it, because it's something kids do not understand and do not need to, at their age.

About the Greek guy who spoke about gay parades as "straight discriminating"... that's just silly, because straight people also rally in gay parades... (besides, it's homosexuality that is against law in dozens of countries around the world, not heterosexuality... and it's gay people who are harassed cos of their sexuality, not heterosexual ones...) it's also not to prove, express or define any "gay identity", and of course to be gay does not mean to walk the streets in underwear waving rainbow flags...

It's just a party to celebrate that in some countries (like Israel) people are free enough to party and celebrate in their streets, without having to hide their sexuality. You may like that kind of parades more or less, but it's positive for a country that its citizens are free to express their feelings in the way they want, as long as it's peaceful and it does not intend to hurt anyone.

Homosexuality is not something you can agree or disagree with. I mean, it is something natural and undeniable. Scientists and psychologists have proved so, and I don't think there's any debate on that (at least in circles where there's a minimum of scientific knowledge). Well, it's like the evolution of the species, some people will still say what Darwin said was crazy and that G-d created each of the species in an independent way... but it's also not discussable, so those who deny it are indeed ignorants, same thing.
I remember once a friend of mine told me about his coming out... his father took him to the psychologist to see "what was wrong with him", and the psychologist said that it was the father who needed help, cos he needed to start accepting his son the way he was.

About why is it bad to not accept homosexuality... well, as I said, that you accept homosexuality or not will not change the fact that it is a natural circunstance. The thing is, that you accept it or not will change a lot the lives of those who are homosexuals. For example, if a friend, a relative or just a workmate of yours is gay, and you don't accept it, it will only depress him, make him feel unloved, separate, low... you'll be making that person unhappy and you'll be making his life harder than it should be, for no reason.
We always want our parents to feel proud of us... can you even imagine what it must feel to feel rejected by your own parents, the two people in the world you love most? I just can't imagine how much that must hurt.

So not accepting homosexuality means rejecting people for the way the are, which at all levels is bad and selfish. Selfish because we must accept people the way they are, not try to make them our way.
