Glass would be terrible! Hamburg doesn't need boring, cheap buildings/skyscrapers made of glass.

Nice, but would be nice to have some highrises in the Hafencity. Looks too flat IMO.

I love the HafenCity the way it is presently built.

No need for supertalls etc. But a 100-140m apartment tower would be sold out within a few months. Just look the at the "oval" tower. It was sold out before construction has even started.

Hafencity is too dense planned.There is in the central-Hafencity nearly no place for + 100m towers without coming into conflict with other developers who build mid / low-rise. But there are several buildings u/c or proposed which are taller than the average 8-floor buldings : Elbphilharmonie (110 m ), science-center 73m,
two ca 60 m residential towers at Überseeequartier , the two Waterfront-towers ca 50m , condo-tower at unilever HQ ( 55m), several other 55m condo towers in the same area in a few years.

What kind of conflicts are you talking about? Highrises are especially good n dense urban areas.

So whats the problem? Not every central development has to be a high rise development.

I actually like the concept of the Hafencity, some scattered mid or high rises are ok, but they are no necessity. Real skyscrapers in fact would look rather misplaced there IMHO.

Many good professional photographers indeed, but unfortunately they are very rare here on SSC :lol: No issue for me if I'm in Hamburg, I can be within 15 minutes there, but I miss good pictures when away from home.

Nice photos again; good subjects, good perspectives, good angles and good proportions. I like the last building, and other, which I dislike, you are not showing here. My taste :)

Very nice, I believe that this is one of the best city development areas I have seen in Europe! I like almost all the buildings! Some buildings have really outstanding designs! I especially like the old brick houses combined with new architecture!

Hamburg need some skyscrapers at the location. The lack of high buildings is surprising for a city the size of Hamburg. Any way Hamburg is the nicest city in Germany only second to Berlin. Keep up posting pictures guys, I am going to visit Hamburg this fall.:):)

Yes, would be very nice to have more highrise development in the haqfencity area. Looks too flat IMO. I am not talking about 200+ towers but just some 100m residentials and 120-130m office towers.

The vertical developments are reduced to Chicago Square with up to 350m. But only in a distant future. And I don't think there should be any skyscrapers in Hamburg. The "flat" appearance is what I most like in Hamburg. Skyscrapers can be built in Frankfurt where they are suitable or in Berlin which is too ugly to spoil anything. But look at Cologne. How ugly the tall buildings stand in the town a ruin the view!

If they are commercial okay. But most people here do not like residential highrises. In some cities they are getting demolished because no one wants to live inside them.

Surely there is need for office space! Hamburg has a lot of offices but mostly in mid-to low-rise. Why do they have to put everything upwards?
The reason there is no investor for Chicago Square is simple: It will be Hafencity's last part to be built. That should be finished only in 2025. So it would be somewhat strange to sell the space already tody! :lol:

But too close to the city centre! If you are in the centre, a 350m-tower would be visible. But yes, 80 or 90-m-towers would not be too overtowering the inner city. Are you kidding? It's right next to the Speicherstadt, one of the best preserved historical districts of Hamburg. And it's just a stone's throw from the historical core.

And as the Brausepöter said, some 100m-gherkins would look ridiculous and bigger towers would destroy the cityscape at this place. I think the Elbphilharmonie must be the peak of this quarter. Additional towers around 100m would take away its dominance and therefore destroy the whole concept imo.

There are many spots where you could build some nice solitaires. You don't have to build it right on top of the Speicherstadt. But I don't think we will ever agree on this issue.

Well, I agree that Hamburg actually could cope with highrises. But they've gotta be somewhat clustered and iconic. Pretty much the only place where this would be possible is Chicago Square. You know, skyscrapers can be an exciting add to an old existing cityscape, but they have to be placed at the right spots. Especially in ze Hansestadt.

The Chicago Square plan looks awesome and admittedly swells up the old civic pride a bit. Hopefully my city can lay a befitting tribute to Hamburg in return some day.

There isn't much demand for highrise luxury apartments in Germany. They are trying to test some bigger versions of apartment buildings. But you will never see a 30storey building rising. BTW: If it was only height regulations by the authorities then please tell me WHY does Frankfurt city hall approve the 200m and taller skyscrapers. And why do you see the highrises being built in Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Chicago Square development (having options to exceed 350m) got approved? The reason is that they are commercial and have the chance to be sold out. The attempt by German developers do not include highrise residentials. Anbd I don't know what should be negative about it. I personally do not want a bunch of 60 to 100m midrises spoiling the cityscapes like they do in many regions of the world.
And you are pretty wrong in saying that Dutch and Germany are culturally soooo close. Dutch people are surely more open to highrise living than most Germans. And honestly: I prefer the view from my house on an elevated point of the city rather than deviding my space with 500 neighbours in just one building!

Well the point is I think that this Hafencity should become part of the city center. So outside of the city center should mean outside of the Hafencity as well. After all, city center and old town don't have to be identical, it would be stupid to suggest that city centers are not allowed to grow anymore.

I'm not a big fan of the Cinnamon tower.

Hopefully the neighborhood is gonna be as nice and lively as it is in the renderings. I'm gonna do my bit and visit the city at least once.

Elbphilharmonie from eastern side ... You can see the first three windows being installed, more than 2,000 to follow. They are bent in the middle ... On this side the Building has reached around 65 to 70 Meters, will become 85. On the west side they are at about 70 to 80 meters, roof will be 110 meters height. The east side will contain a 5* Hotel, on the west there will be appartements. In the middle there will be the two concert halls ... Here there is a schematic Picture of the building, unfortunately in german only ...

This is a link to a collection of HD marketing videos about the city of Hamburg, parts of the Hafencity, inner city, the new Hamburg Philharmonic Hall, the river & harbour area, architecture, and more in clips of 2-10 mins.
Some older stuff is mixed under as well as a 2010 clip about the future development of the eastern part of Hafencity (Only in german). The Elbphilharmonie can be seen in several clips.

37 vids total, several of them interviews..

The videos have mostly been shot in 2009 and some are older, so they are not up to date considering the Hafencity area or the concert hall, but they integrate renderings of the new Hafencity buildings in the vids.

Best thing is: Hamburg looks just beautiful in Summer

yes, thats quite some time, but they have to find different investors for each one of these properties, and the whole area is huge.
latest numbers i have heard of are 15.000 inhabitants and 55.000 workplaces plus huge areas with promenades, parks, places, for which the city has to pay, and those are not of the cheaper standard style.
i guess its better to plan that step by step.
another factor is that on quite a number of those properties existing buildings are still in use (with contracts running out in a few years)

if you are interested in checking out the area you shoud use the federal german site (http://www.geodatenzentrum.de/dienste/dop_viewer_geoview.htm) of something similar to google maps (which shows better picture material of that area than the american original - if you zoom in closely). google maps pics are from 2006, the "Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie" viewer has 2009 material. its a little oldschool in handling, you have to get used to it

Hamburg can be really happy to have such a quality project on such a scale. Especially when you compare it to the boring new city quarters they construct in other German cities. Of course the water and port make it easier to have an interesting city quarter but IMO the architecture is also more innovative. Would like to see more highrises though.

^^ Agree. The project is certainly a high quality project but a few classy highrises would give the area that little extra so it really stands out.

The central ( ÜQ) quarter u/c will host also a lot of homes for the wealthy ones . They are the clients of the investors . Nobody of them will " get shadowed " from skyscrapers in their new hood , at least that's what the investors thought .Those "clients" are able to look skyscrapers in Paris , NYC , Rio or Singapur just at the same day (not all together) , because they can afford it !!!

Nobody of them will " get shadowed " from skyscrapers in their new hood , at least that's what the investors thought .Those "clients" are able to look skyscrapers in Paris , NYC , Rio or Singapur just at the same day (not all together) , because they can afford it !!!

ther are no skyscrapers in rio, only a few highrises. :)

I think the Spiegel HQ will be finished soon from the outside . It is a good addition to the cool Deichtor-center just opposite and outside Hafencity area .

It is absolutely freezing right now (-11°C/12°F, which is pretty chilly for Hamburg) and today, I thought it would be a good idea to go outside and capture a few winter impressions from Hamburg's Hafencity. Undaunted by death (:laugh:), I made my way to the Hafencity.

Shops, bicycles and cars fill up the Hafencity. All in all, I would say there's a huge interest in the new quarter, particularly on weekends and in the summer months, when thousands of people stroll around, dine, drink and relax. Quite a lot of new shops, eateries and bars opened in the past year.
