don't know. i just went out, and the smoke seems to be thining out but i can make up flames from behind the trees (who actually block most of the view) - i wonder what that is. but i'd say it's a kilometer away from me and that was fucking loud.
oh well, nothing to bad i guess, it just scared the shit outta me that the window shook!

Sounds it could be gas. If you have an explosion in the gas tank the vibrations will travel down the pipes. Go and try the gas if it doesnt work. Bingo.

I've just logged on here to see if anyone new what this was. I was coming home on the train from work & saw a huge black cloud of smoke coming from the direction of the royal docks. When I got back to Dartford I could still see it from here!

No mention of it on any news sites though.

It's a fire in Bromely-by-bow iwhich has closed the blackwall tunnel and A road. It was on the BBC London news but they didn't say what caused it, although they had pretty impressive pictures of the smoke.

Fire crews fight scrap yard blaze

Smoke can be seen for miles around
A fire at a scrap yard in east London is sending clouds of black smoke across the area and causing traffic chaos.
Tyres and cars are thought to be alight and gas cylinders have exploded at the yard, just off the A12, where the fire started at about 1700 BST.

The A12 and the northbound lane of the Blackwall Tunnel have been closed and may remain so for 24 hours. The smoke can be seen across London.

Drivers are advised to avoid Bow High Street and Stratford High Street.

Firefighters have set up an exclusion zone because of the danger that more cylinders might explode.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said some people had been evacuated from the scrap yard.

No-one is thought to be seriously injured.

I just went up there on my bike, loads of engines, can't get near the place, you can still feel the heat though. More cylinders are exploding all the time

well i just logued back on as we've not had any power for the last two hours and it just came back!
I bet that also went widely unreported at least till now, my neighbors were saying there was a power outage in a huge area, not only locally in bow. oh well, i guess it's over now!

there was a huge bang in worsley, salford a few months back, nobody knew what it was because there was nothing to show for it. no smoke, no fire. so we all assumed it was coal shafts caving in etc.

Thats quite a bit of smoke, did you find out what caused it?

Ignre this I just read the rest of the posts.

Did anyone else experience that massive power cut in central london a couple of weeks ago...that was quite freaky, all of the centre went down for 15 minutes. We had to rescue a couple of people from the lifts in our building which was pretty amusing.

Nice view overlooking the HAC you have there Potto.

I nearly got caught in the traffic for this. I'd just dropped of in Greenwich and what I normally do then is shoot through the pipe and into Canary Wharf to look for my next job. Luckily the police had just shut the slip road so I went back through Greenwich and struck lucky with a job to Covent Garden. Luverlee..... :)
